I can't comment on 'Mespath Kills', but the Town of Newtown, one of the original 5 towns when Queens County was created on November 1, 1683, would include the current neighborhoods of Long Island City, Astoria and Elmhurst, as well as Maspeth and other nearby neighborhoods. It's my understanding that the Dutch term 'kill' refers to a creek and this could be Newton Creek or some other nearby creek.
