On 4/5/05 (11:30:38 AM MST), in a posting to NYNEWYOR-L@rootsweb.com, ????? (kellen2000@juno.com) asked, "Could someone please explain the court system to me for NY County? I believe there are five boroughs within the county, so would each one have its own local court system? Besides Brooklyn and Manhattan, what are the other boroughs? What is the correct title of the borough-level court? Then, would the Supreme Court cover the entire county? I'm particularly interested in criminal court indexes for the time period of about 1903 through 1926." Currently, in addition to civil and criminal courts that are under the jurisdiction of New York City, each of the 5 counties that are coterminous with the 5 boroughs of NYC, have a Supreme Court, the lowest level of New York State court system, as well as x ounty level Surrogate's Court, etc., etc.. (In NYS, the top court is the Court of Appeals, with the Appeals Court below that and then the county level Supreme Court.) From 1898 to 1914, there were 5 boroughs but only 4 counties as the Boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx were then jointly coterminous with New York County. In 1914, the Bronx County seceded from New York County and since that date New York City is divided into 5 boroughs (city administrative districts) and 5 vestigial counties (sub-divisions of New York State) as: ......Borough............County ......Manhattan.........New York ......Staten Island.....Richmond ......Brooklyn...........Kings ......the Bronx.........the Bronx ......Queens............Queens For complete information on the organzization of the courts, please see: http://www.courts.state.ny.us/courts/ I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
