    1. New York State Census tools now on Steve Morse's -- One-Step Website

    3. I just noticed two new sections on the http://stevemorse.org one-step website. One is labeled "Other Ports of Immigration" and contains tools for searching the Baltimore passenger records and the San Francisco passenger records. Steve previously developed tools to search the Ellis Island records and the Castle Garden records. In each case Steve has three tools. One allows you to search for passengers in the database, the second allows you to directly access any microfilm image by roll and frame number, and the third takes you directly to the manifests for any ship arrival. The bad news is that you need to have a paid subscription to ancestry.com in order to use Steve's Baltimore and San Francisco tools. Another new section has to do with the New York State census. If any of you have tried to find someone in the 1905, 1915, or 1925 NYS census, you know how difficult it is because there is no name index. And you can't access the census by address. Instead you need to find out what assembly district and election district the address is in. Steve's new tool lets you determine the districts given for any address. The good news is that this does not require an ancestry subscription -- all the data is on Steve's website. The bad news is his site currently supports only Brooklyn in 1915 and Manhattan in 1915. It looks like he plans to eventually support all the five boroughs in all three census years. This work is thanks to the dedicated effort of Elise Friedman and a team of volunteers. A second tool in the New York State census section allows you to do a name search in the 1925 census for Brooklyn. Suzanne Danet is transcribing all the Brooklyn records. So far she has done about 10% of it but she is a fast worker. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Steve directly. His address is on the website. - Diane Jacobs New York

    3. Thank You. What website do you use to search the Castle Garden records? Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net "All my life, I've done for you. Now it's my turn to do for me." (from the Red Hat Society theme song)
