There a number of ways that a transcriber can mess up that name and misinterpret the spelling. Try doing a soundex search or think of the many ways that your surname could be spelled. The name Gustave could be spelled several ways also. If the index you are using gives you "advanced mode/search" try using just the first name, residence place, age and birthplace of Gus and leave out the surname and see what emerges. You might not be able to find them if you are using ancestry.com verses familysearch.org. Familysearch.org has (in my opinion), a much better index search. I have more success with them than ancestry. If you are trying to use Heritagequest.com their index is not complete. It could be that they just were not enumerated for what ever reason or maybe they are in a place that you do not expect them to be. In other words a researcher needs to think outside of the box when they cannot find their ancestor in these situations. Good Luck to you and hope you find your person.
