Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1287.1 Message Board Post: On 1/13/05 (8:21:32 AM MST), in a posting to the Queens County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYQUEENS-L@rootsweb.com, Janet Wood (gigagirl@comcast.net) asked, "Can anyone cite any good references to where I might search for records of land ownership in Queens Co., Hempstead Town for the period of 1800 - 1850? I know the general area within Hempstead, but would like to now get more specific as to where my ancestor owned land. Do maps from this time period exsist that show land owners names on it?" First, not knowing if you are aware that on January 1, 1899, the eastern three-quarters of Queens County, the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay, seceded from Queens County and formed Nassau County. Second, for questions such as yours, you may want to check with the Town Clerk of the Town of Hempstead, the Long Island Studies Institute and the Queens Borough Public Library, in that order: The Town Clerk of the Town of J\Hempstead is also the custodian of town records dating back to 1644 and maintains an inactive records center and historical archive. To date, sixty volumes and twenty maps, including materials from the Town's founding in 1644, have been professionally restored Office of the Town Clerk Town of Hempstead Hempstead Town Hall One Washington Street Hempstead, NY 11550 Tel: 516/489-5000, X3046 Fax: 516/???-???? eMail: ????? http://www.townofhempstead.org./content/tc/menu_tc.html Long Island Studies Institute West Campus Library Hofstra University 619 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, NY 11549-4575 Tel: 516/463-6411 Fax 516/463-6441 eMail: lisi@hofstra.edu http://www.hofstra.edu/Libraries/LISI/index_LISI.cfm Queens Borough Public Library 89-11 Merrick Boulevard New York (Jamaica P.O.), NY 11432 Tel: 718/990-0700 Fax: 718/???-????
