    1. [Rensselaer] Elmwood, Pinewoods and Forest Park cemeteries in Troy
    2. Marianne Briggs
    3. The cemetery I think you're referring to on (actually near) Pinewoods Ave is Elmwood, the emtrance of which actually is at the head of Belle Ave, about two blocks north of Pinewoods. Belle's the first street that branches off from Pinewoods at the beginning near Pawling Ave, The cemetery you can see on Pinewoods (near Maple Ave) is actually the last of three Mt Ida cemeteries. The second Mt. Ida is on Pawling Ave, near the bridge at Brunswick Rd. The first was on the back end of Prospect Park at the foot of Cypress St. The Pinewoods Ave. Mt Ida cemetery is contiguous with Elmwood and the two are often confused. Elmwood is newer and still accepting burials. I don't believe Mt. Ida still does. It is not maintained very well. Forest Park, which is also on Pinewoods Ave, is actually in the town of Brunswick and is located between Troy and Eagle Mills.

    1. [Rensselaer] MILLARD in Berlin--1790-1830
    2. Alvin & Terry Mee
    3. My name is Terry Mee. My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather was Benjamin Millard who came from Washington Co. RI in the 1780's. He was probably the son of John Millard but not sure which mother Catherine Clarke or Freelove Braman. Probably Freelove. Benjamin was born about 1755 and died after 1819 probably in Renss. Co. His son Benjamin(b. 1788) moved on to Allegany County, NY in the 1810's. Benjamin's (1788) siblings were probably Martha, Abigail, Elizabeth and John. His children who were probably born there were Arnold (my ancestor) and Merritt and then born in Allegany County were Benjamin C., Peter Ralph and John D. Would love to hear from anyone who can share or shed some light on this family. Terry Millard Mee

    1. [Rensselaer] Renss. County Cemetery Questions
    2. Hello List, I wonder if someone can help me. Now that the kids are going back to school, I can get back to work on my genealogy. Hurray!!! <g> I was wondering if anyone familiar with the Renss. County area could tell me where Millertown Cemetery is. I checked the Renss. County page at Rootsweb for info, but this is all it says <<Millertown Cemetery Data Source: The stones were copied by Charles Filkins. Directions: The cemetery is located at the four corners, Millertown. >> This isn't helping me at all. I've lived here in Renss. County for 36 years and have never heard of Millertown. Can anyone tell me where this is? Also, are Elmwood, Pinewoods, and Forest Park Cemeteries in Troy all one in the same? I just recently discovered that my g-g-grandmother is buried in Elmwood. A friend is telling me that Elmwood is the cemetery on Pinewoods Ave in Troy. As a child growing up here, I was always told that that was Pinewoods Cemetery. And yet another friend is telling me that that is Forest Park Cemetery! So now I'm completely confused. :( Also, who would have the interment records for Elmwood Cemetery? Is there still an office, or have the records been turned over to the city? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Lisa Corbett-Murray "A woman is like a tea bag. 1. [Rensselaer] NYS and the Civil War...
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I am passing this message on to you lucky people who will be in the area in November. I was lucky to meet Ruth on my recent trip to the Albany Archives.... Hello Vicki Weiss at the NYS Library is putting together great information about where to find Civil War records and giving the following presentation. Please help us locate ALL records that pertain to men who served for NYS in the Civil War. Also of interest would be information of any organizations affiliated with the Civil War such as Women's Relief Organization. Seeking diaries, letters, minutes of meetings, etc. Please include names of regiment or organizations, types of materials, and size of collection as well as the name of the repository where found, repository's address, telephone and email address. Pass this message to ALL museums, libraries, historical and genealogical societies across the USA and ask them to notify Vicki of any information that they might have. Let's be a part of compiling the most complete information about NYS in the Civil War and the men who fought. Vicki has already has received some previously unknown information and you can help to find more. Thank you for helping. 3. I am happy to announce that another ward of the census will be going on line starting sometime tomorrow! 1. [Rensselaer] Slavery in Rensselaer Co.
    2. E.M. Garrity
    3. I am quite surprised at the number of slaves counted in the 1810 & 1820 U.S. Census in Schodack. In NY it was illegal to have slaves after 1827. Are there any local records available recording their change of status? Any record of buying, selling, taxing? I've read the McManus A history of Negro slavery in New York, but that doesn't cite sources tied to Rensselaer County. Liz Garrity

Any record of buying, selling, taxing Hi, Liz, I don't know about Rensselaer Co., but down south, it is common to find slaves listed in estate inventories, bequeathed in Wills and bought and sold in the deed records (they were considered property). 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have added Albany Rural Cemetery (101,000 graves) and Oakwood Cemetery (over 50,000 graves) to my Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources. These are the two largest cemeteries in the area. Earlier this month I added a preliminary section on the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese Cemetery Office. It can direct you to Catholic cemeteries in 14 counties. This section was revised and expanded Saturday. I had also added information on the office of the Catholic Archivist and what information is available there. You can now get information in my Guide for the 11 cemeteries managed by the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese Cemetery Office. But, I have also written to the proper person to encourage them to post the contact information for the 87 parish run cemeteries in the 14 county area of the Albany Diocese. If they don't want to do it, I have asked for permission to post it on my website since I already have the information (from them). Cliff

    3. Here is a copy of an email sent to listowners and board managers: Late yesterday we began receiving reports that people could not access ancestry.com or more importantly boards.ancestry.com (they were receiving "host unknown" errors and traceroutes were impossible to do as well). Today, we've received word that, as time goes by, more people are unable to connect. The people who were having problems yesterday are still having problems today. This message is to let you know that the problem has been escalated internally at Provo. No ETA on a fix/resolution. We have escalated the problem.
