Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WUB.2ACI/1269.2 Message Board Post: The pounder was responsible for impounding straying and trespassing livestock caught within a town or in a designated area of a town. He would maintain the enclosure or pasture where the animals were kept until the owners claimed their animal(s) and paid the fee for the cost of the care in the pound. The pounder was also sometimes responsible for the sale of unclaimed animals. Fence viewers had several duties pertaining to fences and enclosures - they had to insure that landowners kept fencing in good repair, to prevent livestock from roaming. The viewer also made sure that fencing was not erected across public roads and paths. In the case of boundary disputes, the viewer was usually on the committee appointed to investigate and help settle the dispute. The viewer would also advise the town authorities of the need for a levy of men to build, repair or replace fencing for common lands.
