    3. Yes, New York State conducted a 1855 state census. I just viewed it for Troy at my local LDS Family History Library, film # 0,549,885 This census has interesting info, besides listing all the family members and their ages, it also asks what county of NY or other state or country they were born in, whether they are married or widowed, number of years residing in city/town, occupation, whether they are native, naturalized or alien American. There is no index that I know of for this census nor did I find page numbers, so if you are asking for a lookup from someone, it would be difficult unless you have the ward number and the dwelling and family numbers. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. In reply to Lin who is researching WILSON. I am researching a Caroline Wilson born in 1822 in NY. Her daughter Mary Ester Pierce was born in Troy around 1852. Caroline was listed as widow of David Pierce when she, her daughter and possibly two brothers, Samuel and James Wilson, first appeared in the Cincinnati, OH city directories of late 1860s. Any connections? I'd be grateful for any suggestions or advice from anyone. Thank you. 3. Hi- I want to thank all of you who responded to my request for info on Dr. John Taylor and to let you know that among the many responses I received was one which identified his father who I have been looking for at least 3 or more years! This is the message from Pat who found him through Dr. John's son, George by his 2nd marraige to Grace Ann Totten. " I found the following on the Ancestry.com Registry of the Sons of the American Revolution. This seems to point to Col. John Taylor who died on 11/5/1801 on your obit list. Looks like they were in NJ and PA. A NATIONAL REGISTER OF THE SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PRINCIPAL EVENTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. GEORGE MUIRSON TOTTEN TAYLOR, Pittsburg, Pa. (13762). Son of John and Grace Ann (Totten) Taylor; grandson of John Taylor, Colonel New Jersey State Troops. Google.com led me to this page when I put in George Muirson Taylor" The page was from the Sons of the Revolution ( the Centennial Register ) of ancestors. It lists John Taylor, Captain, Major & Colonel, 4th Regiment, Hunterdon County, NJ Militia 1775-1779. He was born Aug. 1751 and died Nov. 1801. The two descendants listed as members of the SAR are Charles Henry Taylor and George Muirson Totten Taylor. These were the two sons of Dr. John by his 2nd wife and grandsons of Col. John. I had them listed as Charles H. Taylor since I have papers of his and he signed his name with the initial H. and he was born in 1830 and all I had on George was from the 1850 census when he was listed as George M.- and son of Dr. John Taylor - age 16 so he was born in abt. 1834. His youngest child, George, of his 2nd marraige was the last one I would have searched for to find his grandfather's name! But obviously, these are the 2 half-brothers of my ggreat-grandmother, Lucretia Jane Taylor, the eldest child of Dr. John b. in 1812 and one of his 3 children by his 1st wife, Elizabeth (Quintard) Carpenter. I can hardly believe it- after all this time and I was waking everyone in the house up last night when I got the news- I can't thank Pat enough and all of you who were so helpful and gave me so many good leads!! When I trace his ancestry, I will let you know- meanwhile, if any of you have him in your ancestry or Taylors in New Jersey, let me know and maybe we can work on together to fill in any gaps. Apparently, Col. John moved to Renn County after the war or at some point b/c his obituary was published in the Lansingburg Gazette and the date matched the date of death listed in the SAR records. Thank you all again, Annabel Bixby

    3. I saw a couple items relating to Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, NY on ebay this morning and thought I'd mention them here for folks with an interest in that cemetery. These items do NOT appear to relate at all to information about who is buried there or plot locations or anything like that as far as I can see. These would only be of interest if you want some photos of the cemetery from the nineteenth century and a list of the published bylaws of the cemetery from that period. Again, these items do NOT appear to be of any help in determining specific information about names or dates of those interred there (except maybe the famous like Uncle Sam or Emma Willard). Also, I have no connection to the sellers and cannot vouch for them or these items.

    3. The address for the Rensselaer County Historical Society is: 57 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180. Their phone is: (518) 272-7232. They also have a website: http://www.rchsonline.org/ You may want to start your inquiries with the Lansingburgh Historical Society, if you haven't consulted them already. Their mailing address is: P.O. Box 219, Troy NY 12182. Street Address: 2 114th Street. Troy, NY 12182. Their phone is: (518) 235-3501. They're not as large or well staffed an operation so they may only be open certain days, but they may also have exactly what you're looking for or even know of your ancestor right away since their area of emphasis is so much narrower than the RCHS. I can't offer any more assistance except that Mahlon Taylor is a prominent name in early Troy history, being the operator of one of the first mills on the Poestenkill which was the site of many of the industries that were instrumental in Troy's development as the seat of the early American Industrial Revolution. If he turns out to be an ancestor...well, he's a significant early figure in Troy history.... Good luck! Marianne Briggs mbriggs@nycap.rr.com

    3. Hi, I have been on this site for 3+ yrs w/o any luck- but thought I would try again! One question I have is does anyone know how to contact the Renn County Historical Society or the medical board for the county or any info on what church might have existed in Troy bet 1793-1804 prior to the founding of St. Pauls Episcopal in Troy and Trinity Episcopal in Lansingburg ( where I might locate baptismal or marriage records) I hit a brick wall on my 2nd great-grandfather and his ancestry, Dr. John Taylor although I have a lot of information about him! In addition to the following information, possibly someone else has info on his 2nd wife, Grace Ann TOTTEN, or that family; or the ALVORD family- ( his son m. Helen Alvord d/o Gardiner Tracy ALVORD, ESQ. of Uttica. Also, the WINGS family in Lansingburg- John's daughter, Lucretia Taylor Arms was a partner in a coal business with ?? WINGS. ) Also, Thomas CARPENTER, ESQ. of Lansingburg- Dr. John's father-in-law who died in 1831 in Lansingburg and may have been a lawyer there. 1. Grace Ann TOTTEN ( March 1800-05 January 1845 ) on 14 May 1827 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lansingburg, New York. I do not have her parents' names. Dr. John Taylor was admitted to practice medicine by the Renn County Med. Society in 1819 and he lived and practiced medicine at 25 State Street in Lansingburg, Renn Co. for 40 yrs. ( from "History of Renn County" and census records.) He died 16 May 1860 and was buried in the cemetery of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lansingburg, Renn. 3. Hello, Terry I can't help with these MILLARDs you mentioned, but I wonder if anyone out there recognizes an Amelia MILLARD who was born in about 1840 and who must have lived in Troy when she was a child. She deposed in 1894, while residing in Muir, Ionia Co Michigan, that she had known Azelia VAN BUREN WHITAKER AUSTIN (1831-1917) from the time they were children. I am certain that Azelia lived in Troy, Rensselaer Co NY when SHE was a child, and right on up until her marriage there in 1849, when Amelia was about 9. MILLARD might be Amelia's married name; if so, what was the maiden surname of this deponent Amelia? Thanks for any clues! And good luck with your MILLARDs, Terry. 2. Before I post my message I need to know if Troy is in this county? I thought I saw something that led me to believe it was in Albany county. Then I also posted to the NYC list tthinking it had something to do with census request. Somebody on this list kindly told me I was on the wrong list and should submit to this one. My ancestor, Thomas McCorkle had a dairy farm in the 1880s in Troy, New York. I guess before I start asking about him I need first figure WHERE I should be looking. Thanks for bearing with me.
