I would assume that she was his niece because at one time, he told me that when his family moved West to Illinois (abt 1865), they left behind the "educated" Higgins relatives in NY. I am assuming that Nellie would have been a descendant of those relatives. Unfortunately, I was about 10 at the time he told me and he didn't tell me the names of those family members or where they lived. But since his family lived in NYC before moving to Illinois, I would suspect the others lived there, or nearby, as well. Nor did he tell me the relationship(s). My Grandad quit school at 16 and went to work for the railroad finally retiring as an engineer in 1933. I realize this is a needle in the haystack search but it is now the ONLY clue I have to the NY relatives and the only hope of locating where my Grandad's Father was born in County Roscommon, probably in the vacinity of Boyle, and who his parents and siblings were.
