    1. Cemetery at Freshpond, Long Island?
    2. On 4/3/05 (3:57:56 PM MDT), in a posting to NYC-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com, Janis Mundy (Mundy-Reno@sbcglobal.net) asked, "My husband's great-grandfather, OLIVER GEORGE BRUCE's November 26, 1903 death certificate says he is buried at Freshpond, Long Island. Does anyone have any idea which specific cemetery this might be? The family was living at 500 W. 149th Street in Manhattan. The undertaker was listed as THOMAS BALMFORD at 1871 W. Amsterdam Avenue." Mt. Olivet Cemetery seems to be an ideal candidate (followed by Evergreen Cemetery and Cypress Hills Cemetery). Mt. Olivet Cemetery 65-40 Grand Ave Maspeth, NY 11378 Tel: 718/326-1777 eMail: info@mountolivetcemeterynyc.com http://www.mountolivetcemeterynyc.com According to www.junipercivic.com/berry/1203/namegame.htm: Fresh Pond Road - is an early colonial roadway dating back to 1680, when the settlers improved an Indian footpath. The “old” Fresh Pond Road extended through Maspeth, along current 61 Street, through Ridgewood, and through Glendale along current Cypress Hills Street. It was named for the large fresh water ponds in the vicinity of Mt. Olivet Crescent and Mt. Olivet Cemetery, east of Fresh Pond Road. The 1680 improvement to the ancient footpath coincided with the assignment of large lots of the hills (near Evergreen Cemetery, Highland Park, Cypress Hills Cemetery, etc.) to citizens of the English Newtown settlement in current Queens County. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan
