My condolences to Walter's family. He was a very nice man, generous to all who asked for help and very informative in his replies. Walter passed away on 13 July 2012 at 66 years of age, after a sudden illness. Since there was no formal obituary, please add to this tribute to Walter, for his beloved, adult twin daughters. Walter was born in Brooklyn, NYC, on 20 December 1945, as a Hanukkah gift to Jack and Beatrice Greenspan. Our Brooklyn boy finally returned home to his New York from Montana, and is interred with his parents at Maimonides-Elmont* Cemetery, 90 Elmont Road, Elmont, NY, Nassau County, New York. Walter worked as a commodities analyst for many years. He loved his daughters and Hebrew heritage...and his mom's recipes.** He was quick to inform us of his upcoming holidays, with details including foods and traditions. Simply put, Walter was best known as our Cartology Guru. When you had a question about a place, Walter could untangle its umbilici through its locations, geography, zip codes, and history, then steer you to the right repository. He was the magician of maps, especially with those complicated Long Island hamlets, villages, towns, and neighborhoods. It seemed that he responded with the accurate answer in minutes. Walter, you will be so missed in Metro NYC, Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY. Thanks for your generosity, sense of humor, and astute advice. And, for the record... * "Elmont is an unincorporated census-designated place located in the northwest corner of the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, along its border with the borough of Queens in New York City. It is a suburban bedroom community located on Long Island. The population was 33,198 at the 2010 census." Walter, with your consistent signature, "I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting." You were always interesting! Thanks for the memories, my friend. Barbara Thank you for posting this. I was wondering why he hadn't been posting. What a loss to the genealogy community. He was such a wealth of knowledge and always was ready to help. I just loved his messages at the end of his postings and was so sad when someone called him on it. Our heritage is so important and he was just passing it on. We will miss him. Rest in peace, Walter. You were always the bright light on the New York lists. Who will straighten us out about the histories of the hamlets, villages, towns, townships, and cities of New York state, and especially Long Island. You are already missed. Sent from my iPad

It is a bit of a needle in a haystack, isn't it? Unfortunately, I don't know when William Maher died, and he may even have died in Ireland. He was gone by 1860, when his widow was listed in the federal census, living with a daughter in Jersey City. There doesn't seem to be a death certificate for her, and I'm still trying to trace her siblings. None appear in the Jamaica census records, and trying to determine whether a particular Maher found elsewhere was related is, as you can imagine, a challenge. Usually the certificates contain the name of the cemetery. Jamaica is much smaller then it was in 1868. Jamaica was both a Town and a Village before being incorporated into New York City in 1898. Also, much of the area that corresponded to the village or the town is still listed under the Jamaica post office and therefore mail may be addressed to Jamaica instead of let's say Richmond Hill. Add to all this, Queens County as a great deal of cemeteries. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't have the SS-5 form in front of me, so pay whatever they state since you now have the number. That and the additonal address came from two paid membership sites. Since Calvary has the largest number of interred and Joseph was from Queens, I'd lean toward calling them first. Other readers from Rockaway may have other suggestions. When you find many deaths for people of the same name, you need to eliminate by age and location. It also helps to find your subjects in census and city directories. And I don't think you asked for this, but the 1892 death -- if it was recorded -- would be in the New Utrecht town registers. The IGG has them indexed here, but I don't find mcready or mccready. I had already searched the census records - that is where I found the small family in Borough of Queens, New York City, New York. You mention a Birth index film - where is it? Thanks, Maureen.
Hi Maureen, What census years did you find them living in what county? Ancestry has a birth index cor NY & BKLN does 1891-1901, which does not comply with your dates. If the children were born in NY County, the birth index and certificate films are at the NYC Municipal Archives and may be searched in person. Since you are outside of the USA, please note that the county in NYS is the most vital piece for locating all vital records.
