    1. [Rensselaer] 1880 Troy census-8th ward
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Well, in getting the 7th ward ready for transcription, I realized that I left out 38 pages of the 8th ward which was completed before my trip to Ireland in May. I guess in the excitement of getting ready for the trip, I cut corners!! Then to make things even worse, when I looked at the 8th ward page on my site (URL below my name, click on New York State, Troy, Census) I noticed I had only put up A through H surnames from what we had transcribed. Soooo, I just put up K thru Z but remember it is a partial ward, even though it has 2,323 individuals listed. Sorry if it cause any inconvenience or confusion. FYI: We are currently finishing up the 4th ward and when that is complete, we will complete the 8th ward before going on the the 7th ward. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. [Rensselaer] 1845 Rensselaer County Census
    2. Patti Smith
    3. Would SKS who might have access to the 1845 Rensslaer and/or Albany county-NY State census please see if they can find my ancestors. I know they were there in 1842 (a son was born in Troy) and their last son was born in 1848 but I can't find them in the 1850 census. Possibly they died during an epidemic? I am trying to locate: In Troy or West Troy in (Albany county) William and/or Edward Gray (I have seen him referenced both ways) Ellen/Eleanor/Elizabeth Gray (wife-referenced 3 different ways as well) James/John (son) age 6 Thank you! 1. [Rensselaer] City Directories & Passports
    2. Hello, I have been tracking allied relatives through the Troy City Directories and have run across an entry that I've never seen before. Emil(father) and Martha(daughter) both lived in Watervliet(Albany Co) and worked in Troy, NY(Renss Co.). I found them through most of the 1890's. Then in 1898, after Emil's name it say "removed from city". I am assuming that means that he left the area as I have check Cohoes, Green Island, Watertown, Landsburgh, etc. The in the 1899 Troy Directory, after Matha's name it says "removed to Hamburg, Germany." Am I correct in my assumption that they both left because of the word "removed"?? I checked the 1892 Albany Co census and both are listed as "citizen." I also checked the 1900 NYS soundex to see if I could find either of them - they weren't listed. Because both are listed as citizens (both were born in Germany) - Would they need a passport to leave the country? If so, where would I look to find their passport applications? Thank You, Sue Dsjk2716@aol.com

    3. In uploading all the the 3rd ward to my site, I noticed the link to the 1st ward was not on the Troy page. Since I am constantly playing with the pages on my site, I inadvertently eliminated it and didn't realize it. So if you go to the url below my name, click on New York, Troy, Census, you will find both the 1st ward and the 3rd ward completely on line. Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. [Rensselaer] Help with Ancient Disease name
    2. Dave And Kathy Becker
    3. Hi fellow listers, I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on two diseases that I have found mentioned in letters I have, dating the 1840's. One fellow mentions that he has had bouts of Cointer fever, and another mentions Tiler grip. Having a sense of wanting to know the ailments along with the good news of my ancestors, I just have to know what they suffered from. I also have a letter where disease of the lungs was mentioned to the point where the fellow went into fits and coughed up blood. Would this be pneumonia...he did recouperate with the help of a N.Y. doctor. Any help would be appreciated. PS...I went onto a search engine and a few sites listed under "ancient diseases" and didn't find answers to my queries. 1. [Rensselaer] S.E.Gibbs
    2. Hi all, Found this notation in the archives of this list: <<"Book of Records, Names Interments &c. &c., Troy March 1st 1833, S. E. Gibbs Superintendent". This is a burial log for Troy, Rensselaer Co NY. >> Can anyone identify this S.E. Gibbs? Anyone know his full name or his family? My ancestor, Theodore Gibbs born 1806 was later a Clerk of Court--like father, like son? Could the "S" be for Sylvester--Theo's son's name? Grasping at straws here, but it's a clue! Worth checking out, I think... If anyone can ID this S.E. Gibbs, I'd appreciate the help! thanks, Cyndi in Baltimore

    1. [Rensselaer] Theodore H Gibbs b. Rensselaer NY ca 1806
    2. Hi all, Haven't posted this mystery man in a while... maybe someone new has a clue? Theodore Gibbs b. NY (Rensselaer?) 7/3/1806, m. Nancy Wood (from Mass.) 10/7/1824 in NY or MA, d. 5/1/1886 Lawrence Co, TN. He was a Clerk of Court and is listed on the Rensselaer Census in 1830. Children were: Joseph Sylvester Gibbs b. 1832 NY (my ancestor) Jessie G Susan E Delia M. Abijah B. Mary A Emeline A Gilbert C Henry C John R Millard Fillmore Samantha W. In TN, the Gibbs connect with the Flippos and many other Lawrence Co families (I have a book of descendants), and they are mostly buried at Bumpass Cemetery in Lawrenceburg...but I can't fill in the gaps or find Theo's parents... With all these kids, there must be some info out there on Theodore and company! Can anyone verify his birth in NY? Or find his marriage? Are there other census, deed, tax, church, obit, etc records out there? Can anyone shed any light on his wife, Nancy Wood? Any help appreciated! Cyndi in Baltimore

    1. [Rensselaer] question on census
    2. Rebecca S
    3. I've been using the 1920 census on ancestry.com, and have been fairly sucessful so far.. but now I'm sorta stuck. I know I have family in the Lansingburg/Pleasantdale/Spiegletown area, but don't know what district the cities would fall into. All of the Troy ward descriptions are all for the city of Troy and South Troy. Anyone know where I should look? 1. [Rensselaer] 1880 Troy census update
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Well, in case anyone was wondering, even with summer upon us, we are still working diligently on completing the transcription project of the 1880 Federal Census for the city of Troy. We have just recently completed the 3rd ward which consists of another 2575 people, 330 more dwellings and 475 families. I have started putting it on line starting with the Troy Hospital which was located at 8th Street at Fulton Street. You can find it at the URL below my name, clicking on New York and then Troy. When you click on the census page for the first time, give it time to snap in. Sometimes, your browser will show, "document done" but you won't have the table. Just give it a while, it will come in. For your information, we are almost done with the 4th ward, have some of the 10th ward completed and that will only leave the 7th and 13th wards to do to complete the town. Once the town is complete we also have some of the outlining towns, like Lansingburg, Greenbush, Schaghticoke, etc. to complete. When they are all done, I intend to put all of them in one file, rather than in wards to make it easier to search. Let us know if you find a connection. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    2. Patti Smith
    3. Hello Listers, If I think my ancestors lived in West Troy in 1850, would I look for them in a Troy census or a Watervliet census? If it is Troy, at what point/year is West Troy referenced as Watervliet? Thanks and I hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th! Patti

    1. [Rensselaer] Will Abstracts for the Town of Kinderhook, Columbia Co., NY
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have just posted 25 will abstracts for the Town of Kinderhook, Columbia Co., NY (1708-1786). All were proved in New York City at a time before a Surrogate's Court was established in each county in 1787. New Amsterdam / New York City was the capitol of New York Province/State until the capitol moved to Albany in 1797. [NYC even became the first capitol of the United States in 1789, but only remained so for a year. In 1790, the capitol moved to Philadelphia.]. Apparently, if a will had a value over 50 pounds, it had to be proved by the provincial government. That government had its seat in New York City. When NY became a state in 1777, the capitol did not change until 1797 when it moved to Albany. Agnes Cloninger typed the will abstracts, and I created the index of 328 names that were in the wills. Since I was born in the Town of Kinderhook, this project has been very special for me. My thanks to Agnes for her tireless efforts in this project that will increase our online knowledge of Columbia Co. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Wills/Wills-Kinder.htm Cliff http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/

    3. Below, there is a list of questions which appear on a Social Security application. Pat Connors supplied this list to the Rennselaer Co., NY mailing list in March. On July 1, the price of a photocopy of the original application is going up from $7 to $27. name: first, middle, last address: street, city, state business name/employer address of busines/employer age at last birthday date of birth place of birth father's name, regardless of whether living or dead mother's name, regardless of whether living or dead sex color give date you became an employee have your filled out a card like this before if yes, enter place and date or original filing and reason for filing again today's date signature To search the SS Index to see if there is anyone that interests you, click on the URL for the RootsWeb index. http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi If you find a name that interests you, you can click on "SS-5 Letter" and RootsWeb generates the letter for you. That's about as easy as it gets. If you want to beat the price increase, your letter must be postmarked by Saturday June 30. You don't have much time. If you want information from the Social Security Administration, click here: http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm Here is an alternate index.
