    1. re: (Rensselaer) Railroad Information
    2. ConnorsGenealogy
    3. That is a great picture, Joan, and I would certainly love to know all the men's names. My grandfather's brother, John O'Connor b 1880, started working for the railroad in Troy. However, I found him in New York City in the 1920 census and then in Albany in 1930. Interesting enough, he was the Yard Master in Albany and was killed on the job in 1940 when he was run over by a train. I don't have any pictures of him but do have one of his son that I found in the Albany newspaper of when he was ordained a priest. -- Pat Connors, currently visiting Albany NY

    1. Railroad Information
    2. Joan Howe
    3. I am writing to both the Albany list and the Rensselaer County list. I am searching for information on early 1900 railroad crews in the Troy area, prompted by a reply I received recently to a picture I have posted on the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. The picture and information I submitted are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/EdDuffyInfoPage.htm Ed Broecker wrote to me and believes a "railfan" may be able to shed more light on the subject. Ed gave me permission to share his reply: If you can find someone in the area who has an historic interest in the railroads of the area, I would think they can make a pretty good guess concerning this group. It seems to be something like a yard gang, with the foreman or supervisor in the center of the second row wearing a tie and clean shirt. One of the men in that row seems to have his shoulders covered in coal dust, another seems to have oil or some other stain across his shoulders. The rest seem to be in fairly unsoiled clothes and so were perhaps brakemen in the yard. It is a complete unit - supervisor, clerk and perhaps engineer, fireman and brakemen for a switch engine. Something like that. The date can probably come from someone identifying the equipment - are they sitting on some sort of platform on a work car. You can see a door in the wall behind them, small wheels and a 90-degree bar that is used to perhaps uncouple the car without going onto the tracks between cars. That is a very old car with the iron straps at the corners. Apparently their identity is tied to the ladder or tower that is purposely in the photo, in fact one of the men has his hand on it, indicating perhaps that it is an item of pride for him. Or maybe he is just trying to keep his balance. I don't really know what I am seeing, but I am sure there is a dedicated railfan in the area who can tell you. <end> Any information about this crew or crews like it in South Troy in that time frame would be appreciated. Joan Howe

    1. BRENENSTUHL Family Photograph
    2. Shelley & Tomas Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Bessie N. BRENENSTUHL which was taken at the C. C. Schoonmaker Studio in Troy, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Bessie only an infant at the time. In addition to her name some has also written "To Grandma, compliments of" on the back of the photograph. I'm hoping to locate someone from this BRENENSTUHL Family so that this precious old photograph can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. LEA - GARDNER Family Autograph Album
    2. Shelley & Tomas Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old autograph album which originally belonged to Mary E. LEA of Lansingburgh, New York. The album is dated January 1877, also referring to the owner as "Miss Mame LEA", "Mame GARDNER" and "Mamie", the addition of the GARDNER name suggesting this might be her married name. The album includes entries by both family and friends as follows: Autograph Album of Mary E. LEA of Lansingburgh, New York, Dated January 1877 Miss Mame LEA Mame GARDNER "Mamie" Based on limited research I believe that Mary E. LEA was the daughter of William M. & Ruth A. LEA who were living in Lansingburgh, NY during the 1870 census. At the time of the census William was age 33 and his wife Ruth A. was age 30. Mary was just 7 years old at that time. All three were said to have been born in NY. Living next door to them was James LEA age 64, born in England, who I'm thinking may have been William's father. Later in the census of 1900 William is listed in the records as William M. LEA suggesting that this is the man signing in her album. Willie James LEA may have been a brother born after the 1870 census and named after his father and grandfather. Family: * William M. LEA, 23 Jan 1877 * Will L. GARDNER, 26 Jul 1882, Troy, NY I do find record of a William GARDNER age 10 years living with his family in Troy, NY during the 1880 census. William is the son of Thomas & Sarah GARDNER. Thomas is age 39, his wife Sarah age 37 and they have 5 children living with them at the time. The children are Julia age 11, William age 10, Annie age 7, Homer age 5, and Edner age 2, all born in NY as were their parents and grandparents. * Willie James LEA, 24 Jan 1887 * Annie KNIGHT, 15 Aug 1879, Lansingburgh, NY to Darlington, WI "Cousin" Friends: * W. It is in his letters that I find "My cousin Ben Green" Also his Gma married 4 times, once to a Green during the 30's and 40's Probably Sand Lake. She was Polly Coon, Muir1, Wait2, Green3, Dennison4. I have many Green/Greene cousins but they all have big numbers, either 5+ cousin and/or 5+ removed. I Know there are closer ties and I'd like to find them. They and my family are intertwined in the 1800's and in RI earlier. And a connection to GA. Are the Wait/Waite's there also? I have no reference to anyone moving there. 1. Re: [Rensselaer] Greene in Renselaer and Staats
    2. Bob: There is a birth record in the vital records of Petersburgh NY for Charles and Waitte Green: they had the following children: Charles `10/10/1779 Russel 1/20/1781 Caleb 9/17/1782 Paul 8/25/1784 Waitte 12/20/1786 Jared 8/28/1788 William 8/12/1790 Perhaps this William is the one you are looking for. There are also records for a Captain Charles Green in the Van Rensselaer Manor Papers as renting property in Little Hoosick (Petersburgh) in 1788. Possibly (probably) the father above. Also in the Van Rensselaer Manor Papers are several Staats families, but no Stutz. There is also a William Green received into the Seventh Day Baptist Church on 11/2/1811. The church is in what was once called Little Hoosuck (sic). Hope that helps. Trudy Millard Krause

    3. Hi Pat, the response to my Greene/Green query has been overwhelming, and is greatly appreciated. All the information I have is an oral history written by his youngest Alabama son several years before his death in 1952. So the date of his birth could be way off and no fathers or mothers name was given. The only reference to his NY wife is that they had three children, no names, and they died. He left NY, Troy specifically. and ended up in Alabama in 1835 where he married and this marriage produced 23 children. Fifteen lived to adulthood and are well documented in Alabama. I did locate a William Green born in 1790 who Married Mariah no last name and have not been able to locate other information on this couple. Her time of death, if memory serves was 1821. My son, has researched the town and county records in Troy several years ago but no definite results there. I have also paid a researcher who has checked land records, wills and a good many church records with no results. Distance is my enemy, I live in far West Texas and grew up in Alabama and the closest LDS is 150 miles away. Thanks everyone. Bobby Green Brown
