I am happy to announce that the 8th ward is currently going on line at the URL below my name under Troy. We now have the following wards on line: 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, and 12th. This is a total of 19,555 people, 1,926 families and 3,755 dwellings. Here are the people you should thank for all the hard work they have done to transcribe this census so others can be helped: Ron Mauer, Dorsey Clark, Lynn Grice, Bob McConihe, Carol Waldron, Joan Firth-Kaysen and MaryAnn McConnell. Without them, this wouldn't be possible. Again, I warn you, check all spellings for your surname. The enumerators spelled many of our surnames wrong, plus it is very hard to read their handwriting. If you would like to join this volunteer project, email me privately. Happy hunting. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
I hope someone can help me. I looked at the 1855 NY State Census for Nassau, Rensselaer County. I found my g-g-grandfather, James Nelson Spickerman, living at his uncle John G. Budd's residence. The other people living at that residence were John's wife Sarah, two servants by the names of Frederick Kirk and Susan Neper, and James' wife Jane. Who is Jane?! To my knowledge my g-g-grandfather moved to Illinois around 1859 and married my g-g-grandmother Julia Ann Whaples in 1860. There was never a mention of James being married before. I'm wondering what churches were in existence at the time between 1850 and 1855 since James was single in the 1850 NY Federal Census for Nassau, Rensselaer County. I realize that they might have not been married in the area, but I have nothing else to go on. And I'm assuming Jane must have died because divorce was not that popular back then. Jennifer
I am sending this to several mail lists which I am on to help those who have AOL 6.0 and are getting messages bounced by Rootsweb. I've been frustrated since Rootsweb's servers were upgraded a few weeks ago and have been unable to post on a mail list (occasionally one would get through). I corresponded with Rootsweb yesterday, and below is their very helpful answer. AOL 6.0 has been putting our mail text into html coding, so It requires us to do two additional steps before sending to a Rootsweb list. It only takes five seconds. Hope this helps all of us frustrated AOL members. A copy of what I received is below my name. Ruth Cherecwich Hi, Ruth. The message you posted to the HelpDesk does contain some HTML coding; this is a common problem with AOL 6.0. We've had AOL members give us two approaches which might work for you: AOL 6 -- plain text 1) Compose your email as normal in AOL 6. 2) Right click the text scroll box. 3) Select Select All. 4) Right click text again and select text Normal. 5) Send the email. And: AOL says that 6.0 users with plain-text problems should use the following alternatives to send plain text only: 1. When authoring mail in AOL 6.0 remove all formatting from the message body and send the message in the AOL 6.0 default of Arial, size 10 - do not include any bold, italics, underline, colors, or other styles. 2. Use AOL Mail on the Web (at http://www.aol.com) to send mail - AOL Mail on the Web sends mail as plain text only. We've also seen some problems with 6.0 users where cutting and pasting has resulted in backgrounds unknowingly being picked up and resulting in total gibberish. To counter this problem, you can copy to Notepad, save as text, and then copy/paste from Notepad.

Beth, The death or burial information may contain a typo. The death was on the 15th and the burial was on the 17th. Jun and Jul were most likely the same month and somebody either handwrote or typed one wrong letter. Cliff BBakenhus wrote: > Would anyone know where Forest Park Cemetery was? Forest Park Cemetery is in the Town of Brunswick and is now being maintained by the Town. It was planned as one of those fancy Victorian, park-like cemeteries. The Town of Brunswick Historian, Sharon Zankel has the records or access to them. Her address is on the Rensselaer County GenWeb page. <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrensse/">Rensselaer County GENWEB</A> < http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrensse/ >

Hi listers. I want to thand everyone who responded to my questions about the WPA. I really appreciate the ideas and information. Arleen
We are stuck and need help. Our Irish ancestors seem to have left so little record of their existence that I'm losing hope of making any progress at all. They moved back and forth between Nassau and Chatham and seem to have 'fallen through the cracks' of time ... most of their significant events happened in the early 1880s, just before Columbia and Renss. Counties began keeping records. Maybe someone on the list has an idea for us to pursue. My great great grandfather, Thomas Maguire, was listed on the 1880 Nassau, NY census (#175) at age 65, Laborer, as father-in-law in the family of Daniel and Ella Crenby. We're pretty confident that 'Crenby' is a census error and is rightfully Crowley. Daniel Crowley witnessed the August 14, 1870 marriage of James Maguire, son of Thomas and my great grandparents, to Mary Hogan . The marriage event is listed in the records of St. John the Baptist Church (Catholic) in Valatie. James was about 25, Mary about 20. A Thomas McGuire died in the Alms House in Ghent, NY at age 77. This Thomas fits in every way our profile for my great grandfather. Born in Ireland between 1815 and 1817, coming to America between 1857 and 1859, he died of typhoid fever, very much unknown. James and Mary were listed on the 1880 Nassau census with 3 small children, who were all born in or around Chatham, NY. My grandfather, Thomas Edward McGuire, was born on June 12, 1880, evidently in the Nassau area, too late to have made the census. Not long after his birth -- although we don't know how long -- both James and Mary died. Three of the orphans were 'taken in by other Irish families,' possibly related families. James, Jr. was taken in by Sullivan, Ellen by Heeney, my grandfather Thomas by Dugan. There is no record of what happened to the fourth child, Mary. Maybe she died with the parents, or, and what I believe is a likely scenario, she is the Mary Maguire who died of diptheria in Valatie on March 15, 1885 at age 12 3/4. Except for the marriage notation for James and Mary Hogan, the death record for Thomas in the Alms House, and a baptism notation (January 26, 1875) for Ellen at St. John's, the trail is cold. Records simply don't go back far enough. This young Irish couple with 3 small children and an infant in a brief ten years of their beginning a life together were dead, and like their parents, left little to know them by. Death records for the adult children yield no information other than the names and Irish birth of the parents, James and Mary. With the death of my great grandparents, everything about them was lost. Or seems to have been. We know that Thomas, with wife Mary (last name unknown) and at least 3 children, came to U.S. between 1857 and 1859. We can't find any ship's list with their names. The family was listed on the 1865 Nassau census when my great grandfather James was 20. If we are to ever learn anything more about my ancestors, their origins in Ireland, the ship they came over on, anything more at all, we need help. We need fresh ideas, some steering. Our last hope is in finding a death certificate for Ellen (Helen Clare MaGuire) Maguire (or McGuire) who was taken in by a Heeney family and who married Eugene Heeney by Catholic Clergy in Valatie on 25th November, 1899. They lived in Kinderhook. Her husband Eugene is buried in the Kinderhook cemetery in a family plot but my (Great) Aunt Nell is not buried there with him. We know she died after October 24, 1958, having attended the funeral of my grandfather Thomas. She would have been 82 at the time. She was born in 1876 (or 1875) in Chatham. I can't order the Death Certificate for Ellen Maguire Heeney without knowing the year of her death, and am unable to get to the Archives in Albany. If anyone happens to be searching the archives and comes across her name, would you let me know? My feeling is that of the children, Ellen could have been the one with some knowledge of her parents, James and Mary. My hope is that her Death Certificate might contain their roots in Ireland. My second hope is that someone may know of the existence of records in Nassau or Rensselaer County for the transfer of orphaned children to private homes. Would the families taking them in have had to go through a special process, something formal, or might they have simply assumed responsibility for the children with no formal happenings at all? Of course, if James and Mary were both already seriously ill at the time my grandfather was born, the children could have been 'farmed out' as we used to say, with caring others, and then simply remained in those homes. Is that possible? Would the State or County have had any say or interest? Thomas and James both worked in the mill in Malden Bridge. Would there be mill records somewhere? My final thought is to be put in touch with Crowley and/or Hogan families ... :) ... that's really reaching, I know, but maybe I'd find the one descendant with even a bit of oral history about these elusive Maguire/McGuire ancestors. If anyone has any idea at all for me for a next step, I'd be grateful to hear. Miki in Vermont

I am searching for the descendants of Daniel and Nancy GILLESPIE GALLAGHER of County Mayo, who resided in Waukesha, Wisconsin, during the second half of the nineteenth century. Daniel was a shoemaker there, having moved to Waukesha from Hoosick Falls, New York, in the mid 1850's. Both he and Nancy died in Waukesha, Dan in 1893 and Nancy in 1903. Their children were Patrick H. (wf. Margaret MURPHY), Kate, John, Hugh L. (wf. Louisa KNIPFEL), Margaret (husb. Charles F. GIBBONS), Daniel, Jr., Anna (husb. James T. MAHONEY-music dealer), Mary (husb. Herbert J. MJELDE), and Ellen. Patrick H. had at least two children: Mary "Elsie" (husband Henry ROE), and Margaret (husband Henry REHBERG.) Margaret and Henry had three children: Urban, Leo, and Marie. Mary "Elsie" and Henry ROE moved to Iowa, possibly Sioux City. They had at least four children: Zeta, Vanetta, Henry, and Benjamin. Margaret Gibbons moved to Chicago and died there. Daniel, Jr. may have moved there, too. Mary moved to Montana. Hugh L. died in Waukesha 1897. Not certain about the rest. I have checked what I believe to be all of the vital records for the Gallaghers at the Waukesha County Courthouse. Now I need some help connecting from the more recent generations. I would be interested in establishing contact with any of the descendants of Daniel and Nancy. If any of this sounds familiar, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks very much. Mike Dellger
Having been a transcriber myself, I know how much time people put into transcribing things. I also know that you hope but never know if you are helping someone. I would like to personally thank Pat and all those for her transcribing data on her web site. I found another generation and siblings to an illusive branch of my family tree. A little history: When my Dad went to bury his Dad, he went to fill out the paper work. At the point where he filled out his father's parentage, his uncle interjected saying that he was wrong. His biological grandmother had died in child birth after his Dad and he was never told. Who ever worked on the 11th ward was able to help me to find these people! I also working on putting a search engine on site to make it easier to find your ancestors. Happy hunting. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
It was also the WPA that we have to thank for lots of biographical sketches in books and for many cemetery listings. Although their transcriptions may have some errors, they did great overall. Arleen, I went to www.google.com, a search engine and entered WPA in the search window and received plenty of things to look at. The WPA (Works Progress Administration) was a 1930's "New Deal" program to put people to work. As Social Security started at about the same time, your grandfather was evidently one of the workers in the program. Some of the workers were artists, writers, etc. The following URL will take you to a copy of the WPA employee handbook. http://newdeal.feri.org/misc/faq/index.htm Let me know if you need any help getting to the information. Peter Van Rensselaer Curtis was born 1801 in Rennselaer County, NY and died 1866 in West Virginia. He married Elizabeth Dolin(Nov 30, 1822), Jane Toney (1844), and Isabell Carrow (September 17, 1861). Peter was born in NY, moved to Brown County, OH, and then to Delaware County, Iowa. Does anyone have any information about him or why his middle name would be Renssalaer. I was just wondering and thought that some of you who know more about the history of the county might be able to help with some background information. Any help would be appreciated. Kathy in WV
