While I was in Ireland two people from this list emailed me on my Indigo account about volunteering to transcribe the Troy 1880 census. We are back on task and currently transcribing the 3rd ward. I am sorry but I thought I had forwarded the volunteers messages to my pacbell email and when I got home, there were not there. So, if you volunteered and I haven't gotten back to you, please email me again. Sorry. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/troy/
Does anyone know what the "Nail Factory" was? In reviewing the Troy Book of Internments for the 1860's, I found that the "place of death" listed for a number of people was "Nail Factory". Additionally, LDS has films of the "Nail Factory Cemetery Records 1850-1884". Thanks. Susan
The 2001 revision of my Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources includes updated information for 28 facilities in the NY counties of Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Schenectady and Montgomery. I have added email addresses for those places that had them. Compared with the 2000 version, renovations have begun at some locations and affect the hours of operation. Some are closed for a couple of weeks this summer. One is closed for about 2 months. One moved to a new address and changed its phone number at the same time. If you plan to visit Albany or the counties mentioned above, you would benefit from taking a look at the Guide. Feel free to run off a copy to take along on your trip. Printing instructions for Netscape users (something similar might work in Internet Explorer): Click on File, then Save As. Give it a name such as Guide, but change the extension from .htm to .doc which will allow you to open it in Word. Notice the directory in which you are saving it. Open Word and find that directory. Open the file and it should look pretty good (at least mine did). It took up 16 pages of text. You may find a better way of doing it. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Guide.htm Cliff

I am trying to research the ancestry of Margaret Quackenbush and Samuel G. Woods. They were married in Troy on August 5, 1827 by a Rev. Mr. Howard. Does anyone know to what church Rev. Breaking news on the Nolan puzzle. I now know that Mary Ann Nolan's father was indeed Patrick Nolan and her mother was Ellen Ryan Nolan, both from Ireland, and presumably very newly arrived in Schaghticoke when Mary Ann was born on April 1, 1854. Any assistance in looking up this family is greatly appreciated. Stephanie ----Original Message------ Thanks for answering my distress call! I'm researching Mary Ann Nolan born 4/1/1854. The birth certificate of her first child James, born in Aurora Illinois in 1878 states that Mary Ann was born in Sceaticook New York (which is Schaghticoke). Mary Ann died in Illinois in 1934. I have not been able to figure out yet where she married Michael Corrigan though for now I assume it was Illinois as she married in 1877, one year before her first child was born. Mary Ann's death certificate states her father's name was Patrick Nolan from Ireland. The information was given by one of her sons. The 1855 Rensselaer Census has a Patrick Noland age 35, wife Mary age 30, a child Hannah 6, a son James 4, and a son Patrick 2, but does not mention a daughter who would be about 1. So I am stuck. ANY help is appreciated. Stephanie, stumped in Austria

Hello All, I think I may have found my ggggrandfather in the 1847-48 and 1860 Troy city directories! If someone has access to the Troy 1850 census or 1860 census, I would really appreciate it if SKS could see if they find him and his family. (Rensselaer County) 1850 James Gray, house north second-street alley below Jacob. 1860-NOT QUITE SURE WHICH ONE OF THESE COULD BE HIM. James Gray, house Walnut, near Marshall James Gray, house 265 Congress Thanks so much, Patti Smith Orlando, Fl PS. I will be going back to the FHC again this Thursday or Friday if anyone had any city directory requests. Troy Directories for 1842-43, 1847-48 and I just found today, the Troy directory for 1860 (For some reason there was one page of microfiche that had the Lansingburg directory in with it as well)

Hi Listers, I need some guidance on obtaining birth information on an ancestor who was born 4/1/1854. Are there any known sources of birth information available? Birth certificates aren't available of course, but would contain the information I need (father, mother names, etc...). I'm searching the 1855 Census but don't see an obvious match. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance, Stephanie, stuck in Austria
http://arrangeonline.com/obituary/search.asp Sorry about that, I tried to copy and paste it, but I guess I did something wrong. Georgiana
I received this information from an Arkansas mailing list. I am forwarding to the New York lists because it will give you vital information from an obituary. I'm not sure just how far back the records go, but I did find quite a few family members back as far as the mid 60's. Hopefully it will help some of you also. Many thanks to Kathy on the AFHA Mailing List. Good Luck, Georgiana

Hi, First I must say I thought that NYS had stopped answering mail requests. But if they are still doing that I'll tell you that a couple of years ago i wrote for some and it took 6 months. On a visit last year I ordered some and it took 1 week. I imagne it because I did all the research all they had to do was make the copies. don't give up hope. I used to have their phone number if i can find it i'll post it to you. Good Luck Ruth originally from Rensselaer County and now soaking up the sun in Florida
Hi All, Just curious to know from those of you who've requested vital stat. records from the NYS Dept. of Health. I originally intended to deal with Troy's Dept. of Vital Stats., but the forms they sent to me were addressed to NYSDOH in Albany. I filled out and paid for information on two people 3 months ago, and realized today that I have not received correspondence yet. I expected to wait quite a while, but how do I know if they did not find the requested information? Will they inform me? How long have others waited? Thanks, Brooke
Can anyone lookup WILLIAM JOSEPH LEONARD in the Troy City directory? I know the family lived in Rensselaer but have been unable to locate them. He died in 1895 at a very young age (about 35 years old) He had a wife MARY LYNCH who died in 1890. they had one child MARY ANN "MAE" LEONARD.
The 1855 Town of Clinton (now Town of East Greenbush) Agricultural Census is online. My thanks to Joe Yakel for his efforts in preparing this Rensselaer Co. census for computer. Janet Derbyshire published this data in book form in 1985 along with the regular Town of Clinton census. She has graciously given me permission to post the data on my website. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Census/CEN-ClintonAg-1855.htm Joe has also prepared a companion file which shows the 35 questions that farmers were asked. You can reach that from the link above. Cliff http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/

Hello all, Is anyone researching the Van Buskirk family who lived in Troy,NY in the mid-1800s? I am researching LOVETT. I located my g.g.g.grandfather's family, Ulysses,38, Georgiana, 29, James W.,11, Mary A. ,9and Charles G, 2.and several members of his family in the 1850 NY Rensselaer Co Census for the City of Troy's Third Ward. According to that census, there were two other people living in the Lovett home at that time. Their names were: VAN BUSKIRK William male age 23y born NY moulder married within year VAN BUSKIRK Mary J. female age 20y born NY married within year. The census said the Van Buskirks were newlyweds, having been married in that same year of 1850. Does anyone know what the Van Buskirk's connection was to the Lovetts? Was one of them a sibling of Georgiana? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jackie
