Patti, Using http://www.google.com I put in "william gray" ireland ellen . The quotes mean that the william gray must occur exactly in that order. Otherwise you get too many hits of something like William Smith and Rebecca Gray (where the words appear but in the wrong people). In Mt. Albion Cemetery, Town of Albion, Orleans County, New York I found a William Gray and Ellen Gray married to each other and both born in Ireland. Also buried there were son George b. 1828, son William b. 1832, son John b. 1838, and dau. Ella b 1842. You have James b. 1842 and Thomas b. 1848. This William and Ellen were in the US by 1835 when 2-3 year old son William was buried in this cemetery. Father William was buried in the cemetery in 1867 and Ellen was buried in 1871. This suggests that they lived in the area for the entire time, but they could have moved to Troy for a few years and then returned to the Albion area. Or sons James and Thomas lived in Troy at some point in their adult lives (plenty of work there) but may not have been born there. I suggest to you the possibility that William and Ellen came to the US with a younger brother Everett and his wife Elizabeth. I suggest also that William's mother (possibly Sarah Everett) came with them and that William's father (possibly Jonas Gray) may have died back in Ireland because he is mentioned in these records but is not buried in the cemetery (or at least a stone wasn't found). There are 29 Grays buried here. The lot numbers are given so you can figure out family groups although "mother" Sarah seems to have gotten buried in whatever space was available. I suggest that you look up the 1850 or 1855 Town of Albion census to confirm the presence of William and Ellen, and then see if James and Thomas are present as well. 1855 will give you better information (including ages, as I recall), and the two boys would still be part of the family. The google search that I did came up with 387 hits. You might investigate the others as well. You could also try without the ireland although this will give you more hits than you could wish for. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorlean/mtalbg3.htm The William and Ellen above may not be the right people, but it sounds very promising to me. Let me know what you think. Hello all, I really need some advice. I feel like I am close to giving up on my search. I really want to continue but I am at a loss as to where to find my ancestors. There are 2 people that are so hard to locate! I will state a few basic facts and if anyone can help with suggestions I would really appreciate it. I am trying to find William Gray and wife Ellen. Family history says they immigrated to NY from Ireland. I don't know either of their ages or birthdates, or anything other than their names and their children's info. They had 2 sons, James (b. 1842) and Thomas (b. 1848) in Troy, NY. I have both of their civil war records and learned nothing about the parents. (other than their names from 1 son's marriage and death cert. (maiden name unknown) I can not locate any of the above in the 1840 or 1850 census for Troy or surrounding areas. I have contacted several catholic churches in Troy and no one can find record of them. One church, St. Joseph's still has not written back after 2 letters and 1 phone call (going on 6 to 8 months now). Marriage and death certs give no information. 1 son died in a soldiers home in 1913 and the attending physician who filled out the death cert and he didn't fill out much information and what little he did was incorrect, such as birth place and age. (Could there possibly be another death cert, maybe one the county did?) He didn't die in the county he lived in all of his adult life. (in Illinois) 1 son states in the census' that his parents were born in Ireland. The other son always stated his parents were born in NY. If I were to contact the catholic church in Illinois where he had his children baptised at and also where his funeral was, what records would I ask for that might contain information about HIS parents? Can anyone give me some ideas as what I can do to find William and Ellen? Thanks in advance. Patti

Does anyone know if there is a published list of monument inscriptions for Schodack/s MOUNTAIN VIEW and HORIZON VIEW cemeteries? I need a couple of lookups. If these are not available by e-mail, any ideas as to who I should contact for this information? Help, please..........David Carr in Scarborough ON
Does anyone know what the current name of the (Lansingburgh) Village Cemetery (Catholic) is? Debby Masterson, CC Rensselaer Co., NY GenWeb
Hi Jenn, Funny you should write about this right now. I was just thinking that it's been 6 months +plus since I wrote to St. Peters for any McGough records they might have. Still haven't heard anything. I'm starting to give up myself! :-) Michelle McGoff Jenn Olmstead wrote: > My experience with St. Peters Church has been very frustrating. My experience with St. Peters Church has been very frustrating. They are extremely closed liped, I had to "sneak" in after several attempts to locate the secretary, the maid let me in out of pity after my 3rd trip. There is a map of the cemetery on the wall, I located the grave site myself and just left after waiting almost an hour. I've written up to 10 times for family info and they sent me info twice out of 10 requests. After hearing the excuse that they only had one researcher, I even volunteered to help do research for free! I was raised Catholic in North Troy and had several references, they didn't even respond to my offer, and from then on ignored my requests. I gave up. Good luck though, let me know if I can help! am trying to locate the graves of a Roman Catholic, French-Canadian family buried at Lansingburg. Is there anyone who could check to see if any have tombstones? Francois Renaud-Deslauriers, died 22 June 1883 and his wife Julia, who died in June 1885. They anglicized the surname to DELAIR. Would be interested in any other Delair buried at Lansingburgh. Thanks so much! Jackie in Texas
Regarding inquiry St. Peter's Cemetary Troy. I too would be interested in cemetary information/publication. The church address is 2310 Fifth Avenue, Troy, NY 12180. The tele # is 518-272-2750 and your contact is Denise. Good Luck. Linda Farrell
Recently, I found a gravestone in St. Peter Cemetery in Troy, NY, which appears to be that of my great great grandmother, Ellen Farmer. The stone has a few illegible spots, one of which obscures her place of birth. I was wondering if a comprehensive catalog of grave inscriptions from this cemetery had ever been published. I was hoping that an earlier transcription of the stone might reveal data that is now obscured by the erosion of the marble stone. Pethaps someone on the list has seen such a book. Thanks, Dennis Hughes
Well, I might just as well get in on the act - the Historical Society has the original records that the LDS Church filmed. The Surrogate office has the film of the probate pkg as well as separate film of just the wills - not all of the probate files on film included the wills. I can't recall exactly how far these go - at least up to 1881 and a little later. After that one has to go to the Surrogate. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Am searching for any documentation relating to Daniel Watkins b. abt. 1809 in Renssalaer County. He appears in Essex County NY on the 1840 census and lists birthplace and date as above. He married Jane Chamberlain in 1837.....she came into Washington Co. NY shortly after her birth in 1813. Don't know if they married before coming to Essex Co. Need parents of Daniel, date and place of marriage to Jane. Jane and her family came from Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH. There were several Watkins families in Cheshire County at that time also. Can anyone help?
Sure Lynn, I'd like to volunteer, but am half way across the country now. I'll be back later on in the year, though. If you or someone else can think of how those of us who are out of state can help, please let us know. Hadn't posted this for a while. thought it was time to try again. Posting to several lists due to localities and associated family names. Looking for information on the following Abbott family members: James M. ABBOTT - born in Mass - lived in Herkimer and Oneida Counties, lumberman and farmer, wife Melissa Nichols, born in Sand Lake, NY Looking for James' parents names, where he and Melissa are buried Have found info about James and Melissa in the censuses, but nothing giving his parents info. Melissa died in 1889, as did her son, James K. Was there an epidemic in Oneida County NY about that time? Louella ABBOTT - married George Harry Brown. She died in 1973 in Old Forge. Looking for information on her husband, her children, etc. she was the daughter of Edmund F. abbott and Lucy Traffarn. Louella and her parents are buried in the riverside Cemetary in the Town of Webb. Also looking forinformation on Louella's brothers, Harold and Lloyd, both born in Forestport NY. James K. ABBOTT - born May 1843, graduated from Albany Medical College, died in 1899 -wife's name was Jennie, and children Grace and Charles. May have had other children also. Looking for places buried, where he practiced, etc. son of James M. and Melissa Abbott Who did Grace and Charles marry? I have heard that Grace married an Ainsworth, but can find no further information. John W. ABBOTT - looking for any information on John. I would like to find his wife's name, if he had any children, and where buried, Son of James and Melissa James ABBOTT - possibly James Timothy or Timothy James, any info. Son of George N. and Carrie Abbott Wife's name was Viola ? Ruth Ella Abbott - married Hugh Jones, where buried, marriage date, etc. Daughter of George and Carrie Abbott Hugh and Ruth Ella had at least one daughter, Carol, who married a Curtis. Nina ABBOTT - buried in Forestport NY, died at age 3, looking for name of cemetary where buried. Charles ABBOTT - died at age 17, possibly born in Forestport, looking for place buried - Son of George and Carrie Abbott Ella Melissa Abbott, born 1863, married Joseph GARDNER in 1884 in Forestport, NY, died 1919 in Rochester, NY. Had children James, Grace, Ray and Charles. What happened to children? ANY information on these Abbott's would be a tremendous help. I have found many of these persons in census records for Oneida and herkimer Counties, and the Town of Webb Historical Society has been much help with Edmund Abbott, but I'm not having much luck with finding other records or information. Thank you, Georgiana
Cliff Lamere has pointed out my error in saying that the Rensselaer County Historical Society has early wills; they have the early probate packages. I know better; sorry if I misled anyone and thanks to Cliff for pointing out the error. Marie
Cyndi: The Rensselaer County Historical Society has possession of the early wills for Rensselaer County. LDS has filmed them. But, RCHS will photocopy all the papers for any will packet for a flat, very small, fee. I don't know if you can make the arrangements on line (they have a web page) or you would need to write to them at 57 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180 Marie

Perhaps those of us who are most interested in seeing the old section cleared should voice our concerns to the St. Joseph's Parish council and maybe volunteer our help for a weekend. I have a cousin who is involved at the parish. I can ask him what the best course of action would be. If anyone is interested, please email me off list. I can print out all the messages I receive and present them to my cousin as evidence of people's concern. Lynn
Does anyone see any hope of the old section of the cemetery ever being cleaned up? It is so overgrown, it probably hasn't been taken care of for 30-40 years.
Like Brooke, I was dismayed to see the number of toppled stones in St. Joseph's Cemetery. My understanding is that they had a wretched incident of vandalism on July 4th 2000 so it happened over a year ago. The headstone of one of my ancestors was knocked off its base and I will have to make arrangements to have it put upright. A few years back I had two family tombstones worked on and the caretaker at that time told me that the cemetery crew was not authorized to stand up any stones that had been knocked down unless contacted by a relative of the interred. I'm not sure this is still the policy. It would be a shame to blame the cemetery caretaker for the condition if "his hands are tied". Vandalism is a terribly senseless phenomenon and one I will never understand. Lynn
