    3. Bill I have Scottish ancestors (WADDELL), Bohemian ancestors (BLAUSTERN), German ancestors (LIEBRECHT/LEBRECHT) and Prussian ancestors (DAVIES, although I doubt that was their original surname -- they "stopped over" in England for a few years before coming to the US). In each case, I have a timeframe where they would have immigrated but they're all spans of several years, which makes it too time consuming and too expensive to rent NARA films. Lisa

    1. Question re: Passenger list -- can't read
    2. Lisa J. Thompson
    3. There's a column on a passenger list that I can't read. It's from 1885. The column reads "The country of which they are [undecipherable]". It's not the country of their birth because there's a column marked "Native Country". I need to know what the column reads. I think I've found my wandering WADDELLs yet again but the father's entry reads Scotland, the mother's reads England and the child's reads Canada. (All are too early for Ellis, unfortunately.) I have noticed that the 2 records I found that I think are matches are both horrendously transcribed. (I do volunteer transcription for FreeBMD so I do appreciate how hard it is but I also would never get away with such shoddy transcription.) For instance, "Mrs. M. I'll grant them that the "ob" in Robert are almost invisible and could be mistaken as R.D. but he is clearly marked M for male and is travelling with his wife! One other question -- my WADDELLs were in Newark, NJ (late 1860's) before returning to Scotland and later returning to the US to settle in Maspeth (ca. 1900). 1. Ellis Island searches with no first name
    2. Diane Jacobs
    3. Those of you who are still using the ellisisland.org site directly to perform your searches may have discovered that they no longer permit searches with no first name. That is indeed a step backwards for genealogists. It means we can no longer find potential relatives by searching on just the surname. What ever were they thinking when they made this change. Thankfully, we still have Steve Morse. If you do searches from any of his searchforms, even the white form which links directly to the ellisisland.org search engine, you can still omit the first name. I don't know how he is able to do it now that the ellisisland.org site has change, but I am grateful that he can. His search forms are at http://stevemorse.org and you should address any question and/or comments about them to him and not to me. Diane Jacobs New York

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1265.2.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Agree.... but I would be more trustful of a month and year of a child's birth on the Census, then some other "facts" put down for adults. I don't want to prolong this thread. My point is that assumptions in Genealogy can often lead people down wrong avenues. Case in point: where Mary Stempf who died in Florida was born. I'm basing this on a search on Mary Stempf on Ancestry...and looking at the Social Security Death Index and the Florida Death Index. I'm assuming that Virginia is looking at the same resources as I am. If she is, then Virginia is making an assumption, and in most cases it's true....that "Florida" Mary was born in New York. However, all the Social Security Death Index shows is that her number was issued in New York. She could have been born anywhere, and was in New York when she applied. Although Mary Stempf is probably an uncommon name, there are 3 such people on the Social Security Death Index, and therefore probably a lot more people in the U.S. at the time with that name. I would advise our original poster to try to get Mary's Florida death certificate which may show her maiden name, or go after Mary's social security application which will show Mary's maiden name. Also go after any obituary that might have been posted for Mary to get some idea of the rest of the family. Perhaps the obituary should be the first priority, as it may rule out Mary as a "Hand." It might also be the cheaper route to take.

    1. NEW YORK STATE CENSUS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
    2. Please help so that we can expedite this project. Thanks Marie A project is currently underway to create an online street index of the 5 New York City boroughs for the New York State census (1905, 1915, 1925). Street indexes for Manhattan 1915 and Brooklyn 1915 are already online at the One-Step website, http://www.stevemorse.org. The next phase of this project is Manhattan 1905, Bronx 1905 and Manhattan 1925. These online street indexes will be created from the existing New York County 1905/1915/1925 street index microfilms. The microfilmed index cards are being digitized first, then the digital images will be provided to volunteers for transcription and data entry. Several volunteers are currently needed to help complete the digitizing of the street index microfilms. Those interested will need access to a library that has the microfilms onsite (or can be brought onsite, such as at a Family History Center), as well as a digital microfilm scanner or other device that can make digital images of the microfilm. If you're interested in volunteering to digitize and you have access to both the films and digital imaging equipment, please contact Elise Friedman at nycensus@comcast.net Check http://www.stevemorse.org often for additional volunteer opportunities and updates to the New York State Census street indexes, as well as the many other resources available on the One-Step website.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1265.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Michael, It is said that you need two independent documents to establish a genealogical fact. If the proposal is that the Michael and Anna Hand family in 1900 in Brooklyn (ED 200) are the parents of your John Francis, then you should consider the following. You indicated that John Francis was born 1911-1913. The John on the 1900 census was born in March of 1900. You indicated the Mary Stempf was John Francis's sister. The previous poster said she was born in 1896 and was four years old in 1900. The 1900 census shows her being born in August of 1894 and was on enumeration day (June 1, 1900) 5 years old.. The previous poster indicated Mary had died in Florida in 1975. Now the Social Security Death Index shows a Mary Stempf who died in August of 1975 and who was born on 22 November of 1896. This is the wrong month and year of birth based on the 1900 Census. In addition, Ancestry has a database of Florida deaths, and it shows one Mary Stempf who died in Dade County in August of 1975, and it shows she was born on 22 November 1898. So I think 22 November is probably right for this individual...but the year is in question. The 1900 Census was the only one that asked for the month of birth of an individual...and that information conflicts for Mary of Florida. There is an expression that genealogists irritate the living and confuse the dead. There are enough problems with the 1900 Michael and Anna Hand family to cast some doubt on any link to your target person. That doesn't mean it isn't the family, but you need more pieces of the puzzle. Perhaps you can go after Mary's death certificate and see who the witnesses were. Perhaps there is an obituary for her and you might learn if there are living siblings. Joel Weintraub

    3. I received this from one of the other list administrators. It is taken from a recent Rootsweb Review and seems important enough to bring to the attention of all of us who take our "hobby" seriously. Larry -----Original Message----- From: Pat Mount [mailto:pmount@nre.umass.edu] Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2004 4:37 PM To: NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NJMON] New FEDERAL Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists Breaking my own rules, I felt this important enough to forward to the list! >From Rootsweb Review today - New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2--Improved Security for Birth Certificates. ==== NJMONMOU Mailing List ==== Monmouth County Archives http://www.visitmonmouth.com/archives/index.asp ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers.
