What is a local group administrator? Can you only do this if you live in a certain area? I would lovs to do this but I live in CT. This was announced and demonstrated at the FGS conference last weekend. I got a chance to try it out in the exhibit hall and signed up as a volunteer. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I'm sure lots of people signed up over the last week. The project as I understand it is to scan and make images available online with volunteer created indexes to access them. The only project currently in process is Georgia Death Records. If you have a group of volunteers with a project in mind, you should contact them and see if it is something that can be initiated. The indexing can be done more efficiently than on previous projects because (1) the images being indexed will be distributed via the internet in small batches; (2) there will be a time limit on each batch to keep on person from holding up the whole project; (3) the software they developed to facilitate the indexing really speeds extraction and the comparison of A and B sets. (A & B sets: each batch is distributed to two different extractors. Once they upload, the two sets are compared for differences and an administrator or arbitor decides which is correct -- though as I understand it, both versions become part of the index. You can learn more about it at the following links -- including pdf files from the presentations given at the FGS conference. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/Education/frameset_education.asp?PAGE=education_conferences_fgs_2005.asp http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,605153189,00.html http://genealogy.about.com/b/a/201217.htm http://www.dearmyrtle.com/05/0806.htm Beverly Levine Smallwood Wheeling, Illinois ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 7:26 PM Subject: Re: [Rensselaer] LDS Indexing project > What is a local group administrator? ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE: PROMINENT CITIZENS OF TROY, NEW YORK AND RENSSELAER COUNTY, NEW YORK This message is being sent to: Rensselaer County List Troy Irish Genealogy Society List Albany County List Saratoga County List Schenectady County List Genealogy-NYS List Irish-NY-Troy List NY Irish List Chenango County List NY-Hudson River List NY-Old-News List NY-Rollcall List NY-Mohawk-Valley List NY-Warren-Washington-Saratoga County List The message can be forwarded to other lists where you feel it would be appropriate. If posted to any other lists, please copy me at: [email protected] If you are researching relatives with a TROY, NY area connection, you will be interested in this new on-line, name searchable, data base of almost 1,800 records of prominent Troy and Rensselaer County, New York residents. This data base was extracted from Volume III of the three volume set, Troy and Rensselaer County, New York: A History by Rutherford Hayner printed in 1925. I would be interested in hearing from individuals who found this new data base on prominent citizens useful in locating their relatives. You can write me off list at: [email protected] Thanks to Joan Howe, a Troy Irish Genealogy member from Iowa, for transcribing this data. This volume also contains biographies, family histories and photographs. Joan has volunteered to do lookups. If your relative's names is listed in the volume, contact [email protected] and she will email you a jpg file of the information. These records cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. The information in this data base may include: Date of birth. Place of birth. Date of marriage. Place of marriage. Names of parent's. Name of spouse Names of spouses parent's. Names of businesses connected to the individual. Indication if photograph is in book. Indication if family history is in book. Notes like Civil War service, Mexican War service, etc. Many of the birth and marriage dates listed predate the 1880 law requiring reporting of such information. A quick scan of the data shows births and marriages from cities, towns, villages, etc., throughout the entire area of New York State. In addition, a large number of entries also cover births and marriages occurring in the following countries or states: Canada England Germany Holland Italy Ireland Scotland Alabama Connecticut Kentucky Illinois Iowa Massachusetts Minnesota New Jersey New Hampshire Ohio Pennsylvania Vermont Virginia You can view these records by going to the TIGS website located at: Troy Irish Genealogy Society website http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. We invite you to explore the TIGS website which has been newly redesigned by Jeanne Keefe, the TIGS Web Master. Here you will find local history articles, resources and genealogy research tips as well as several data bases and a number of interesting Troy Area photographs. Also, you can search your surnames in the following additional records automated by TIGS members and other volunteers: Burden Iron Company Steam Mill Payroll Records. (8,236 names) Troy Area Marriage Records. (1,448 names) Troy Area Death Records. (6,031 names) Index-History of the Troy Police Department. (668 names) Bank Officers in Troy Banks From 1801-1891. (299 names) These data bases are part of a continuing effort by the Troy Irish Genealogy Group to make available on line, Troy area records, that may be of interest to genealogy researchers, especially those outside the Troy area. As previously mentioned, these records are NOT limited to Irish surnames. The above series of records were transcribed by 28 TIGS members and other volunteers. Eighteen of the volunteers were from the Troy area while the other volunteers lived in Massachusetts, Iowa, Utah, North Carolina, Michigan, Maryland and California. We are now in the development stages of a major new project of automating the Rensselaer County marriage index. Our plans are to scan the source documents and send a pdf file as an email attachment to the volunteer workers. Data would then be entered into an excel spread sheet and returned. This index may exceed 30,000 names and we can use a lot more volunteers than the 28 used on the previous projects. If interested in working on this project, please write me off list at: [email protected] and send me your name, address and telephone number. The number of items to be data entered are minimal as shown by the following examples taken from the index: Surname ABEL Given Name JOHN C. Volume Number 3 Page Number 125 Marriage Record Number 10249 Marriage Date Oct. 8, 1918 Surname HART Given Name MARGARET. Volume Number 3 Page Number 125 Marriage Record Number 10249 Marriage Date Oct. 8, 1918 (NOTE: There are separate index pages for names of grooms and for names of brides. The ABEL record above was taken from the "A" index page for grooms and the HART record above was taken from the "H" index page for brides. The marriage record number, 10249, is what links these two records together.) Hope you enjoy visiting the Troy Irish Genealogy Website and that you find a relative's name there. Thanks to those who replied to my question on where to find an obit for George MILLIS. Thanks, Cindy --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page
You are both right! As far as I know, the only Bath that is currently called Bath in NY state is indeed in Steuben Co NY. HOWEVER, prior to 1897, there was indeed a Bath in Rensselaer Co NY. It was called Bath-on-the-Hudson, and it was a spa and a village in the town of North Greenbush. In 1897, most of it was absorbed into the newly created city of Rensselaer. On the Rensselaer Co NY GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrensse/, you can click on "newspapers" and see a long list of newspapers published in our county and the dates of their coverage. There are also links to libraries, such as the NY State Library and the Troy Public Library, where microfilms of these newspapers are held. Hope this helps! Hello to Cindy and Pat: There was another Bath besides the one in Steuben County. Bath, formal name of Bath-On-The-Hudson was a village in the Town of North Greenbush, Rensselaer County. It was absorbed into the City of Rensselaer in 1897. Hi Cindy Bath is not in Rensselaer County. It is located in Steuben County New York. May I suggest that you join the Painted Hills Genealogical Society and the cost is only $5. and they cover this County. http://www.paintedhills.org/formmail.html Good Luck Pat R
Could someone tell me who (library, gene society, newpaper?) to contact to obtain this obituary be it there is one? I found this information listed on the Civil War Pension File for George. If anyone has access to a library that might carry this obit I'd be grateful if someone could email me the details. Thanks, Cindy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dave (and other interested parties!), 1) I haven't got any court records on Sarah "Sally" and David's marriage. Will have to do this. All I have is Sally's statement in the pension application that they were married and the date. 2) Harriet was definitely married to Almon Bonesteel, not to William Russell. Sally's pension application required her to list each of her children, their spouses, and whether these children could be counted on to provide her with financial support. Sally states her daughter Harriet as being married to Almon Bonesteel, and that they were unable to financially support her. As for the dates of birth, I don't have any for the Rogers's that far back. In most cases, I just have the approximate year. I think Marsha based her dates on the date the censuses were taken, but I'm not sure. No, I don't have a maiden name for Sally but I sure wish I did! Where did you find the initial S??? Maybe Simmons?!?! I was hoping that the pension papers would list her maiden name, but no such luck. 3) Okay, as for the Bonesteel lineage from William Sanford Bonesteel back, I have something different. I have William Sanford son of Jonas, Jonas son of Adam, Adam son of Ludwig/Lodewick, Ludwig son of JOHAN FRIEDERICH and Catharina Mayer, Johan son of Nicholas and Anna Margaretha Kuntz. You have Nicholas Bonesteel and Anna Elizabeth Treber where I have Johan and Catharina. Hmmmmm. I need to look into that a little more. You could be right. 4) Almon's parents...........why do you think Abigail's his mother? Not doubting you, just wondering. I'm still really tempted to order his pension papers from the war and see if he lists his parents names. I think I'll do it. I'm dying of curiousity. LOL 5) I agree with what you have on Peter Bonesteel and Abigail Richer's children, except I have their daughter Abigail being married first to Levi Hayner, who was killed in the Civil War. They had one child, John Levi Hayner, born in 1862, the year his father was killed. 6) I suspected that Abigail's maiden name was Richer. Glad you agree. I'm still at a brickwall with Jacob Rogers 1804-1855. I had a wild idea recently that, since I can't find a Rogers family that he connects to, maybe he changed his name to Rogers from something like...oooooohh....maybe....Richer?! Abigail Richer's father was Jacob Richer. Jacob Richer. Jacob Rogers. Sort of sound alike, don't they? Coincidence? Things that make you go "Hmmmmmmmm!" Thank you so much. Marie Cleophine Alba was Marie Cleophe Blanche -- my grandmother. She married Thomas H. Strachan in 1909. This family kept moving from Quebec to New York -- not sure why. Were there any other records of children of Adjutor and Marie Laure -- such as Marie Laura Clara, Adele, Wilfrid, or J. Napoleon? I found the family in St. Henri, Canada in 1901 living next to F. Xavier Tanguay but without Adele Grenier (Dugrenier) --- so I am not sure where Adele died and was buried. You are very kind to have looked into this for me. Looking for info on Francois Xavier and Marie Adele Grenier (Dugrenier) who lived in Troy, New York around 1868 &1887 - perhaps longer. Their daughter, Marie Laure Tanguay married Adjutor Belanger in the Troy, NY area and their first child, Marie Blanche Belanger was born in Troy in 1886. M. Adele Tanguay may have died in Troy and I would love to have evidence of her death. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carla Lakatos
