I have just spent hours in a great Northern New York Genealogy site, but did find the location of gravesites for my Seamans. Have you found any yet?. 1. Howard Jensen's Finding Aid for the 1890 New York City, New York Police Census
    2. Tom Gregory
    3. Finding Aid for the 1890 New York City, New York Police Census There's a finding aid of great value for those who had relatives/ancestors in New York County in 1890 (what is in 2005- Manhattan and the western Bronx and the Islands in the East River.) I am not connected to the product nor related to its author in any way except as a very satisfied user. As is well known, most of the 1890 regular federal census- except for the enumeration of Civil War Vets- does not exist. In 1890, New York City, feeling that it had been very under counted by the federal census takers, had its police force do a recount. (The 1890 Police census began on 29 September and was mostly completed by 14 October.) 894 of 1008 books of this recount are extant and are on 59 rolls of microfilm at the FHL (beginning FHL 1304777 ), NYC Archives, and various NYC libraries . This police census gives name, age, and gender. It does not indicate relationship, but in the instances I have checked families are listed together. To find someone in this census it is necessary to use a New York City directory ending 1 May 1891 (FHL 1377197), or if a name was not listed in that directory- the directory ending 1 May1890 to locate the family's address, and then you were required to go thru a very convoluted process to try to identify possible films that a particular address MIGHT be on. The address could be in one of many "books" on one of those films. IF you identified the possible rolls correctly, after checking the possible rolls, the worst case scenario was that the book did not exist for the address you sought. The book Aid to Finding Addresses in The 1890 New York City Police Census compiled by Howard Jensen, and published by Heritage Books (December, 2003) indicates the exact FHL film and the exact book on that film where the address appears. If the address is not listed, it is not on an existing film. Knowing only the street name may require searching several microfilms and books, depending on how long the street was. Mr. Jensen is a respected contributor/ member of the NYC Rootsweb mailing list, and is the source of the some 20,000 names from the 1890 NYC Police Census found at Ancestry.com (According to Mr. Jensen, over one million seven hundred thousand names were listed in the original 1008 books) Cost is $35 plus postage. 2003, 5½ x 8½, paper, 282 pp., Heritage Book id: J0880, ISBN: 1-58549-880-7 http://marketplacesolutions.net/secure/heritagebooks/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HBI&Product_Code=J0880

Surnames: Clark, Clarke, Neville, Langford, Windhurst Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1290 Message Board Post: Upon the recent deaths of Mary Ann and Catherine Ann Clark, I received two large, framed portraits of what are believed to be their paternal grandparents, Michael Francis Clarke and Mary Neville Clark (Clarke), along with other documents that may be of interest to Michael & Mary’s descendants. The following is a synopsis of what information I have about the family: Mary Ann and Catherine’s father, Matthew Francis Clark(e), was born in New York City on July 2, 1877 and died on May 24, 1966 in Kinderhook, NY. Matthew was married to Mary Navom Clark on September 4, 1922 in Stuyvesant Falls, NY. Matthew Francis Clark(e) was reportedly one of eight children born to Michael F. and Mary N. Clark(e). The other known children are Polly Clarke (died May 14, 1873 at age 2); Mary Clarke (died May 15, 1895 at age 2 years 6 months); and according to Mary Ann Clark, Rose Clark Langford. John Clarke purchased a grave in Calvary Cemetery on May 14, 1873 presumably for Polly Clarke. Photos from the mid 1930’s include John Windhurst, “a cousin visiting from the Bronx.” If you are directly related to Michael and Mary Clark(e), please contact me so that I can arrange to provide you with the items I have concerning the family. 3. Brian 1. I'm sure someone else will have a more exact answer, but before Queens was incoporated in 1898, I think where the records are held depends on where in Queens the event occurred. I found 1890's Maspeth birth records in Newtown town registers. I discovered this by searching for Maspeth records on familysearch.org. You may want to try that, too. 2. NARA has passenger lists for this time period. However, they're mostly unindexed -- you'd have to know a specific date. Lisa

Stephen Henry Mott was prob from the Lynbrook, Valley Stream or Hempstead area. My Mother said Sarah andd James were from Connecticut but I think she may have meant they sailed across Long Island sound possibly as revolutionary war people but this last bit is only conjecture. 1. Queens Vital Records
    2. Brian Smith
    3. Hi: Posted the query below last night and have received several good leads. Many Thanks to those who responded. As any good genealogist knows, answers generally lead to more questions and I have several: 1. Who would hold Queens Birth, Marriage and Death records for the period 1860-1890 2. Who would hold immigration records for the 1858-1860 timeframe (Ireland to US) Thanks in advance, Brian My first post to this list. I am searching for the parents of Peter Quinn, born Queens NY, Jul 1860. He married Emma (?) Quinn circa 1884 and they had two children, Mary Quinn (1885-?) and Charles F. Quinn (1887-1949). In the 1900 Census, Peter's mother Mary ( born Ireland 1842- aft. 1900) is living with them. Although the 1900 Census indicates that Peter's mother Mary, came to the US in 1859, can find no record of her in the 1880 Census. Visited the NYC Vital Records Web site and it appears that records for Queens during this timeframe are limited. Any help appreciated!

    3. Mary: Many Thanks for taking the time to look that up. I found that same record sometime ago and it could be the right one. Only one difference, in the 1900 Census, her age was listed as 58 making her birthyear circa 1842. In the 1880 Census, the Mary Quinn listed gives her age as 45, making her birthyear circa 1835, a 7 year difference. I know Census takers make mistakes and people aren't always truthful but? Everything else matches, Peter's age and her birthplace, Ireland. 3. Hi Janet: All land records prior to consolidation of Queens into NYC and the subdivision of Nassau County, from Queens, in 1899 are in Queens. The basement also holds an unbelievable collection of antique maps as well as the original grantor/grantee indexes. Today this is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Finance of NYC and their website is: http://nyc.gov/html/dof/ The individual borough offices are listed at: http://nyc.gov/html/dof/html/email.html#register The most popular commercially produced maps are the 1873 Beers maps, which is a bit later than the period you are looking for. Another resource that you might find helpful in the map area is the Clerk's Office for the Town of Hempstead. They will not have land records themselves but their archived collection of Town papers is amazing and indexed online at: http://www.townofhempstead.org/ Besides land records, you may find mention of your ancestor in the Town Records. Many deeds and mortgages were recorded at the Town Level (as Town Meeting minutes and other records) as well as the county level. What is the name of your ancestor and what, specific, time period(s) are you looking for? Good luck and best regards. Nancy. You will not find much in the early 19th century with the names of the property owners on a town or county map. If the family in at least some instances held the property for two or more generations, you may find the 1859 map useful. Possibly someone has this map posted on the internet - if not, the Queens Library has it, and possibly the L.I. Studies Institute at Hofstra University has Walling's map. Other large libraries, including the State Library at Albany, may also have it. The so-called Map of Property Owners, 1800, prepared by the Queens Topographical Bureau covers only the western towns of Queens County (Newtown, Jamaica, Flushing) and for the significant parcels it provides the deed references for land ownership circa 1800. E-mail me privately if you have any questions. George
