While cleaning today, I moved some storage boxes and found some documents that had fallen behind them. In 1985, I had written to the Commissioner of Finance asking for help in documenting transfer of ownership of properties my great grandfather James Gallagher bought back in the 1800's in the Hunters Point section of what we now know as Long Island City. I was particularly interested in one property....located on 8th St. and Vernon Blvd. It later became known as 4629 Vernon Boulevard. It is a long story about swindling etc. that has always had me so interested in the property. I also made some handwritten notes that no longer mean anything to me. I might have checked records at an LDS Library. Apparently they sent me photo copies of the following: This document is undated but as it shows my great grandfather as owner it had to be before or around the time of his death which was 1902. It does not give house numbers. Perhaps someone will find the other names interesting. If you want more information, please let me know. The Sutphin courthouse is located between 88th & 89th Aves. Tel. is 718/520-5051 If there was no will, there may be an administration file. 1983 records are in the card index located in the Record Room and the files themselves for that year have been microfiched. If you are not local, the Mormons have the Queens County indexes thru 1986 in their collection and you can order the index from your most convenient LDS Family History Center to see if there is actually a file at the court. The index will provide a case file number, needed by the court's staff to retrieve records. If you are going in person to the court, bring photo ID and plenty of nickels & dimes for the photocopy machines if you are reviewing paper files. Prints from the microfiche reader-printers may still be free if you are using microfiche files.

I know that she is buried in Section 012, Range N Grave No. 050. I had sent to Catholic Cemeteries for the info, but when they replied, their charges gave me pause. Would anyone in this area be willing to check the headstones for me? I am hoping that her parents might be buried close by. Also, don't know when William McBride (husband's G Grandfather) died, so to find that information will help me with death cert. I would of course, be willing to pay for the time. Thank you. I found out that you can search on Ancestry without a surname - even without any name at all. I used this to discover the brother of my g-g-g-grandfather. I knew that Philip married his wife Hellen in St. Louis in 1863 and lived there until his death in 1880. It was reasonable to find him there in 1870 and possibly 1860, but never had any luck finding him. I searched the 1870 census on the following for his wife: First name: Hellen Residence: Missouri Birthplace: Mississippi That was enough unique info to come up with just 2 hits, one of which was my Hellen. It also proved to me once again that surnames were too often completely mangled by census takers. Philip's surname was Blaustern, but he usually went by the English translation of Bluestar. The family is listed in 1870 as Brewster and Philip is single and listed as Brewsten in 1860. I never would have come up with BREWSTER or BREWSTEN as derivatives of my BLAUSTERN/BLAUSTEIN/BLAUSTEN surname. If only this trick would work with my hidden Henry/Heinrich and Issabella Leibrecht/Lebright! I know they were in NYC in 1870 and had at least 2 children by then but I can't find them no matter how hard I search. I did get a chuckle last night when I found a Henry ELVES. The name goes nicely with his occupation (same as my Henry -- a shoemaker) but I really don't think that ELVES is a very German surname. ;-) Lisa * * * * Lisa Thompson researching: BLAUSTERN/BLAUSTEIN/BLAUSTEN in Manhattan & Maspeth DAVIS in Manhattan WADDELL in NJ, Brooklyn and Maspeth LEIBRECHT/LEBRECHT/LEBRIGHT in Manhattan & Maspeth and hoping to one day find Mary and/or Georgina MURRAY in NYC/NJ -- anywhere!!!!

I think many of you will be interested in reading the following message. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net _____ From: James Haas [mailto:jehaas@comcast.net] Sent: Monday, December 27, 2004 9:27 AM To: evc1369@comcast.net Subject: Book on Astoria Dear Ms. Cardinal, Read your note on the new book and decided to tell you about two others, written not about Astoria, but about the nearby town of College Point. The first is titled "This Gunner at His Piece" College Point New York & the Civil War with Biographies of the Men Who Served. There is much of both Civil War and genealogical interest in these pages, especially if your German ancestry happens to have a connection to Queens. The second is titled Conrad Poppenhusen: The Life of a German-American Industrial Pioneer and tells the story of the man who thanks to his rubber factory gave employment to many of the townspeople and actually put it on the map. Since I do not view the Queens Rootsweb site as a marketing tool, I have never promoted my own material there, but also since I have read your frequent notes, I thought you might like to know about the books. If interested you can go to www.jimhaasbooks.com <http://www.jimhaasbooks.com/> to learn more about the two works that have gotten good critical reviews. Happy New Year Jim Haas
