    3. I have created a new web site from my database of 105,000+ individuals that includes several families and numerous entries that may be of interest to those with ancestry in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. There are individual pages for many families indexed on the surname page. The site includes pictures, maps and biographical info, as well as some general genealogy info and some good links. The site is searchable and includes a table of contents. It includes some area names. 1. [Rensselaer] Interesting Rootsweb Mailing list info
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Here are some urls that might help, if you are subbed to more than one mailing list. RootsWeb users can obtain forgotten passwords, user IDs, and information about subscribed mailing lists and GenConnect board posts here. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ The above site if very helpful. I have it sent to me so I can keep track which lists I am subbed to and which ones I am listowner of. When I went to Ireland in May, I switched servers so had to unsub and resub to all the lists. I took this list with me to Ireland to help me. Here is the site where you can unsub, sub and contact the listowner of all the genealogy lists of Rootsweb. Remember if you switch servers, you will need to resub with your new email address. Rootsweb will automatically drop your old address when the email sent to the old address bounces three times. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Please feel free to email me anytime you have a problem with the list. I prefer you do that off the mailing list, to me privately. Thanks for your continuing cooperation. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. [Rensselaer] Methodist-Episcopal Church
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have written a short history of the Methodist-Episcopal Church in America. There were plenty of these churches in Albany County and the surrounding region. The name of this church has been confusing to me since it combines the names of two major religions in the US. However, I learned that the word Episcopal simply means that bishops are part of the hierarchy of the church. Methodist-Episcopal was the first official name of the Methodist Church in this country. The church began as a lay movement of Methodist migrants, but John Wesley wouldn't send any ordained ministers from England until after the American Revolution. The church gained recognition in 1785. Two African branches separated due to racial mistreatment, and a large branch left because the church "would not grant representation to the laity or permit the election of presiding elders". Then, disagreement over the slavery issue broke the remaining church into northern and southern branches. In 1939, the three non-African branches re-united to form the Methodist Church. This summarizes some major events of the Methodist-Episcopal Church. To read a bit more, go to my brief article. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Ch/CH-MethEpisc-History.htm There, you will find links to much more extensive histories. Cliff

    3. Don't forget about the state census. They are available for 1855, 1865, & 1875 and give more info than the federal census. They also are available on microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. >You can find the film numbers at: http://www.familysearch.org >Go to Library, and then go to library catalog You can order the films and view them at your local Family History Center. familysearch.org has a page telling where to find the local Centers. 1. Re: [Rensselaer] Death Cert and Naturalization info
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Hi Patti, Civil records in New York started on or about 1888, a very few earlier. As the years go by, the records become more conclusive. Now it depends on what records you want, for death records, you need name and date of death, all other info is supplied. If you are looking for a place in Ireland, you may be disappointed. Most time only "Ireland" is noted as place of birth. If you know the place of birth, marriage or death, you should inquire in the city clerk's office. It is much quicker than state archives that can take up to a year. Have you considered census records. Back to 1850 will give family makeup. 1870 will tell you what country they were born in. 1900 will tell you their birth month, year and they year they emigrated to the US. We have much of the 1880 census on line for Troy at the URL under my name. Click on New York State, Troy, 1880 census. Naturalization records for County Rensselaer are on microfilm and can be viewed at you local LDS Family History Library. You can find the film numbers at: http://www.familysearch.org Go to Library, and then go to library catalog Good luck. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. [Rensselaer] Death Cert and Naturalization info
    2. Patti Smith
    3. Hello listers, Can anyone tell me when NY started keeping death records? Also, with limited information (and I mean limited!) can I obtain a death cert and/or naturalization record if I only know his name, his wife's name and 2 children's names and birthdates and birthplaces. Oral history says he and his wife immigrated from Ireland but I don't know where in Ireland. That's it. Would I be able to get anywhere with that? Thanks, Patti

    1. [Rensselaer] HARPLE, Troy, 1920
    2. Does anyone's research involve the children of James F. "Frank" Harple and his wife Wilhelmina "Minnie" Ratz Harple? I share a common ancestor with them through Minnie. In the 1920 Census Frank was 41, born in Maryland, and Minnie was 47, born in New York. They lived in a rented dwelling at 12 Douw Street in Troy. They had three sons and a daughter: Harold, 17; Wallace, 14; Morris, 9; and Irene, 6. I'd like to find some descendants. Marie

    1. [Rensselaer] Gula, Bower, Shoemaker
    2. Sharron Shepard
    3. Searching for John and Agnes Gula, originally from Germany but immigrated to the US in 1846 and settled in Sand Lake, Rensselaer, NY. Can be tracked through Federal and State Censuses through 1875. Most of the family moved to Troy, then out to South Dakota to file homesteads. Catherine Gula Shoemaker was appointed administrator for her father's probate in 1880. Assumed he died in 1880 or 1879. Son Lewis Gula with wife Minnie Miller lived with John and Agnes in 1875. Andrew Bower, son of Hannah Gula Bower, daughter of John and Agnes also lived with them. I can find Minnie Gula in south Dakota in 1900. Land records put Lewis there April 1882. Lewis's son John was born May 1879 in Troy. Can anyone relate to these people or have access to an index for Troy for 1880? I have access to the census just no index. Appreciate any help. Thanks Sharron
