I've been requested by Pat Connors to pass this information on. Hope it helps you. I found my gg-grandfather in the1850 Clinton County census. When I checked the index for 1860 and 1870 I couldn't find him. I had no idea where he went. I was checking the 1860 Clinton County census for another branch of the family and I ran across my gg-grandfather and his entire family. I then went to the 1870 census and found him again. So don't go by the index. I had the same experience with another family member in another county. So if you think your family was in a certain place and they don't appear in the census index, check the census anyway. Barbara
Hello all, Am new to this list and unfamiliar with the town of Castleton but....having relatives buried there with no indication of a cemetery name, wonder if there are several burial grounds? If there is a cemetery that is partisan to the Methodist Episcopal church, how can I obtain monument or burial info? David in Scarborough ON
I don't know anything about checking for information on a Revolutionary War entry so would appreciate any help anyone can give me on finding out more about the following soldier: On Rensselaer Co. Web site: Under town of Lansingburgh: from "History of Rensselaer Co., New York" was this entry: Capt. Noble's company of Col. Stephen I. Schuyler's Albany Militia, Aug. 11, 1777: Paget, John, Private I believe that this John Paget is actually John PADGETT who lived in Troy and while in the war, he came home and had to evacuate his family, accompanied by a company of Light Horse, from Troy to Albany due to Tory threats to kill him. John came to America from England just prior to Rev. War but "although an Englishman he was true to the country of his adoption and served her interests and fought for her freedom all through the war with the mother country" as per his granddaughter's written history. An entry in "New York in the Revolution" stated donations were to be distributed to Distressed Inhabitants in Albany County..... and under names of the "poor" was John Padgett, which I beleive came as a result of their fleeing Troy and losinig everything they had & ended up in Albany and thus showing up in 1790 wher a John Padgett was living in Rensselearwyck Manor on Schuyler's lands and about two years later moved to Oxford, Chenango Co., NY. Any help anyone can give me to try to ascertain if my John Padgett was the Private John Paget in Capt. Noble's compnay of Capt. Schuyler's militia would be immensely appreciated! This has been a brick wall for a long time. Sandy Goodspeed, Maryland, NY
The 9th ward is now on line through the M's at the URL below my name on the Troy page. An interesting personal note I am going to share to illustrate why you should look at all spellings and why you should always go to the source document for accuracy. The index we have on line is meant to help you with your research and if you find an ancestor on it, you shouldn't stop there and use it as your documentation. My ggrandmother was MaryAnn McEntee who emigrated to Troy with her parents and at least two brothers in the early 1860s from Co. Mayo, Ireland. I have found them in the 1865 NY state census and the 1870 Fed Census in Troy but was unable to find them in the 1880 census until today when I was formatting the 9th ward to put on line! You will see there are no McEntees listed but you will find Patrick (my gggrandfather) 80 yrs and son Michael listed as McAnty. Also her brother, Edward and his family are McIntee. So there is the family but under different spellings. Another oddity.... For Edward, it says he was born in NY and his father was born in England??? All the the previous censuses have him born in Ireland like the rest of his family. So now I will go to the source document to see what it says. There may be errors in transcribing or more probable with the enumerator who went to their house and didn't understand their Irish brogue. What this did for me is show me Patrick was still alive in 1880 and that Bridget my gggrandmother (his wife) died between 1875 and 1880. This will help when looking for obituaries, church records, etc. I would love to hear some other census stories. This is a good forum for them. It helps us all understand the obstacles involved with genealogy research. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Hebron, NY, is in Washington County. A google search (www.google.com) produced the following sites: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywashin/"> Washington County NYGenWeb Project</A> and specifically, <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywashin/hebart.htm">Hebron, Washington Co., NY </A> . What names are you searching for? My grandmother and her sisters (Elizabeth, Teresa and Margaret) ROURKE, all of whom eventually lived and married in Troy, NY, were born in Washington County in the late 1880's. Their parents were Michael J. ROURKE (1859-1925) and Mary Margaret MCGARVEY (1864-1932). Michael's parents were Michael O'ROURKE (c. 1830-1889), who later dropped the O from his name and Mary CRANSBUR (c. 1827-1918). They are listed in Hebron in Washington County, NY in the census of 1860, 1870 and 1880. Mary Margaret MCGARVEY's parents were Patrick MCGARVEY (1834-1898) and Mary FARRELLY (1837-1907). I have transcribed the 1872-1891 baptisms of the Presbyterian Church in Valatie. There are 102 records, which is all that was available to me. The baptisms are for both adults and children, but the dates of birth are given for the children only. Those dates span the range of 1866-1891. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Bp/BP-ValPresby-alph.htm Let me know if you find anyone important. Cliff

Hello All, I've run across a place of death for my gggrandfather, Thomas Myers, as "Brothers Asylum." His reason for death was listed "Inflammation Lungs," and died in 1878. Anyone have any idea where this Asylum was, or what it was? Any idea if it might have existing records and where they'd be? Thanks So Much, Brooke
Has anyone heard of a Hebron, NY? Someone I am interested in researching was born there in 1810. I can't find it in my road atlas or on Mapquest. A search on dogpile yielded nothing also. I just checked the 1880 Troy Census that Pat & her band of volunteers have been busy putting together, and found 3 of my 4 family lines. This really has filled in some gaps, and given me a somewhat better time frame for some of my ancestors. Thanks for all your hard work. I appreciate it... and your help. And a special thanks to Pat for all she does! Mary Yonkers NY
Hi, I'm new to the list & I'm looking for info on a Ramón A. MARTIN believed to have been born in the Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY or Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer Co., NY area. I'm not sure of his birthdate but it would be between 1906-07. He & his wife were living in Denver, Denver Co., CO, bet. 1958-66. Their home in Denver, was sold in 1965. They originally lived at 2355 W. Arkansas, which they owned, and moved to 3129 W. Arkansas in about 1965. They sold the house to Alan K. and Jean E. Plummer. I don't know if they moved from the Denver area or they died by 1966. They did have children & they may still be in the NY or CO area! Ramón A. MARTIN was a Laison engineer & he worked for Denver Highway Dept. at one time and later for Sunstrand Corp. His wife's name was Shirley B. (maiden name unknown). His mother's name was Helen B. MARTIN (maiden name unknown). Ramón had a sister Lois MARTIN, b. 11 Mar 1924 & d. Aug 1973. She married a Jerrald (sic) B. POTTS, b. 4 Dec 1918 & d. 30 Oct 1998 in Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY. They died without issue. Jerrald B. POTTS' father was Jerrald C. POTTS, b. 1885 & d. Jan 1980 in Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer Co., NY. I would very much like to have info on Ramón, his wife &/or any descendants--it is of great importance that this family be found, especially the descendants! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)
I have started uploading the census to the URL (Troy page) below my name. It is going up by alphabet and I am through the Bs. Keep checking because I will be uploading it in pieces all week. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I am happy to announce that we have finished transcribing the 9th ward and I am currently formatting it to put on line at the URL below my name. Some will go up today and gradually the whole ward will be on line probably by the end of the week. I have moved the other wards, 6th and 12th also to this site and have put links on my freepages site to the new site. The 9th ward contained 4,533 names, 885 families and they lived in 480 dwellings. Those who transcribed this ward are: Bob McConihe, Lynn Grice, Dorsey Clark, Joan Firth-Kaysen, Ron Mauer, Brooke Myers and Mary Ann McConnell. We now have three wards completed for a total of 13,101 names, 2,432 families and 1,333 dwellings! These volunteers are to be commended for giving up their free time to get this census on line. We currently have the 11th ward more than half way transcribed and will then do the 8th ward which will move us more to the center of Troy. By the way, you will find more of a mixture of emigrants in the 9th ward. It is not totally Irish like the other two seemed to be. There are many more German, English and French Canadians in this ward. Again, I warn you when you check the census, look for all the spellings of the surname. Sometimes the enumerator spelled the name wrong and sometimes the handwriting is just too hard to read so we had to guess. If you see a (sic) near any entry, it means the transcriber recognizes the data is wrong but that is how the enumerator entered it. Also, my son is working on putting all this data into a database and creating a form so you can search on the site rather than go into each ward. This is taking time, however, since he is a busy man. If anyone would like to volunteer to help with the transcription, we will appreciate your help. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

My Brick Wall is Tunis ARNOLD, b. 29 Nov 1813 in Westerlo, Albany, NY. He must have dropped in from another planet! Or perhaps Rensselear County? Seeking names of parents and siblings. Tunis m. Looking to hear from other family researchers of John Curtis HOXIE (1826-1905). John, the s/o Lyman G. HOXSIE & Lucretia CURTIS, was born in Bergen, Genesee Co., NY. The family moved for a short time to Lucas Co. OH in 1836 and then again to NY. In 1846 John married Almeda L. DAVIS, (1828-1917) either in Albion, Orleans Co. or Chenango Co. NY. Almeda was the d/o Job Greene DAVIS & Susan MONEY (d/o Asahel) of Lincklaen, Chenango Co., NY, all 3 of whom migrated to Caledonia, Waupaca Co., WI in 1855. John and Almeda also migrated in 1855 to the adjoining county of Outagamie, WI from DeRuyter, Rensselaer Co., NY. John was the first mayor of New London, Waupaca Co., WI and served in that capacity two more times. John and Almeda migrated to Florida in the early 1890's. John & Almeda had two children that I'm aware of, Albert Eugene HOXIE and Catherine "Kittie" (HOXIE) WILLIAMS-SPRINGSTEAD. Albert HOXIE & Jennie SIBLEY had a son, George HOXIE (m. Edith D. KETCHUM) who was a lawyer in Clintonville, Outagamie Co., WI. Albert later married Augusta SCHABEL and they removed to St. Petersburg, Pinellas Co., FL. John died in 1905 and Almeda in 1917 but it is not known to me where they died or were buried. G. Maria Davis-Johnson mjohnson@digitaldune.net Yuma, Arizona USA
