    2. In a message dated 4/16/01 11:09:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time, nymets11@pacbell.net writes: << Again, I warn you to look up all varieties of your surname and to check the microfilm for the original source document before putting the entries into your records. This project is to be used as in index only. >> Pat: First, thank you to yourself and all those transcribing the census data, I just wanted to send an example of spelling errors made by the enumerators during the census to prove your point about checking all spellings. My gggrandparents were listed as Lenard and the correct spelling is Leonard. They were in the 6th ward. The second problem was their address was listed as Mill St. but their 6, 8, and 12 year old children were listed on the next page as Vanderburgh Ave. (They must have lived in the corner house.) If I didn't already have a copy of this census page than I would have had a few sleepless nights trying to figure this one out. Until I looked at your index I never even noticed the name was misspelled on the census, I knew where they were located in 1880 and just found the sheet with the Mill St. address and found their name never really checking the spelling. So if you don't find your family, don't give up just try another spelling.

    2. Pat Connors
    3. Well, they did it again! The following people have just finished transcribing the 2nd Ward. Bob McConihe, Betsy Robson, Mary Ann McConnell, Lynn Grice, Joan Firth Kaysen, Dorsey Clark and Carol Waldron. They come from all over this country. This was our biggest ward -- 4,882 people, 580 dwellings and 970 families. Plus, this was a very difficult ward to transcribe. The first 80 pages were very light and there are still many ?? in boxes because we could not read the microfilm. Also, when it got darker, the enumerator couldn't spell and used very fancy swirls in his handwriting which made is so hard to read the names. But, it will start going up on line tomorrow at the url below my name. Again, I warn you to look up all varieties of your surname and to check the microfilm for the original source document before putting the entries into your records. This project is to be used as in index only. So far we have finished six wards (the 1st ward is also almost complete). This totals 24,417 people, 2,506 dwellings and 4,725 families. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. Re: QUESTIONS-[Rensselaer] Names don't match
    2. Thank you for all the insight. Questions now....if you don't mind. How does the state census differ from the federal, other than the index issue? Different info gathered? Can I obtain this through LDS? Anywhere else? I have the funeral notice of the son who died in Webster, MA. Where Thomas' parents, William/Edward and his wife Ellen are, God only knows. I am planning on sending for the cemetery info on Thomas who died in Webster. Would that have genealogical info in it? As for contacting Troy cemeteries, would they do a search with what little I have about William/Edward? I don't know age or anything. City directories....I have tried to get lookups on the NY-census lookup mailing list to no avail. Can I get these some way other than traveling to the Troy library? If so I will but I haven't had any feed back on how to obtain this info. As far as their religion goes, no luck there either. Thomas' funeral was Methodist and his brother James raised his family Catholic. I have contacted 3 Catholic churches in Troy, (I was told they were the oldest) since I am looking for 1840 info. I have heard from 2-nothing there and have yet to hear from the third. I thought I would go this route first because from oral history says that William and Ellen immigrated from Ireland. It has been about 2 and 1/2 months. Is that considered a normal wait time? Any thoughts on this religion quandry? And to top it off........In the 1880 and 1900 census for Illinois, James lists his parents as both born in Ireland. In 1880 and 1900 census for Mass. Thomas on the other hand lists his parents as both born in NY!! Crazy kids! Thanks so much! Patti Orlando, Fl

    3. I am sure many will respond to this. I have found both incorrect information on death certificates and in the local newspaper. I spent a lot of time chasing my tail looking for my ggggrandfather by the wrong name. It was not until I found out that he went by his middle name almost all of the time. I found out that this was a very common occurrence with my German ancestors. So it is just as likely that one (or both) of your sources are incorrect.(don't we all love genealogy) Since you have the funeral notice of this person, look to see if a church or cemetery is mentioned and look there for records. I have found many, many helpful people at the Troy cemeteries. Another easy way to verify relationships is the city directories. There is probably a year or two were the sons were living at home and working, so their names would show up in the city directories with their parents (since only working persons are listed, along with widows, persons who leave the town and the occasional marriage). If you start looking around the mid 1850's you should see them. Make sure you check every year though, cause the info. you can piece together from them is remarkable. Another place you could look is the state census. They are not indexed (that I know), so its a longer search than the fed Census. If you have an idea what part of town they lived in it makes it easier. On that note, if you know were about in town they lived, you can locate the closest church (of their particular religion) and ask them for help. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <chripasmith@aol.com> To: <> Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2001 10:03 AM Subject: [Rensselaer] Names don't match > I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone has had the same problem. 1. [Rensselaer] Names don't match
    2. I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone has had the same problem. On researching my ancestors, my ggrandfather, James (alias John) Gray and his brother Thomas Lyman Gray were born in Troy in 1842 and 1848, respectively. In researching their parents, names, places, dates, etc. I found the death certificate of one of Thomas and it listed his parents as William and Ellen Gray (no maiden name :( unfortunately) . I was happy nonetheless to find out names. I recently, found his funeral write up, which one on the front page of the local newspaper (the most exciting thing about this also is that it also has his PICTURE!!). In the write up it says that his parents were Mr. and Mrs. EDWARD Gray! Now I don't know what to do. I have yet to find them all together in the Troy census. I looked under William and Edward and no luck. Has anyone else had this kind of discrepancy and what should be my next move? I haven't found any birth certs yet and one marriage cert didn't even ask for the names of the parents but Thomas' VR(marriage) said William and Ellen. How would one thing for Thomas have William and then in his obit it says Edward? Maybe the family didn't have the slightest knowledge of their father/husband parents info? Any thoughts? Thanks, Patti

    2. Next Friday, 20 April 2001, at 10:30 a.m., there will be a meeting of the Rensselaer County Special Interest Group of the Capital District Genealogical Society at the Brunswick Historical Society Meeting Room at the Garfield School on Route 2 at Moonlawn Road in Eagle Mills Village, Town of Brunswick. Anyone interested in Genealogical Research in Rensselaer County is invited to attend. Invited guests are: Rens. Co. Clerk Frank Merola and or his Deputy Clerk and Records Management Officer Greg DeJulio, Ruth Sweet from the Troy Public Library, Kathy Sheehan and probably Jim Corsaro from the Rensselaer County Historical Society, and Don and Clare Radz who did the Rensselaer County Cemetery Census for LDS. I know that many of you are from out of the area, and so I am inviting you to send me questions that ask "Where do I find . . . in Rensselaer County? These can not be specific research questions like Who is the mother of Joe Schmoo? As time allows, and if time allows, I will ask the questions for you and post the answers as fast as I can and to the best of my ability. I wish you could all be there. I think we're all going to learn something. Marie

    1. [Rensselaer] Grace Methodist Church
    2. Jennifer Nordyke
    3. Someone did research on a family member and put down that a couple were married at Grace Methodist Church on 26 Dec 1851. Is there a Grace Methodist Church in Nassau? I'm not sure which church this is, but I'm assuming it was in Nassau because the family resided in Nassau. The person had written down that Phebe Spickerman m. Edward M. Krum. I think the person is wrong--it was actually Eliza Spickerman. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks, Jennifer

    1. [Rensselaer] Asa Douglas
    2. There is a picture of the Asa Douglas House, also known as the Shumway House in "Stephentown Historical Album, 1977," published by the Stephentown Historical Society. It is located on Pease Rd., very near the present Mass. border. His land was originally within the territory of Massachusetts, now this area is part of New York. "Stephentown Historical Society, Album #4", published 1992, shows a photo of the NYS Historical Landmark sign: "Home of Asa Douglas, First settler of Stephentown on his grant of land, 1000 acres received 1762 from General Court of Massachusetts for services in early wars." Part of the Douglas lands were in Hancock, Mass., and part in Stephentown. For a history of the family, see "The History of Rensselaer County", Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1880, specifically the chapter, The History of Stephentown. Asa, born in Plainfield, Connecticut, 11 December 1715, was a Whig, and led a company of thirty "Silver Grays" at the battle of Bennington on 16 August 1777. Disguised as an old farmer looking for his lost cows, he acted as a spy at the siege of Ticonderoga. Patricia Van Wagenen Harrison

    1. [Rensselaer] census info
    2. Hello, I realize Rensselaer Co was not formed till 1791 from Albany Co, however I have a record that has an ancestor born in Troy, NY in 1775. What township is Troy in? What census ward would Troy have been in in 1780 and 1790? I'm trying to find my ancestors in the 1780 and 1790 census but I'm not sure what part of Albany Co Troy was called? Any help appreciated? Also, can anyone help with a look up for these census' for me? Thanks Lisa Woodward Freeport, Illinois wlwoodward@juno.com
