    3. Stuart, searching the NY Times on "Newtown Creek" with "oil" and "refineries," I found about 16 hits. Many of them are classified ads and would require considerable time poring over the pages looking for the occurrences of those words. However, a brief article dated 1866 makes reference to "the Sterling Oil Works, on Newtown Creek." You didn't mention a time frame, so I don't know whether this might be helpful to you in your research. I would be glad to email a scan of the article to you.
