The marriages that occurred at St. George's Church (Episcopal) in Schenectady, NY 1771-1850 are now online, alphabetized by Groom. It will load onto your computer slowly, but it isn't too bad. I am still working to find a method to reduce its size by getting it out of the table format into columns as I have done with almost all of the other records posted on my site. Tables look great, but triple or quadruple the size of the file, and also make it difficult to copy a record from a website to your computer and have it look right when it gets there. I received the file in html format, the only form in which the file now exists. Does anyone know how to get such a file into a database such as Excel or Works? From there, I know exactly what to do. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Go to Vital Records - Marriages. Then go to Schenectady Co.
Does anyone know how indentures worked in the 1860s? My g.g.grandfather George Henry Lovett was in the Troy Orphan Asylum from 1863-1865 and then was indentured out to a George Sheldon of Willsboro,NY. Any one have any suggestions on how to get more info? Jackie
There are now 1,112 1880 federal census records for the 6th ward of Troy on line at my freepages site (see URL below). Today I was able to get the C's and D's on line. Tomorrow the plan is for E to G. If you would like to help transcribe, let me know. I will send you the census page and the spreadsheet template. All you need is a graphic program to open the census page and some time to transcribe. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner GenExchange Rensselaer County and Westchester County Coordinator http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=rensselaer http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=westchester Researching: Connors/OConnor, Flynn, Campbell, McEntee, Carter, Booth, Boyle, Smith, ORourke, Cullinan, Martin, Manning, Fahey, Healey http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
Hi All, There is a very interesting item on e bay. I wrote to the seller requesting names on the deeds. I signed it: Jenn O. Castleton. And this was his reply: >>>>Hi Jenn, Thanks for your interest in the deeds. Some of the names as best as I can read them: Peter Heinzer and wife Catharine, Village of Castleton (1886) Joseph Belser and wife Barbara (Castleton) (1887) Orris A. Clark and wife Rachel (Castleton) (1880) Bond: Helen Van Alstyne to Horace M Reynolds (1871) A transfer a land "being part of house lot 86" in Castleton from Susannah Niver (Newburgh) to William A.S. Sands and George N. Sands. Goes on to say that said premises was conveyed by Issac Eslick to Stephen Butler by indenture May 1,1811, assigned to John I. Kittle to Lucretia Clow and conveyed to Susannah Niver by deed April 1, 1867. >>>> I don't know if he just gave me these names because he thought I was just interested in Castleton. There may be more names in other locations, but this may be of interest to folks digging around in Castleton. Would anyone on this list know the name and address of the person responsible for keeping the records of the cemetery in Taborton, NY. I would appreciate this information if you do. Thanks, Bea Shibley
Hi, St. John's owns the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in E. Greenbush. However there was a fire in the early 1900's that destroyed a lot of their records. (typical) They ask that you write a letter to request your info: St. John's Church 50 Herrick St. Rensselaer, NY 12144 ATTN.: SR. ANDRE BECKER (518) 465-0482 Hope that helps. I know this isn't an appropriate topic for this list, but I keep getting email from MyFamily_Shops - the one today is entitled "Everyone Loves A Bargain" It crashes my email program if I try to open it, forward it, or do anything with it except delete it. This is very irritating. I've never had email from anywhere else in my 8-10 years on the net that did that Does anyone else get this email? And can you open it? If so, what mail program are you using? Barb Baxter http://www.pinehurst.net/genealogy/
If a family lived in Greenbush, NY and got married at St. John's Church Rensselaer, NY - where would they have been buried? I am looking for WILLIAM JOSEPH LEONARD who died in 1895 and his wife MARY HELEN LYNCH who died 1890. They were survived by one child MARY ANN "Mae" LEONARD born 1887. The orphaned child briefly lived with an Aunt Kate who had red hair. Aunt Kate had children, did not want to raise any more and gave the little girl up to a catholic organization. If anyone knows of this family, or where I might locate the parents grave site, I would appreciate hearing from you.
I have worked out the technical problems I was having and started getting the 6th ward on line at my freepages site (see URL below). As of this writing I have 367 records up for all surnames starting with A and B. If you see a name that looks like yours, but not spelled the same, please check it out. First of all, the enumerators were not all good spellers especially when dealing citizens from another country, speaking with an accent and not knowing how to read or write. Secondly, we had major problems reading the enumerators' hand writing, so in many cases we just had to guess at what they wrote. Again, I offer you a copy of any page in the 1880 census for your records if you will, in return, transcribe another page to help out with our project. My thanks to Bob McConihe and Lynn Grice who daily do two to four pages and keep me busy printing and scanning. Without them, this wouldn't be possible. If you write to me this week requesting pages and with offers of help, I probably won't get back to you until the weekend because I am working hard getting the rest of the 6th ward on line. By the way, the 6th ward is in the most southernist part of Troy where the Burden Iron Works and other mills were located. Now we are moving north to South Troy, the 12th Ward. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner GenExchange Rensselaer County and Westchester County Coordinator http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=rensselaer http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=westchester Researching: Connors/OConnor, Flynn, Campbell, McEntee, Carter, Booth, Boyle, Smith, ORourke, Cullinan, Martin, Manning, Fahey, Healey http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
Ok ya'll....sad news, this book has been sold. I will continue to do look ups today ONLY (1-29-01)! Then I am wrapping the book tonight to be mail to the new owner. I phoned Oakwood Cemetery, and my memory of the price was wrong. It is $2 per person, as stated in other emails (my first request was for 3 of them, and I got that mixed up with the price). It is also $2 for a "plot diagram", according to the caretaker. He said to write them a simple letter, and they will take it from there. From my experience, he did the research when I gave him either a rather firm date to go on, or an approximate year. That led to the plot diagram, and I requested everyone in the plot. Because of one of the ways the caretaker looks up the names of the buried (the Ms are arranged chronologically in a book rather than alphabetically - these books are open to the public), it might be reasonable to give a 10 year range, perhaps more. They also have a card index for his use only, but it might be to plot owners rather than to each individual. I'm not sure. Hi, I believe the Troy Public Library staff does this sort of thing for a fee. I don't know what the fee is, but they are probably the best repository for old Troy newspapers as well. You can probably check their website where there's a place to search their catalog to see if they have the newspaper in question. http://www.uhls.org/troy/ or email them at: troyref@uhls.lib.ny.us Here's their phone number and mailing address. I am happy to announce that due to the dedication of some subbers from this list, we have completely transcribed the 6th ward. This includes 4,557 entries (people), 817 families and 426 dwellings and the Troy Poorhouse. I want to publicly thank Lynn Grice, Bob McConihe, and MaryAnn McConnell for all the good work they did to make this possible. We are now working on the 12th ward. I will eventually get all the census data I have from both the 1880 and 1870 census up on the GenExchange website for Rensselaer (see URL below). They are currently updating their system and when that is done, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I will be putting it up gradually on my freepages genealogy site (see URL below). So far I just have up the Poorhouse. I have the A's ready to go but I am having some technical problems and I hope to straighten them up today. When it goes up on my site, you will see the following info: surname, first name, age, occupation, address, where born, where parents born, census page. If you find someone who you think is yours, I can send you the census page for your records, but in return will ask you to transcribe another page for the project. Our goal is to get the whole 1880 and 1870 Troy censuses on line (Also have Lansingburgh, Schaghticoke, Hoosick, Grafton, Pittstown and Petersburg.) The first emphasis is on the 1880 census because no index exists for that census. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA GenExchange Rensselaer County and Westchester County Coordinator http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=rensselaer http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=westchester Researching: Connors/OConnor, Flynn, Campbell, McEntee, Carter, Booth, Boyle, Smith, ORourke, Cullinan, Martin, Manning, Fahey, Healey http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
Barbara, While researching burials at Oakwood, the very helpful cemetery director informed me that the information captured for burials PRE-1900 included both parents of the deceased, if known. The maiden name of the mother is not always given, however. For burials AFTER 1900, the information recorded was typically for either the nearest living relative or the person supplying the information to the cemetery. I paid $2.00 per request about a year ago. Even if the fee were to be higher now, it certainly is more than reasonable, given the amount of information one receives in return. Good Luck. Carla Johnson
Barbara, 2-3 years ago, Oakwood Cemetery charged $3 per individual. I paid for everyone in two plots to learn some family relationships. To the surprise of the family I was helping, a father and mother, previously unknown, was buried in each plot. The names had not been known, and there was no knowledge that they had immigrated with the children. I recommend that you find out how many people are in the plot and then get information about all of them. The form that they fill in to send you gives Interment #, Name, Place of Birth, Last Residence, Age, Social State, Date of Death, Cause of Death, Date of Interment, Section and Lot, Funeral Director, and Nearest Relative or Friend. In every case, it gave the relationship to that nearest relative. If a parent was buried in the plot, the closest relative listed might be a son or daughter who was burying them. If the son or daughter were buried, it would not likely tell the name of the parents unless there was no spouse, and the parents were taking care of the burial. I don't believe it would tell BOTH parents, in any case. It would probably list the father unless he was dead, in which case the mother would be listed as nearest relative. In any event, it is very likely the person supplying the information who will be named. If the parents lived elsewhere, neither is likely to be mentioned as relative. I received a small piece of paper showing the name of the lot owner, list of everyone buried in the lot, arrangement of graves, and the surnames of the surrounding plots. It could show relatives in adjoining lots. Inquire about this piece of paper. They probably charge for it, but I don't know what it is called (lot description?). Oakwood Cemetery Head of 101st Street Troy, NY 12180 Phone 518-272-7520 Good luck. Cliff barbara mcadams wrote: > Hope someone can help me. Hi Barbara, Oakwood Cemetary is a valuable place to find information. I have found them to be very cordial and expedient with my requests. They charge $2.00 per name and they do have the names of the parents on much of their information. The address is: Oakwood Cemetary Head of 101st Street Troy NY 12180 I hope this helps. Kathy
Hope someone can help me. I have a list of my Osborn family that are buried in Oakwood Cemetery. It lists the Section Lot No. Burial # and Grave #. I was wondering if I write to the cemetery would they be able to tell me who the parents of these people are? What kind of information do they have? Does the cemetery charge for this service? Last does anyone have an address for the cemetery. Thank you for any information you may have. Barbara
Can anyone suggest a researcher or library facility that could, for a reasonable charge, copy an 1827 Troy newspaper article for me (presumably off microfilm)? I have the newspaper citation. Trying to verify parents of Melissa Carpenter: Melissa Ann Carpenter was born in Rensselaer Co., New York, Nov. 11, 1841, parents Henry and Maria (could be Westenhouse). She had sister called Adabelle. Trying to verify names from birth certificate or documents which give parents names. This family left Ny in 1867 for Wisconsin. This was according to obituary in a Wisc. newspaper. Any info welcome and appreciated. Darci http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~darci/
