I'm trying to help an adopted cousin find her roots. She says she was born on Ft Totten in the late 40's. Was there a hospital on the base? Where would those birth records be now? She was told that they were sent to St. Louis and lost in a fire. Why wouldn't those records be held by the city of New York? I would appreciate any ideas. Bill
Dear Bill, These birth certificates should be with the NYC Dept. of Heatlh At 125 Worth Street, NYC. I was born in the Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital during World War II and have a BC registered with NYC. The only problem for an adopted child is that the original birth Records may be sealed, but she could write to the Dept. of Health With proof of who she is and see if they have a BC for her. Hope this helps.
