    1. Re: [Rensselaer] HAWLEY Family Letter
    2. My Grandfather's first wife's name was Mary Alice Hawley. She was born on April 28, 1883 and died on Aug. 10, 1962. She is buried in Dewittville, NY. She and my grandfather had 2 children. Their son and his wife had one daughter, who is still living. Unfortunately I do not know much about this family because my dad did not know until late in his life that his father had been married before. But I do have the address of the living daughter. I will try to research a little more on this family. Sue McGill

    3. I have Jabez HAWLEY from the 1870 census (NY Onondaga Syracuse 4th Ward p 21) listed as age 45, Cabinet Maker, with wife Dorothea age 50, Fred, 19, Drug Clerk, Mary, 16 and Irene, 10. Fred S. HAWLEY b. Jan 1851 went on to found Hawley's Drug Store in Moravia, Cayuga County, NY in 1877. His son, Ralph Wright Hawley b. 22 Sept 1879 joined the business in 1908. Ralph's son Richard Foster ("Dick") Hawley b. 2 Nov 1923 d. 26 Jan 2005 joined the business in 1955. The store closed after 127 years in business following Dick's death earlier this year. Here is a link to what I know http://www.nonesuchfolks.com/TNGP/descend.php?personID=I7386&tree=nsf I would be interested in a copy of the letter to attach to the Hawley records on my website. 1. HAWLEY Family Letter
    2. Shelley & Tomas Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old family letter written by Thressa HAWLEY "Sister" of Spring Garden, Florida to Jabez HAWLEY "Brother" of Syracuse, New York. The letter was dated February 24 1879 and includes a number of clues to the identity of this family including: During the 1880 census I find Nathan HAWLEY and Thresia HAWLEY living in Kenosha, WI in a boarding house. Nathan is listed as age 71, born in VT, a retired Merchant and his wife Thresia is age 48, also born in VT. I believe that Nathan HAWLEY was b. 22 Dec 1808 in Kenosha, WI, the son of Nathan HAWLEY and Electa PURDY. Nathan married Maria F. TOWSLEE on the 19th of Jun 1850. I'm not sure based on this if Thresia or Thressa is his first or second wife. * Mentions their move from Kenosha to Florida. * Talks of Nathan who I believe is her husband, indicates his health is poor. * States that Nelson & Cornelia and four of the girls are living in town with Towslee. Guessing that Towslee is a son since that was Nathan's wife's maiden name. * Ellen is living in Racine, keeping house for a friend. * Wolcott has bought land in Texas and will start a vineyard. * George is in Boston with two children. The 1880 census of Winchester, MA includes the HAWLEY Family. George HAWLEY age 42, born in NY, a Druggist living with his wife Harriet N. age 38, born in MA, a daughter Bessie P. age 11, and son Francis N. age 3, both children born in MA. George's sister-in-law, Mary W. PAGE age 45 is also living with the family. Additional records indicate that George Francis HAWLEY was b. 31 Jan 1836 in Skaneateles, NY to parents Major Nelson HAWLEY and Cornelia FRANCIS and that he married Hattie Northy RUSSELL on the 16th of Oct 1867. Major Nelson HAWLEY b. 8 Jun 1801 in Kenosha, WI was the son of Nathan HAWLEY and Electa PURDY, his wife Cornelia FRANCIS was b. 16 Oct 1814 in Skaneateles, NY, the daughter of Samuel FRANCIS and Anna TODD. Nelson & Cornelia had 9 children: Ellen; George Francis; Cornelia Ann; Butler Wolcott; Emma Elizabeth; Nelson; Julia Mallory; Laura Horton; and Anna Kellogg HAWLEY all born in Skaneateles or Troy, NY between 1834 and 1853. * Ralph and family are wintering with Mrs. CLEGHORN (Sarah HAWLEY) in Madison, Wisconsin. I believe this is Ralph HAWLEY b. 19 Mar 1808 at Kenosha, WI to parents Nathan HAWLEY and Electa PURDY. Ralph married Julia F. MALLORY on the 12th of Oct 1836. * James is preaching. * J. Hawley hasn't been heard from was last on the way to Chicago. * Talks about Mary's children. * Caroline sent a letter recently. Based on limited research I was able to locate the family of Jabez HAWLEY living in Syracuse, NY during the 1880 census. Jabez HAWLEY was 76 years old at the time, born in NY, a Cabinetmaker whose parents were born in VT. His wife Dorcas was 60 years old, born in NY to NY born parents. Their daughter Irene was living with them at the time of the census, her age listed as 20 years, a School Teacher, also born in NY. Jabez HAWLEY was b. 1 Nov 1803 to parents Nathan HAWLEY and Electa PURDY and married his first wife, Elizabeth GUNN on 25 Jan 1843. His second marriage was to Dorcas SHERWOOD on 3 May 1848. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful piece of family history can be returned to family for safekeeping. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. Abigial Richer and Peter Bonesteel
    2. dave rinsem
    3. Hi Lisa, You may already know this , but I just realized it . Abigail Richer and Peter Bonesteel, are also related thru the marriage of Nicolaus Bohnenstiel and Anna Maria Elizabeth Treber . Abigail --father Jacob Richer , son of John Killean Richer and Anna Maria Bohnenstiel whose parents were Nicolaus Bohnenstiel and Anna Maria Elizabeth Treber. Peter -- who goes back to Nicolaus thru son Lodowick[an early settler in Grafton], and is Anna Maria's younger brother . I keep looking for Almon Bonesteel facts and finding things I'm not looking for, but are relevant. Also surprising is the large number of Bonesteel/Hayner relationships.[mostly from the Hayner web site]. I also found out Paul Bruno, living son [hopefully] of Carol Slaughter and Herbert Bruno, has the bible of Peter Bonesteel. Carol is the daughter of James C. Slaughter and Lena Hayner. James is brother of Elizabeth Slaughter who married Albert Hayner. Lena and Albert are children of Charles Enos Hayner and Chloe Bonesteel. See ya Dave

    2. Dave, My apologies for not writing sooner. I have tried to find out more information but my mother doesn't know what my father was talking about when he passed the comment. She has no interest in genealogy, and said my father never really discussed his family. She knew his immediate family and didn't question beyond that. Too busy looking forward to look back! I've written to ask an older relative whether there is any truth to the comment with regard to our family, but haven't heard anything. Do you know the other names involved even if they aren't Bonesteel's? I'd really like to know. You can always email me off list. I'm not tracing this side of the family but have a list of family names "somewhere" in my "stuff". I'm not even sure Bonesteel is one of them, but can't say for sure. Where could I find information to read on these murders?? Would you direct me to wherever you came by this information, please? Perhaps newspaper articles, or maybe something you could email me, etc...I rather doubt my father was joking entirely. It may have been something he had heard as a child. I don't know, but would like to. Hope to hear from you, Sheila

    1. Re: [Rensselaer] RE:BONESTEEL/BOHNENS
    2. dave rinsem
    3. Hi Shelia, What is your connection to the Bonesteel name ? Your father may not have been entirely joking ! Andrew Bonesteel, born 1855, "son" of Peter Bonesteel was illegimate and actually the son of unmarried daughter Abigail at age 20. The murder could be from the novel "The Rosewood Casket" whose main character, Nora Bonesteel is charged with the murder of a child. I have no idea when this was written but it is fiction. The other possibilities are true happenings , and occured in 1848 in Petersburgh [which was formed from parts of Berlin , Nassau , Lansingburgh and Grafton], and 1845 in Berlin.[man murdered his wife of 1 week !] The murderer of the 2 people in Petersburgh also confessed to a previous murder of a boy in Hoosick. Not involving Bonesteel's , but maybe basis for story. This area of Rensselaer County was an early settlement area, as the Bonesteel clan made their way North out of Dutchess County, and all are related back to Nicolaus and first wife Anna Catharina , and second wife Anna Margaretha Kuntz. Later immigrants from Germany and/or England may also be related, as I believe his father and mother Niclaus and Susannah Elisabeth Bohnenstiel had at least 2 additional sons that did not migrate in 1710, but may have come over at a later date. Both parents were born 1664, Rhine, Pfalz, Germany for father Niclaus and just Germany listed for Susannah Elisabeth, but probably same location for her. If you think of anything else , please post it, as it may mean something to someone as a memory jogger. Regards Dave [email protected] wrote: >YES!! Please DO continue to post the Bonesteel info. 3. Guess I should have explained my question a little better. I believe that my Great Great Grandmother returned to England about 1870ish and was wondering if there are passenger lists for those going back to England. I have a newspaper clipping about her in 1869 so I know she was here then. I also have burial information for her husband in 1879 who was then listed as single. I have a feeling that as a result of the happenings that were in the newpapaper that she may have returned to England. I have found several of her children in 1870 and 1880 and she is not with them. I did find a woman with her name in the 1891 census and the FreeBDM database show that same women passing on in 1910. My thought was that if I could find records of people returning to England that I would pursue this English woman more.
