Pat, I agree whole heartedly agree with you about the number of deaths for such sad reasons. One such reason for death which has always bothered me is "teething". How can or why does a child die from "teething"? I have seen children at age 3 or 4 even listed and the reason for death is teething. Sort of scary when you wonder if the "remedies" had anything to do with it. Patti Orlando
Thank you everyone for letting me know consumption was tb. I feel pretty dumb! But would rather you address your remarks to the list so everyone can learn as I am. Yes, I was also astounded about how many children were listed as dying from "teething". When my kids were little I blamed their diaper rash and crankiness on teething but to die from it?? But, guess it is just the ignorance of the time. Another question. A couple died from "temperance". Does this mean alcoholism? Again, thanks all for helping me out but I would love the discussion to be on the list. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

As I sit here typing these deaths, I can't help from being affected by the information. To see children dying of teething, croup, scarlet fever, sometimes more than one in a family is heart wrenching, not to mention the young woman dying with her twin babies during childbirth. Also the Civil War deaths are moving. It is hard to picture our soldiers dying in southern prisons of starvation, or having limbs amputated right on the battlefield. I visited Gettysburg this summer for the first time and these deaths are looking very vivid. I guess that is why I wanted to share this information with everyone. Can someone please tell what consumption is? So many immigrants in their 20s seem to die of it. Aren't we lucky we have found so many causes of these illness and are now able to be innoculated against them? -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I thought I would pass this on to our list. I joined today. For $35 a year, you do a good deed, can take it off your income taxes as a donation and you will get this wonderful magazine. (518) 473-7091 or www.nysarchives.org The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust announce the publication of a new quarterly magazine, "New York Archives." The feature articles and departments in this unique publication draw their content from the millions of historical records in the care of the State Archives and thousands of other historical organizations located in virtually every community in New York State. "New York Archives" is designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. The first issue includes: · An interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy discussing how he uses historical records to research his novels and screenplays. · An examination of the difficulties faced by President Abraham Lincoln when writing the Emancipation Proclamation by noted Civil War authority Harold Holzer · Recollections of Joseph Persico, Nelson's Rockefeller's speech writer, about his former boss. A regularly scheduled section, "Archives Around New York," informs readers about interesting collections of historical records in communities throughout the state. The first issue highlights a variety of human interest stories associated with records from the Town of Huntington, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, the Westchester County Library, and the Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery. Other sections provide tips on genealogy and offer helpful hints from professional conservators on how to care for treasured family photographs and records. The magazine also keeps readers updated about the programs of the State Archives, the Encyclopedia of New York State, the New York State Freedom Trail, and other archives-related projects. "A magazine like New York Archives is long overdue. There is no other publication that enriches your knowledge of New York history while increasing your understanding of the importance of archives to research, writing, education, and cultural tourism," said State Archivist V Chapman Smith. New York Archives is published by the Archives Partnership Trust as a benefit of membership in the Trust. The Archives Partnership Trust is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established by New York in 1992 to support the programs of the State Archives, which reach out to 4300 local governments and 3000 community organizations around the state. My thanks to Shirley and Bill Moore for transcribing the West Ghent Reformed Church Cemetery records for posting on my website. I have posted two versions. You can look for the 565 names alphabetically or by family plot. On my website, look for Vital Records-Deaths, then Columbia Co. Choose the view you prefer. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ The most abundant names are Dingman, Engel, Kittel/Kittle, Leggett, Link, Philip, Van Bramer and Van Valkenburgh. But, there are a lot of others, of course. Cliff Lamere Albany, NY
Hi, folks! We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com (We felt that even folks researching counties adjacent to Washington County NY might benefit from having the resource described below. So please forgive the cross postings.) In my book, Portraits of Poverty, I abstracted over 1600 Inmate Registration Certificates (from 1875 through 1900) from the WASHINGTON County Poorhouse We just posted the complete NAME INDEX. You can find the index and lots of information about the certificates and the book on the WASHINGTON County page. If you would like more poorhouse information, I will be doing presentations about poorhouse history and records (see http://www.poorhousestory.com/PRESENTATIONforNov2001.htm ) on November 10th in Orange County and on November 17th in Saratoga for Heritage Hunters. I would really like to meet some of you folks there! (We've gotta stop meeting just like this ... only by e-mail. <grin>) DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW YORK on the table of states, then on WASHINGTON on the table of counties. If you will scroll down to the section on Records, you will see the entry (with a yellow NEW arrow). (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady) BestWishes, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
