JOSEPH BURTIS (died 1849) & Elizabeth Denton, parents of JOHANNA BURTIS, MARY J BURTIS, and …. The NY state death cert (2 Nov 1897; #44046) of MARY J WILLETS (born BURTIS – d cert reads: Mary Burtis Willets), & the will of Henry A Burtis - written 1882, proved 1892 - indicate Mary’s father was JOSEPH BURTIS, & that he was born in Christian Hook (in 2009 = Oceanside, Nassau County), Queens, New York. JOHANNA MOORE (born BURTIS) was the sister of MARY J BURTIS. (1882/1892 will of HENRY A BURTIS; 1850 census - Hempstead, then Queens County- now Nassau County, NY, film 583, p 218; lines 25-28); & 1860 census (Hempstead; film 844, p 248). JOSEPH’S Flatbush, NY – now part of Brooklyn - d register entry (Flatbush Record of births, marriages, deaths, 1847-1851, p 25; FHL film 1376354, Item 1) indicates JOSEPH d 22 May 1849 at the age of 55 (calculated b = 1794.) (Flatbush d index at italiangen.org) The d register agrees with the info listed in the d index, & adds: JOSEPH was white, lived in New Lots (which seceded from Flatbush), was a laborer, married, native born, & d from cancer of the stomach. The d register does not give place of burial. In his 1882 (written) /1892 (proved) will, HENRY A BURTIS named some of the children of his deceased brother, JOSEPH: MARY J WILLETS, JOHANNA MOORE, ELIZABETH BLAKE, DELIA ____ (surname not given), RUTH VERITY, & THOMAS BURTIS. The 1840 Flatbush census for JOSEPH BURTIS indicates seven females were living with him- the oldest of whom is presumably his wife, ELIZA born DENTON, & three males one of whom was presumably Joseph’s son, Thomas. (Kings County, NY; film 289; p 834. males: 2 (20-29) (name of other male is unknown as of 11-2009), one (40-49). females: one (0-4) (JOHANNA should have been abt 3), 2 (5-9)(MARY should have been abt seven; the other 5-9 year old or the 10-14 year old should be Delia; the name of the other female is unknown as of 10-2009); one (10-14), 2 (15-19) (should be Sarah Elizabeth & Ruth), one 40-49. Mary & Johanna are identified in HENRY’s will as the children of Henry’s bro, JOSEPH. Elizabeth died at an unknown date aft being enumerated on 27 Aug 1850. Eliza is possibly listed in the 1860 Brooklyn census. CHECK BROOKLYN DEATH REGISTER FOR ELIZA BURTIS & for the following Samuel Burtis deaths, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, Ledger, 1848-1866. Aaron, Josephine to Choclette, (No first name) FHL Film 1378813 In the 1860 census (Brooklyn 11th ward, district three, p 8, family 53)- a Samuel Burtis, a 61 year old shoemaker, is listed with an Eliza, age 60- exactly 10 years older than the Elizabeth listed with Johanna & Mary Burtis in the 1850 Hempstead census. Perhaps this is Eliza, wife of Joseph, & Samuel the bro of Joseph. Joseph had a bro who was a minor at the d of his father in 1816. Samuel could have been 17 & still have been a minor in 1816. This works as the Samuel in the 1850 census is listed without any other Burtis with him. (NY Ward 12, NY, NY; film 548, p: 29) all born NY. Samuel, 61 years old, shoemaker, no real estate; $100 in personal property Eliza, 60 Henry [no initial], 21 [an older Henry Burtis was enumerated next after Eliza Burtis in the 1850 Hempstead census. Henry was the bro of Eliza’s husband. So a son named Henry increases the likelihood that this Eliza Burtis is the same one found in the 1850 Hempstead census. There was no son listed in the 1840 census of Joseph who could have been born in 1840 or 1839. And The Samuel found in the 1850 census had no one listed with him. So, apparently Henry is not Samuel’s son. (No possible Samuel found in NY 1870 census.) Funeral services from his late residence, Greenwich St., Friday, the 5th at 3 o'clock P.M. (1) HENRY A. BURTIS-whose death occurred on Tuesday, was born at Christian Hook in 1805. Until within a few years he was engaged in the boot and shoe business, latterly at his home on Greenwich street, which structure he had erected in 1832 and has since occupied. Mr. Burtis was familiarly known as Col. Burtis, through whom the title originated is not known. He was often called Captain, but this was from the association with the bay, and his delight in taking charge or sailing parties. He only relinquished this privilege about six years ago-then 80 years of age. Mr. Burtis was quite deaf, which affliction he contended partly resulted from his constant use of the clarinet, which instrument he used while in the Band. Deceased was a regular attendant at the M[ethodist] E[piscopal] Church service, while health permitted, uniting with that denomination during Rev. Benjamin Pillsbury's ministry, in 1857, who conducted one of the largest revivals known here. He has one sister living of a family of ten children-Mrs. Sarah Weeks, who is in her 81st year. A wife survives him. The funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, from his late residence. The interment will be in Greenfield Cemetery. - WILL & CODICIL OF HENRY A BURTIS Will listed in the index on 8 Apr 1892, vol 47, p 340; FHL film 1769664. "In the name of God, Amen! She was born in the town of Hempstead on August 15, 1811. Her mother was also born in the same town. Her father was THOMAS BURTIS, who hailed from Quebec [town or province?; ASSUME “Hailed” does not necessarily mean “born”], Canada. He was a seafaring man. Mrs. WEEKS, whose maiden name was SOUTHARD [sic], was married in 1838 [abt age 27] and lived in her native town [Hempstead] until 12 years ago [calculated 1885; in the 1880 Hempstead census], when she came to this city to reside with her daughter. Her ancestors on her mother's side as far back as she has been able to trace were Methodists and were among the original members of the Hempstead Methodist Church [Methodist organized in Hempstead in 1812.] Mrs Weeks husband died five years ago [cal 1892- ASSUME Brooklyn.] Two sons and one daughter, the only children Mrs. Weeks ever had, survive her. The funeral services will be held this evening at 8 o'clock. The Rev. Charles Miler of the DeKalb avenue Methodist church will officiate. The burial will take place in Hempstead, L[ong] I[sland], tomorrow, at 1 o'clock, when a second service will be held, the Rev Dr. John Maynard of the latter place officiating." Comments: -Father “hailed from Canada.” May or may not mean he was born there. Sarah’s obituary indicates her father was b in England. The 1880 census (the first federal census indicating birthplace of parents) for the three children known to have d aft the 1880 census indicate their father was born in New York. Mary & Henry also indicate their mother was b in NY. The birthplace of Sarah’s mother is not given. -Date of Sarah’s marriage & who married http://www.archive.org/stream/newyorkgenealogi108newy/newyorkgenealogi108newy_djvu.txt The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record [probably volume 53, 1922- not clear]*** page numbers: 3-235-257,, 4-381-388, 4-388-392 CHRIST'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AT SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, Nassau., N Y; Marriages by Revd. Sarah's obituary gives 1839 -Possible “Southard” was the maiden name of Sarah’s mother - Thomas Burtis’ wife. Southard is given as Sarah Weekes - born Burtis "maiden" name in her obituary. Have found no indication that Sarah was ever married to a Southard. A Daniel Southard listed in the 1810 census two people from Sarah’s fa, Thomas Burtis. -Ancestors on mother’s side were Methodists and were among the original members of the Hempstead Methodist Church [Get LIST of THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS AS ANCESTORS OF SARAH WEEKES BORN BURTIS MOTHER WERE ORIGINAL MEMBERS. FHL does not have.] http://www.toh.li/content/bz/landmarks/umhempstead.html The Methodist congregation in Hempstead was established in 1812 on what was known as the Jamaica Circuit by the Reverend William Thatcher, an itinerant preacher. Services were held in the home of Stephen C. Bedell.
