    1. Town names on Long Island
    2. On 11/6/04 (10:08:37 AM MST), Dee Snook (deesgenes1@yahoo.com) asked, "I have a question on town name changes on Long Island. I have in my info that the town Mespath Kills became Newtown and that it is now Elmhurst, Queens County. Can anyone confirm or deny this?" I can't comment on 'Mespath Kills', but the Town of Newtown, one of the original 5 towns when Queens County was created on November 1, 1683, would include the current neighborhoods of Long Island City, Astoria and Elmhurst, as well as Maspeth and other nearby neighborhoods. It's my understanding that the Dutch term 'kill' refers to a creek and this could be Newton Creek or some other nearby creek. For a neighborhood map of Queens, please go to: http://www.queenslibrary.org/gallery/past_exhibits/burgh/map.htm I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Sincerely, Walter Greenspan
