The U.S. Department of Social Security states on their website that they will forward mail to those with Social Security numbers, who are alive. They use the person's SSN to track them through employment. In this instance, someone born in 1908, is probably deceased, but she still should have had her own Social Security number after 1953. Collect her birth, baptismal, and marriage certificates, names of her parents, places of all these vital records replated to her. Then, I recommend going in person to a Social Security Office, and show them everything you have. At least they can give you her last known surname, and date and place of death. I once had to go there to correct a record, as my long deceased grandmother's surnames, maiden and married, were reversed. Hi Everyone, I am still trying different ways to find a death record for my grandmother. She divorced my grandfather in 1953 and was not heard from by any of her kids ever again. Since she was only 45 years old then and I am not able to find her by her maiden name or her married name, I am assuming she remarried. She divorced in FL. and apparently was living in Jacksonville at that time. I believe she made trips back and forth to NY, since she had family there. I have tried MANY ways to find her, but I have had no success. I've tried doing a first name only with her d.o.b. without any success. I know I have to look for a few years prior and a few years past her birth year, but I wondered if also I should look for d.o.b. with different months and days. So her d.o.b. is 28 Jul 1908, should I look for dates other than Jul 28th? I have looked for this date with 1907, 1906, 1909, 1910. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Liz

I fully understand your problem and have run across it many, many times. Swedish records are wonderful. I have been working on my mom's side of the family for 30 years in the US and still have brick walls. My dad's Swedish side took me 1 year (they were from Oland). Don't give up yet. I find the directories and state census records to be very helpful when I cannot find people I want on the Federal Census. It would really help if our subject lines had a surname or two in them and maybe a hint of what is wanted. When you get many mailing list digests, you decide what to read based on the list at the top of the digest. When there are no clues as to the contents, then I usually delete the whole thing without reading because it takes too long to scroll through deciding if I can help. Elizabet

And I tried all permutations I could think of. Which is why I placed a question here to find out if there are any resources I had not yet tried. But in view of the next answer I obviously had not tried hard enough. Possibly I am spoiled by Swedish registers. I will make sure to look harder next time. So..... on Ancestry I elect to search the 1930 census.... pick "exact" for my choices.... which are born 1905 in Sweden, located in "New York City (All Boroughs)..... and use wild cards ... Gust*. No last name and no other information. Now, if you do the above, you will see only 23 hits. Let's look at any that are in Queens..... and any name that even comes close to a something green.... Hmmmm.... what about Gustas Shelgren on the results..... .... right borough and right birth year and place for head of family. So you click on view record....and see 3 people, with Florence as spouse age 22, Roger with the age of 22 .... hmmmmm... who is Roger.... So I checked your 1925 census to see if your Gus had a brother Roger the same age...but no..... Would you have stopped there? No, you must relax your assumptions, one of them is that Ancestry is correct with their transcription....so we click on view original record and are at ED 41-536 (Ancestry drops the prefix), Sheet 14B (image 25 of 32) and discover that Roger is a son and is actually 2 2/12 years old. Gustav? is a carpenter. I'm willing to bet that this is your missing family member. Joel Weintraub Dana Point, CA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There a number of ways that a transcriber can mess up that name and misinterpret the spelling. Try doing a soundex search or think of the many ways that your surname could be spelled. The name Gustave could be spelled several ways also. If the index you are using gives you "advanced mode/search" try using just the first name, residence place, age and birthplace of Gus and leave out the surname and see what emerges. You might not be able to find them if you are using ancestry.com verses familysearch.org. Familysearch.org has (in my opinion), a much better index search. I have more success with them than ancestry. If you are trying to use Heritagequest.com their index is not complete. It could be that they just were not enumerated for what ever reason or maybe they are in a place that you do not expect them to be. In other words a researcher needs to think outside of the box when they cannot find their ancestor in these situations. Good Luck to you and hope you find your person. Looking into this and talking to relatives I have found his death date, Sep 25th 1933 in New York, using Stephen Morse's site, he is named "Kjellegren": http://stevemorse.org/vital/nydeathresults.html?Esurname=kjellgren&Efirst=&kind=sounds&EnterSoundexCode=K426&County=Queens&cert=&age1=&age2=&unit1=4&unit2=4&StartYear=&EndYear=&month=&day=&birth1=&birth2=&pgsz=100&auth=&time=1339448073478&host=www.italiangen.org I also know he married sometime between 1925 and some years before his death, there were two children (may still be alive), Roger and June. My question is, why am I unable to find this family in the 1930 census? Is there a way to find the marriage record? Suggestions welcomed!
