Those of you who are still using the ellisisland.org site directly to perform your searches may have discovered that they no longer permit searches with no first name. That is indeed a step backwards for genealogists. It means we can no longer find potential relatives by searching on just the surname. What ever were they thinking when they made this change. Thankfully, we still have Steve Morse. If you do searches from any of his searchforms, even the white form which links directly to the ellisisland.org search engine, you can still omit the first name. I don't know how he is able to do it now that the ellisisland.org site has change, but I am grateful that he can.
