Hello all! On my lunch today I am going to my local LDS and I want to request 2 Troy city directories. I have never been there (LDS)and I want to do this with the least amount of confusion ( I only have 1 hour for lunch). Do I just walk in and tell them that I want to order the 1842 and 1848 city directories for Troy? Do I have to do the leg work and go through catalogs or computer files to find out what exactly I am needing? Will I pay for this today or when it comes in? Thank you in advance. Patti
Hello List, Questions to Pat and Marie, Is there a list of church member? Is there a list of revolutionary soldiers that fought with Rensselear? Is there a list of men who put in for land through revolutionary war grants in this area? I am trying to find information about Levi Hicks born in Warren, R.I. abt. 1760-65 and married in Delaware Co., NewYork to Mary Waters. His grave has a 1776 marker and his headstone says he is a Captain. He died in Ohio in 1821. Also that virus was in another list I subscribe to. Do not open attachments!!! I don't believe in virus messages to genealogy lists but this one is a bad one and it seems many of you have received the infected message and haven't heard about it. DO NOT OPEN THAT ATTACHMENT! Delete the message. This website explains it... http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/w32.badtrans.13312@mm.html Here's a link for free virus software www.grisoft.com and a free firewall www.zonealarm.com . I haven't tried it but one of the listmanagers said it found an infected file by this virus on her system. Good luck! Vivian, South Bend, IN
Hi all, I just wanted you to know I will be off list for about a week because tomorrow I embark on my journey to Ireland where I will be for the month of May. When I get there I will resub with a different address, probably: nymets@indigo.ie I have signed up with them but can't work it completely out, until I get to Ireland. In the meantime, if you need to unsub or change your service from L to D or from D to L, go to http://lists.rootsweb.com Find the list and you will be able to sub, and unsub on that site. A warning: there is a nasty email virus going around as an attachment, (yes, again). Don't open attachments unless the person actually tells you it is coming and what is in it. I have been getting these bad guys at a rate of two or three a day for the past two weeks because many have my email address in their address book. I don't open them, so I don't have the virus but many of you do.... Keep cool, talk to you all soon. Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Mary, It sounds to me like it could be Copake in Columbia Co., which is 39 miles to the southeast on my map. Columbia Co. is the adjoining county to the south. The LDS Church was formed in 1830 in Seneca Co., NY. Maybe that will help narrow things down a bit.
Hi Dave, The only .pif (program information file) files I've ever seen are in Windows. They can be edited, Windows comes with a pif editor, but usually they're not destructive. Not sure if this is the same type of file you got, haven't seen the virus personally, but that's OK with me. :) Roni
Since we have such knowledgable people on this list, I'd now enjoy a history lesson on the difference in the seventh day baptists, seventh day adventists and the latter day saints religious groups. I've been trying to figure out which of these my ancestors are. I know the name I'm researching(Whipple) is known to be LDS but one record I found was in a BAptist church in Albany. I'm confused! Were they loyal to there religion or is it true that they went to the most convenient church. THanks liz PS. Enjoyed all the migration accounts...my relatives were from RI originally!

Some people on the list have received an email virus from "Valued Acer Customer". This is a new virus that is very tricky. When someone tries to open the attachment, if they have Microsoft Outlook, the virus scans all the mail they have saved, and finds messages that have not been read. It then extracts a portion of the mail message, and constructs a response like this: 'Mark Dionne' wrote: ==== (about 10 lines of the original mail message} > Take a look to the attachment. and appends the virus payload as an attachment named Sorry_About_Yesterday.DOC.pif or Pics.ZIP.scr or perhaps other names. The Subject in the mail is also constructed based on the original mail, so that mine was: Re: [NYRENSSE] Re: Divorces in NY The bottom line is that a whole bunch of people get email messages that appear to be replies to their own previous messages, and are not suspicious that a virus may be attached. I don't know if this virus does any additional harm. I suspect it is the MTX virus, which is very harmful. See: http://www.pchell.com/virus/mtx.shtml =========================================================== NEVER execute attachments that end in .scr, .pif or .exe!!! ===========================================================
To Barbara and all other folks on these lists, In reference to your checking with "valued acer customer' and his attachment concerning something you sumitted a long time ago....I also received this same email from "valued acer customer" from the Wyoming Co. NY list regarding an article that I posted last year. I also did not open the attachment for fear of a virus because of non identification. I also emailed this person back stating this fact and asked for identification and the contents of the attachment to be printed in the body of the email. I have heard nothing back. Probably if anyone receives this attachment it is wise just to delete it completely from your computer without opening it. Something stinks in the onion patch I think!! I got a similar message from this address. I checked out www.gfn.org and it's a non-profit ISP based in Flint MI. It just looks to me like someone on that server has a virus. I did try to open the attachment but couldn't. Since my machine is Macintosh it may be impossible. (which is just as well). I don't know what software creates a file with a .pif extension in the name, do you? David See Hudson Valley Sees http://pages.preferred.com/~dsee/genie.html
Hi, Wondering if anyone has any information on Elizabeth Van Rensselaer, born April 14, 1816, died March 20, 1890. She was the wife of John B. Klinck. I have records saying that she and John are buried in Boonville in the Joslin Cemetary. I believe they are the parents of George Klinck, who would be my great great grandfather. Their other children, according to the census were Stephen and Joanna (Johanna?) I found them listed in the 1860 Onondaga County census in the first ward, Syracuse. I'm looking for any info on John and Elizabeth, their children, their parents, etc. Anything would be great. I'm posting to Rensselaer County list because I wonder if maybe Elizabeth's family were originally from that county. Thanks, Georgiana
Pat sent me the following email and gave permission for me to forward it to the list with this statement: "I have no objection, however I do not want to start any debate between my opinion and Prof O'Dell, whom I feel answered in his own opinion of what he honestly felt happened. We do not all agree on these matters and yet there is merit in all of our opinions. If you think that this will not result in any major problem go ahead. Just that I do respect his opinion even though I do not totally agree with it. I just wanted to share what I felt was a different opinion of what happened. Sincerely, Pat" [I know that since I posted the answer to questions asked at the meeting held on April 20 that it seems logical to reply to me, but it would be much more useful, if anyone adding information would post directly to the list so everyone can get the benefit of the ideas of others. I think all viewpoints are welcome. Marie] This is Pat's email: Subj: Re: [Rensselaer] Rhode Island Families to Rensselaer County Date: 01-04-24 10:14:49 EDT From: PNUTREG@cs.com To: MHoff12140 Hi Marie Although some of Prof O'Dell's remarks could be of merit, I do not wholly agree with them. My Ancestor's fought in the Rev War with Van Rensselaer (and their Siblings) and lived in Rensselaer County since 1776 and of course it was Albany County NY at that time. (They came from RI). They also became constituent members of the Berlin NY Church. They purchased (did not rent Land) their farms and settled in the Berlin Area. Other family members had settled in the Dutchess County Area and later migrated to Rensselaer County. Also, many additional families moved there after the Rev. War. I think that as America was developing and new Lands because available it was a natural instinct for them to start migrating to new lands. There was also Rev War Land Grants that many were eligible for. After all their forefathers had come from the UK before them and migration was in their blood. Religious Groups did migrate together and so did families, although the entire family did not always come. In many cases you will find some remained behind. The Seventh Day Baptist which is a Sabbatarian Church started in Newport RI in 1671 and many of my Ancestral Families were Members and my heritage goes back to Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper Hubbard the founders through their daughter Ruth who married a Burdick. The next church being in the Hopkinson Area of Westerly RI where there is still a Church today. In 1802 they established a missionary group to spread the word of the gospel and that was the reason for the big movement at that time into NYS. They also moved into Mystic CT. In 1821 - 1828 they established a missionary magazine at that time and formed even a more aggressive movement to spread the gospel. Thus began the westward movement into Western NYS, PA and Virginia and onward West. Many of my other Ancestral lines were Pastors, Deacons and Founders of the Church throughout RI, CT and NYS and than on Westward. I have been to a number of the Churches that still exist in NYS where I used to live and I am trying to put together the Congregation and Cemetery of an Abandoned Site in Upstate NY. My 2 X Gt Grandfather was a founder, along with his Parents, Brothers and Sisters and his brother in law who was the First Pastor formed this particular one that I am working on. But I have visited almost all the sites in NY and their cemeteries or burial grounds. In all my reading and researching I was never under the impression nor have I seen any documentation to indicate that they were not welcome in RI.(Where they still have a church today). Only that the younger Generation spread their religious beliefs as they moved in hopes of spreading the words through their missionaries and enlarging the church. Most of the people in this movement were the younger people and if you look at the movement and migration you can easily see why some of the older church locations dissolved as the older people died and the younger people had moved on. . This is the oldest Sabbatarian Church in the US starting in 1671 in RI and although many people are not aware of it they do have about 70 Churches in No America and are in 20 additional countries. They were in existence before the Seventh Day Adventist, which by the way was started by a former Seventh Day Baptist by the name of Mr Oakes. This occurring about 200 years after the SDB Church was established in America. Well enough of bending your ears, but I thought that you should look at another view point. One of my Ancestors Benjamin Greene of RI married an Anna Sweet as his 2nd wife and she was a widow. Pat

Erick and List Members: Here's another response that I got along the same lines as David O'Dell's which I got permission to forward to the list. It also adds another factor, the Rhode Island economy after the war. Subj: Re: [Rensselaer] Rhode Island Families to Rensselaer County Date: 01-04-23 17:06:06 EDT From: tseanc@att.net To: MHoff12140@aol.com I had heard that the reason so many Rhode Islanders came to Rense. County was due to active advertisement by the Patroon Van Rensselaer to seek tenants for his land combined with general economic depression that occurred in Rhode Island after the Revolutionary War.
Erick and List: I got this email from David O'Dell who has given his permission for me to forward it to the list. It makes a lot of sense to me and while the Revolutionary War soldiers who came back to this area may account for some of the settlement of Rhode Islanders in the Taconic Valley, this should be seriously considered. Subj: Rhode Islanders Who Came To Rensselaer County Date: 01-04-23 14:16:05 EDT From: eastwood@frontiernet.net (David E.P. O'Dell) To: MHoff12140@aol.com Dear Marie, Your Sunday discussion about all of the Rhode Islanders who settled in Rensselaer County just caught my attention. While some of settlers may have come because they saw the locale during the Revolutionary War, there were other more specific reasons, as well. The Patroon Stephen Van Rensselaer and some of his people went around Rhode Island praising the merits of his estate, and encouraging families to relocate to New York. 'They could have far more land than they had in Rhode Island,' he told them. 'All they had to do is clear the forest and pay him rent on the land they cleared.' The struggle inherent in paying that rent, year after year, never really dawned on them at the time. Eventually, it escalated into the 'Anti-Rent War' of the early 1800's, which in parts of the Hudson Valley actually resembled guerilla warfare, complete with killings and burning farms. The other (but now generally forgotten) reason for migration from Rhode Island involved dozens of families representing the Seventh Day Baptist (SDB) Church. They wanted a settlement where they could observe the Sabbath on Saturday, without harassment by members of other churches. (Rhode Island was not as tolerant as its historians make out.) The SDB's came after the war, and Mr. Sweet's family was part of that group, along with my own family and countless others. As a matter of fact, there's still an active Seventh Day Baptist Church in the village of Berlin. You'll find detailed accounts of both of these great events in any comprehensive historical study of the founding of the state. Almost every public library has 'A History of New York State' by David M. Ellis et al (Cornell University Press, 1967). Thank you for exploring the topic on the Internet, because it's certainly an important one to many, many New Yorkers. Cordially, Prof. David E.P. Good report on Rensselaer County SIG of Capital District Genealogical Society Meeting. I am new to NYRENNSE-L@rootsweb.com. I am looking for more information about the following two Philip Links: (1) Philip Link b. Columbia County, NY about 1811: children Sylvester, Chesterman, Ann; widower at time of 1855 census; deceased wife-Edith Rawlins. Philip eventually lived in Rensselaer County; remarried (?) - possibly Almira Kilmer; other children possibly Calvin, William, Jane. Philip is my gggrandfather on the male side of the family. (2) Philip Link, son of Peter Link (Rensselaer County). Philip's son Martin, my gggrandfather on the female side of the family was the natural child of Betsy Thompson. (This sounds confusing, but Chesterman Link (Philip Link from Columbia County's son) married Hannah E. Link (Philip Link from Rensselaer County's granddaughter.) I believe Philip married and had other children: Lyman, Morgan, Peter, Mariah (?). Philip died in Chautauqua County. Philip had brothers (also Peter's sons) Peter, Andrew, and Stephen. I also am looking for information on any of these Links. Is there a way to get in touch with Clare and Don Radz? I think he must be the Radz who was a neighbor of ours on Troy-Averill Park Road, NY Route 66, when I was growing up. Also his dad was a good friend of my dad's. Would like to get in touch with him. Thanks for any information. Beverly
