I don't want to dismay you, but in NY it's not as easy as they lead you to believe. My family had to do a similar job concerning a deceased relative, and we had to get appointed as executrix/administrator for every succeeding ancestor from us on up, and prove the appointed one was deceased, and had no successor. I truly hope it is easier for you, because for us it was a nightmare. Plus we had to go each time to where the person died (from person X in Queens to get appointed, then person Y in Manhattan to get appointed, and so on.) On the brighter side, when Creedmoor was formed it was an offshoot of the Brooklyn State Hospital, so perhaps they have a link to the records. There's a lot of resistance to access to medical files, especially psychiatric ones. I hope you have good luck in your search.
