Has anyone dealt with St. Peter's in Troy, NY. recently? I am just wondering what type of turn around to hope to hear from them. I sent them dates of birth, names, parent's names, etc., along with a self addressed stamped envelope. I don't know for certain if my relatives attended that parish or not, which I explained in my request. Thanks, Patti Smith
Looking for the marriage of John Deslauriers (spelled Delair, Dilar) to Mary Wilson around 1866, prob. in Lansingburgh. Also looking for the marriages of John's other siblings --named Edward, George, Francois, Louis, Maria, Olivier, and Josephine, all during the 1850's and 1860's within the county. All help appreciated! Thanks Jackie, in Texas
I haven't posted a message in quite awhile so I thought I would try again now. I am looking for any information about the AGAN family in Rensselaer county, particularly in Pittstown and Grafton. I am particularly interested in finding the parents of my GGG Grandfather John L.Agan born 1812 died in 1877. John married Margaret BRENENSTUHL. I am descended from their son Calvin who served in the civil war. Any info would be appreciated. I am willing to share any info I have if you are researching the AGAN or BRENENSTUHL lines. D.Guynup

Yup, NY didn't have to do birth certificates before 1880. Sorry for your wasted time If you know whereabouts in Troy the family was living at the time of their births, all you need to do is find the closest Catholic Church (odds are that was their parish). If you don't already have this info, you might look in the City Directories for the years around that time. Pat and his helpers did a phenomenal job on the 1880 Troy census for the 6th Ward. I tried to transport selected 6th ward census entries into spreadsheets and finally hit upon one that worked. I selected several entries, did a copy (CTRL+C) and then an insert (SHFT+INS) into a new Excel spreadsheet. Everything was transported correctly. I had to widen a few columns to make some fields fit, but that only took a few seconds. Now I can sort the resultant spreadsheet for any field(s) and get even more use out of it. Thanks again, Gerry Duffy
Hello, I stumbled upon a possible record that I never knew existed this weekend. While looking at a FHC microfilm roll that was filmed from some books found in the Troy library, the author makes note that, "the 1830's-1891 death [and] burial records for Troy, NY have been microfilmed by the Gen. Society of Utah as of Oct. 1955." The note also says to chech the burial records of the Dept. of Vital Statistics, and that these original books are stored as of 1976 in the office of Recreation, City Hall, 3rd floor. I have forms from the Dept. of Vital Stats., and am about to request death records. The employees there only mentioned death records, not burial records. From the above author's note, it seems like two distinct records exist, and that the burial records could offer valuable genealogical information. Has anyone here researched burial permit records? How can I request them from the Dept. of Vital Stats.? What information do I need to request them other than that provided for death certs.? In advance, your response is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brooke Myers
I got some bad news on Saturday. I received a letter from City Hall (Dept. of Vital Stats) in Troy. They sent back my letter of request for my GGgranfather's and my GGUncle's birth certificates, along with a note saying they do not have records prior to November of 1880. I don't know which Catholic Church they belonged to. Is there anywhere else I can find this info? I am looking for an 1842 and an 1848 birth certificate. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice I get! Patti (Gray)Smith
The whole 6th ward is up on line now at the freepages url (see below). There are 4,557 entries/names. Many thanks to Bob McConihe, Lynn Grice and MaryAnn McConnell who helped transcribe it. Without them, this would not be possible. The complete entries will be up on GenExchange soon and I'll let you know when that happens. They will also include marital status, race, whether they could read or write, babies under a year's month of birth, newlyweds month of marriage, and many interesting items under notes. We are now working on the 12 Ward which includes St. Joseph's Church and it's surroundings in South Troy. To all of you who wrote to volunteer, I will be getting back to you today. Now that I have the whole ward up (took a week to format and upload), I have time to print and scan census pages to send to you. If anyone finds some family in the census, I will be glad to send you a copy of the census page if you, in turn, transcribe another page for future on line research. Thanks to everyone who has written me. Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
I have been on this list before but believe I have not given my search information. I had a gguncle, James C. Scullin, who married Tacy M.[SCRIVEN] about 1849. Their first daughter was born in MA, but they returned to Grafton about 1850. I believe this was because Tacy was a Scriven. I am trying to track down what happened to James. This is my the information that leads to my mystery: Troy Directories: 1864,1866,1867-James Scullin Peddler,address-2nd and Main in South Troy Troy Directories: 1868,1869 Mrs. James C. Scullin, address-557 2nd The 1870 directory has her living at 557 1st. I assume since she was not listed as James' widow, he was still alive. Troy Directory: 1890 lists Elizabeth Scullin widow of James Scullin, address-Vanderheyden C. 6th Ave.,Troy James did not have a son, so I am going on the premise, that James must have divorced and married an Elizabeth. I have not been to Troy and I do not know about divorce records and since I have not narrowed down a possible marriage date for James and Elizabeth I can't search for a marriage record. James seems to have left Troy since he was not in 1870 directory. Interesting thing I found his single brother living at the same address as Tacy M. Scullin in the 1870 directory. They were living with Chloe, Tacy and James' daughter. She was an unmarried schoolteacher. Around 1877-78 Chloe and her mother Tacy left for Iowa for Chloe's marriage. I have been to their burial place and James is not there. If anyone in Troy knows where my James C. Scullin is buried, Pleeeeeze let me know or give me an idea what to do next. Thanks so much for listening. Joan Firth Kaysen
The parents of Peter W. Boright were: Henry Boright, born 8 Aug 1803, NY, died 23 Mar 1863, Chatham, Columbia County, NY and Susanna Hoysradt, born 15 Sep 1805, Dutchess Co, NY; died 23 Oct 1892. I believe that the Boright ancestors spelled their name as Barheit. Jo Anne On Sat, 03 Feb 2001 11:45:44 -0600, beloved-rock@worldnet.att.net wrote: > I have a Peter W. hello list, and Jackie in particular, I was intrigued by your question about indenturing from the orphanage. My grgrandmother Cora TURCK , born in Renss. Co., was 'half-orphaned' after her father remarried her 'evil' stepmother. I have no clue what happened to her, but she appears on the other side of the state -near Buffalo when she is ten. Just recently a cousin used the term that she had been an indentured servant (I dismissed it as meaning she was from Europe) but I was fascinated to hear the term used, I guess, with placement by the orphange. I am waiting for anyone to answer your particular question about how it worked, but my other question is whether or not you know of records that exist for the Troy Orphan Asylum. Cora would have been a candidate for an orphanage from about 1867 till 1878. Her younger sister Ida Anna TURCK wasn't 'kicked out' of the house until after 1870. Family tradition mentions a St Luke's Orphanage i n NYC for her, but parts of that story don't sit right. Any pointers on Orphan research would be greatly appreciated. I have a Peter W. Boright of Chatham married to Mary Caroline Landt of Chatham, I have seen this family mentioned before, but believe it was from the Landt side, does any one know who Peter's parents were? There are several Peter's in that era, am trying to connect the rigth Peter with Henry and Susannah Borigth. S. Lee
There are now 3,066 names up on line for the 6th Ward, Troy, 1880 Federal Census. See my freepages url below. Hope to get the remaining up by tomorrow night. Then we will start getting the 12th ward ready. It is almost all transcribed. If you have Irish ancestors who lived in Troy in 1880, you will probably find them in the 6th and 12th ward. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
I would like to contact anyone researching TEFFT or TIFT in Stephentown NY. Marty Irons Descendant of George TIFT (1754-1813) and Rebecca BROWN (1757-1813)
Thanks for all your work, Cliff - Suppose I wanted to look over the "books" that contain the 61,000 burials for the name "Taylor" in Columbia Co. and I don't really know who I am looking for (looking for a potential father for my Philo Taylor" and know lots of the family names). Is there any way short of going there that this could be don? If not, where would I find hard copies of this information? I'm also looking for a Benjamin Davenport but I do see lots of the other family memebers. I like to go through "original" stuff because I find lots of hints that way. The Harlemville Cemetery records (274) were transcribed by Marion Kern long ago. They passed to Wendy McLean who submitted them to me. This is the first time these records have been online. As hard as it may be to believe, this is the *largest* Columbia Co. cemetery transcription online to date. There are now 2,125 entries (half the ward) for the above census on my freegpages site (url below). It now goes through Kynan. This is taking time getting it all on line but hope to complete by Sunday. We are also almost through the 12th ward and that will go up next. The 6th and 12th wards are in South Troy and where most of the Irish immigrants settled. All my ggrandparents lived in these two wards and even though I have been working on this census for months, yesterday when the Connors names went up, I found someone I hadn't seen before! Thanks again to Lynn Grice, Bob McConihe and MaryAnn McConnell who did most of the transcribing. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nymets/
Hello Listers, A couple questions here. First, I am reading an obituary for my ggrandfather (dod: Dec. 17, 1916) and see that he was a member of the Married Men's Sodality. Not sure if this was connected to St. Joe's Church or not (which is where he attended). Second, the article says that he held various positions such as Alderman, School Commissioner (during Mayor Whelan's admin.), rep. of 9th ward Common Council (1893), and was connected with the Dept. of Charities and Correction (during Mayor Conway's admin.). Also was master plumber at D&H RR. Would anyone know where I could start searching for any records that might yield more info. on this individual? Or if records might even exist? What was the Dept. of Charities and Correction? Last, one article lists the pallbearers as: Thomas. H. MCDONOUGH, John MALONEY, Peter ROSENBERGER, Patrick HOGAN, John FITZGERALD, Henry COTE, William DWYER, and John J. HEALY. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? I have a picture of my ggrandfather with a few other men...all who are unidentified except for one...Henry COTE. I'd love to identify the others in this picture, and perhaps that will give me a clue as to the purpose it was taken (i.e. club picture, etc.). Anyone who is researching the above names, please let me know and I will forward you a scanned copy of my picture. Perhaps you can identify an ancestor? Thanks, Brooke
