    3. Hello, This sounds like the same film series (there are 3 that I know of) that can be found through the LDS search for Burial [Records] of Mt. Ida Cemetary. A while back I was in the same dilemma, and one person told me of this film that I had seen many times in my searches. However, due to the lack of a more encompassing name (the films contain almost all burials recorded in Troy regardless of religion/cemetary) I did not think to check these out. If you want to see these, write me back and I will get you the film numbers and proper names when I can look them up at home. 1. [Rensselaer] Death Certs for Troy
    2. Lin
    3. Patti and others, have I got good news for you!! First, the bad news: Official death certificates didn't begin until 1881 in NY state, so if you wrote to the state of NY or to a county or town in NY asking for them, they wouldn't be able to help, and they might or might not write back to tell you so. However, you are in luck in that the people you are looking for lived in Troy and may have died there. Here is what I highly recommend that you do: Find your nearest LDS Church's Family History Centre, and through it order this microfilm: LDS Microfilm 1434103: "Book of Records, Names Interments &c. &c., Troy March 1st 1833, S. E. Gibbs Superintendent". This is a burial log for Troy, Rensselaer Co NY. These burial records run for many decades starting in 1833. They have THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of names, all in a great ledger. Some eras the record keeper was quite meticulous, while in other eras the clerks were a bit slap-dash. At the very least, though, you can find the decedent's name, the date of death, where he or she was buried and age at death -- and usually marital status. Many of the entries also give cause of death, exact place of death (street address), place of birth, names of parents, name of informant, place of residence, attending physician, how long the decedent had been ill and so forth. It is a WONDERFUL resource, and yet most people don't even know about it. Good luck! Lin P. S. A rather alarmingly large number of babies died from "teething" in the 19th century, these records show. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% >At 09:03 09/05/2001 -0400, Patti Smith <PSmith@fmd-inc.com> wrote: >I can not locate my ancestor's after the birth of their 2 children in Troy, >NY (1842 and 1848 are the birth years). 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The original question was sent to both the Albany and Rensselaer lists. Sunday, I responded only to the Albany list. Since the question about Kinderhook's location is still on this list, I am now sending part of my earlier response. It contains links to gazetteers that I use frequently. Cliff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kinderhook has been in northern Columbia Co. since 1786 when that county was cut from Albany Co. Here is a great gazetteer for modern NY. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/nytwp.htm The next gazetteer shows place that changed their names in NY. However, many places are missing. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/places/names.htm Here is a map of NY counties and a list of counties with their dates of formation and from what county they were taken. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/county.htm All of these are links from my website. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Cliff

    3. I can not locate my ancestor's after the birth of their 2 children in Troy, NY (1842 and 1848 are the birth years). Can I write the clerk of the courts for Rensselaer County and ask if they have death certificates on the parents? I am wondering if they died shortly after the birth of the children. I haven't found a church yet that has records of any of the family members. Did Rensselaer County/New York keep death records that early? Can I ask for a search for the years 1848 through say.....1855 or 1860? I am at the proverbial "brick wall". Thanks, Patti

    1. [Rensselaer] LAYTON/SMOCK
    2. Hi all, I'm hoping someone on this list has access to resources and/or is connected to this family. We are trying to ascertain the parentage of David LAYTON, husband of Maria (h) SMOCK. The following represents what we think we know: David Layton (parent UNKNOWN Layton) was born Abt. 1740 in Three Mile Run, Somerset, NJ. Lived in Hoosick, NY-1790 David married Maria Smock on Abt. 1762 in NJ. Maria (parents Jan Matthyse Smock and Leah Fonteyn) was born Abt. 1746 in Raritan (Somerville) Somerset, NJ. She died Jul 1804 in Raritan (Somerville) Somerset, NJ. David Layton and Maria Smock had the following children: 1. Thomas Layton was born 13 Aug 1763 in NJ. 2. Leah Layton was born 17 Jan 1765 in Otsego, NY(?). She died Abt. 1845 in Lima, Otsego, NY. 3. Lydia Layton was born 23 Oct 1767 in NJ. 4. John Layton was born 30 Jun 1768 in NJ. 5. Anna Layton was born 12 May 1770 in NJ?. She died 10 Jan 1835 in Richfield Springs, Otsego, NY. 6. Mary Layton was born 6 Jul 1772 in NJ. 7. David Layton. 8. David Layton was born 17 Jan 1774 in NJ. 9. Joseph Layton was born 26 Feb 1774 in Somerset Co., NJ. He died 12 Jun 1859 in Richfield Springs, Otsego, NY. Rumor has it that David LAYTON served in the New York militia during the Revolutionary War. Sources have not confirmed this fact. One source states that the Battle Of Bennington was fought on the family farm in Hoosick, NY but land ownership records do not bear this out. If the above names are an indication, parents namesd may have been Thomas and Lydia LAYTON. Any leads appreciated. Sincerely, Deb Christianson Madison, Wisconsin

    1. [Rensselaer] Prevent Viruses - 2 easy methods you haven't heard of before
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. There are two simple steps you can take to protect yourself against viruses. I have never seen them discussed on any mail list, or elsewhere. One is to set your antivirus program to check incoming email attachments. You thought yours did it automatically? Well think again. Norton Antivirus 2000 on Dell computers does not. You have to choose the option yourself. If you don't, the viruses are welcomed by your computer. What must Norton be thinking of? Why do they think we buy their antivirus? Don't they know that most of us receive our viruses from email attachments? Dell doesn't help out either. They just let it stay the way they get it, and then blame Norton. It took me many months to find the option on my own, but only after wrestling many times with virurses. I wrote a webpage today that gives specific directions for choosing this option. I also wrote about an email from which I received a virus even though it had NO visible attachment (the only one I ever received like it). And I give a possible second method of preventing many viruses (probably including the email without the attachment). The method was advised by a very knowledgeable friend who for many years has been in charge of computers and software for a large organization. I give specific instructions on how to choose this option with Netscape and Internet Explorer. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Aid/AID-VirusProtect.htm My apologies to those people who do not like to see virus warnings, etc. on a genealogy mail list. However, I could not remain silent any longer about something that I know that many of you can do to quickly protect yourself from incoming viruses. I keep hearing about the need to be cautious about opening attachments. But, I have never heard that your antivirus should protect you even if you did open one that contained a virus. Well, it is supposed to, but we have not been told that before. And most of don't know that we have to make a conscious choice to have an antivirus protect us against viruses in email attachments, because it won't do it otherwise. I don't want to start a discussion of this subject on the mail list. If you have comments, you may want to direct them to me privately. If you have questions, I'm sorry, but I know very little about viruses and I don't know anything about software that isn't mentioned on my webpage. I'm trying to help, but I'm no expert. Cliff
