Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WUB.2ACI/1278.1.1.1 Message Board Post: If you got that far with the cemetery association, then you got WAY farther than I ever have! They just keep telling me that they need the date of interment for at least one person buried there before they can look it up. They only file by date of interment apparently. They don't seem to have ever heard of cross filing, let alone being willing to go out to the coordinates given to find who is buried there (or do a look up with the records for that coordinate given). However, someone was kind enough to volunteer to take a photo of the headstone for me (of my grandparents graves). When she sent me the photo, it showed Joseph D. Johnston instead of John and Beatrice McKee. That's when I called the association back and demanded to know what they did with my grands! I wanted to know who they dumped them in with etc. She then looked up the records and said yes, The McKee's ARE buried there with Joseph. That was either a 4 or 6 person lot. That was when it dawned on me that Joseph was Beatrice's brother (whom I'd not found info on until then). The lady then proceeded to give me a date of death (or perhaps it was interment). The only headstone was the one for Joseph. It had not mentioned the grands names at all, which was why I was getting upset. Considering that I am sure I came off sounding indignant, the lady was good enough to look the records up for me! There was no charge btw...and this has been within the past 2 or 3 yrs or so! . However, again, you DO have to have at least one date of interment (which is silly because if I had that, I'd know close enough to when they died, then I could send for the death certificate!). Anyway, good luck cause I think you'll need it! Perhaps you can find a volunteer to go take a photo of the graves for you? ouizee

Surnames: McKee, Johnston, Taggert/Taggart, Catherwood, Singleton, Reynolds, Trout/Troutt/Traut/Trautt, Ferguson, Earl/Earle/Earles/Earls, Perdue, Boyd, Reed, Read, Wood or Woods, and an entire slew full of names I've yet to discover! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WUB.2ACI/1309 Message Board Post: Does anyone do birth look ups for Manhattan? I need one for both Catherine McKee, born NY ca 1872 and Ann, born NY ca 1874. Their mother was Jane McKee. By the 1880 census she was a 47 yr old widow originally from Ireland (don't know which part of Ireland though). She was living with her sons, William, 22 and Joseph A. 19 (my great grandfather), and her daughters: Theresa, 15, born Ireland ca 1865 Alice, 12, born Ireland ca 1868 Catherine, 8, born NY ca 1872 Ann, 6, born NY ca 1874 Since Jane was a widow in the 1880 census, we still do not know who her husband was. IF I could get a copy of at least one of the two youngest girls' birth certificate, or even ledger entry (or the info from it), I might then be able to determine who her husband was. I might even determine Jane's maiden name. I realize it's a long shot, but it's the only avenue I can think of left to me to try. This has been one of my biggest brick walls! The 1870 census would not help either, even if it did list the wife's name. I have reason to think they did not come to America until 1872, shortly before the birth of Catherine. I also suspect her husband may have died in 1880, which could be why her youngest son, Joseph came over in 1880 (of course I have no clue why he was left behind either!). Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Oh how I wish I had been interested in all this when I was 15 yrs. old and living in Queens! It would have been osomuch easier for me to do ! the research myself! I simply am not able to make a trip there to do this myself. Anyway, thanks. ouizee

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1307.1.1 Message Board Post: Manhattan is not a county: Manhattan is a borough, one of the 5 boroughs or administrative districts of New York City, and it is coterminous with New York County, a political sub-division of New York State, and one of the 5 counties that are coterminous with New York City. Today, NYC includes 5 boroughs (administrative districts of New York City) that are coterminous with 5 counties (political sub-divisions of New York State); and, simultaneously, NYC is also coterminous with 7+ postal cities. But, this wasn't always the case ... For a full explanation of the idiosyncrasies of the geography and governmental organization of New York City, read on: Downstate New York State has its own special geography ... where things can be a bit confusing to outsiders as well as to long time residents. Beginning on November 1, 1683, the City and County of New York included only the Island of Manhattan (and a few small islands in the East River). Then in 1873, the City and County of New York annexed the "western" Bronx (the area west of the Bronx River and south of the City of Yonkers) from Westchester County. This was followed in 1895, when the City and County of New York annexed the "eastern" Bronx from Westchester County as well. There is a small change on June 15, 1886 when the Lloyd's Neck peninsula is transferred from the Town of Oyster Bay, then in Queens County to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County. The big change comes in 1898, when the City and County of New York, the City of Brooklyn/Kings County, Richmond County (Staten Island) and the western-quarter of Queens County (the City of Long Island City, the Towns of Newtown, Flushing and Jamaica and the Rockaway peninsula of the Town of Hempstead) are consolidated into the new New York City. On January 1, 1899, as the eastern three-quarters of Queens secede and form Nassau County, the Rockaway peninsula of the Town of Hempstead remains behind as part of Queens. Then in 1914, the Bronx County separates from New York County. (Thus, for 16 years, from 1898 to 1914, New York City was made up of 5 boroughs, but only 4 counties.) Simultaneous to these changes, in 1851, Kings County consists of 2 cities (Brooklyn and Williamsburgh) and 6 towns (Bushwick, Flatbush, Flatlands, Gravesend, New Lots and New Utrecht). In 1854, the City of Brooklyn annexes the City of Williamsburgh and the Town of Bushwick; in 1886, the City of Brooklyn annexes the Town of New Lots; in 1894, the City of Brooklyn annexes the Towns of Flatbush, New Utrecht and Gravesend; and, in 1896, the City of Brooklyn annexes the Town of Flatlands and becomes coterminous with King County. Now, to make this even more complicated, the U.S. Postal Service has divided the City of New York into 7+ postal cities: New York (covers Manhattan and the Bronx), Staten Island, Brooklyn (covers most of Brooklyn and parts of northwest and southwest Queens), Long Island City (most of the original Town of Newtown in Queens), Flushing (includes all of the original Town of Flushing and parts of the Town of Newtown in Queens and also part of what was Town of Bushwick in Brooklyn), Jamaica (most of the original Town of Jamaica in Queens and a small area in what was the East New York section of the Town of New Lots in Brooklyn) and Far Rockaway (in Queens). (Additionally, a few small areas in the Bronx are serviced by post offices located in Westchester County and hence have "Westchester" mailing addresses, such as "Yonkers, NY", "Pelham Manor, NY", etc.) Lastly, but not last by any means, New York City is divided into 5 boroughs (city administrative districts) and 5 vestigial counties (sub-divisions of New York State) as: .....Borough............County .....Manhattan.........New York .....Staten Island.....Richmond .....Brooklyn...........Kings .....the Bronx.........the Bronx .....Queens............Queens A more detailed geography of NYC follows my name. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan The following detailed geography was derived from information in an eMail sent by Nancy Coleman (ncroots@worldnet.att.net) to "NYC-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com" on January 17, 2000. The Bronx County/Borough the only part of NYC that is on the mainland, is a peninsula, north of Manhattan, separated from Manhattan Island by the Spuyten Duyvil Creek and the Harlem River. Also includes North Brother Island, South Brother Island, Riker's Island, City Island, Hart Island, and numerous other small islands in the Long Island Sound. It is bordered to its north by Westchester County. Kings County/Borough of Brooklyn is the westernmost part of Long Island and it is bordered on the northeast by Queens County/Borough and includes many sanctuary islands in Jamaica Bay, to its southeast. It is bordered to its south by the Rockaway Inlet, the Atlantic Ocean, Gravesend Bay, Lower NY Bay, and to its west, Upper New York Bay and the East River. New York County/Borough of Manhattan: is an island, bordered on the West by the Hudson (aka North) River, the east by the East River and the Harlem River, and on the north by the Spuyten Duyvil Creek and the Harlem River. Also includes Roosevelt Island, Governors Island, and Randalls/Wards Island, as well as Ellis and Liberty Islands. Queens County/Borough is on Long Island and includes the Rockaway Peninsula, and many islands within Jamaica Bay. Most of its islands are a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area (National Park Service) and are wildlife refuges and bird sanctuaries. Broad Channel being the exception, which is residential. Queens runs the entire width of Long Island with the East River and Long Island Sound to the north, Kings County/Borough of Brooklyn to its southwest, Nassau County to its east, and Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to its south. Richmond County/Borough of Staten Island is an island, lying south of Manhattan Island, bordered by New Jersey to its west (separated by the Arthur Kill), NJ to its north (separated by the Kill Van Kull), Upper NY Bay to its east, and Lower NY Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to its south. Also includes Shooter's Island, Prall's Island, and Island of Meadow - all of which are bird sanctuaries. Also, to its south, are Hoffman Island and Swinburn Island which are part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, administered by the US National Park Service.

While a part of Setauket was, for a short time, referred to as "Newtown", the only "Newtown Creek", as far as can be determined, was along the Queens/Kings County border. Good luck. Walter Greenspan

    1. Newtown Creek
    2. Here's my second follow-up to the discussion about Newtown Creek in the 1600s as originally posted on 2/3/05 (1:11:32 PM MST), in a posting to NY-LONGISLAND-L@rootsweb.com, wherein Terri (taire@webtv.net) asked, "Wondering if anyone can enlighten me concerning Newton Creek, LI. Apparently, it existed back in the 1660's." I am the beneficiary of a very interesting eMail from Ned Smith (ehlsmith@worldnet.att.net) fleshing out and placing the information that he posted in March 2002, and that I previously quoted in my first follow-up, in proper context . Ned writes, "I am certain the reference to Newton Creek in the 1660s pertains to Newtown Creek between Kings & Queens. Newtown was often spelled Newton in old records." Note: Setauket is in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north west-of-center part of Suffolk County Ned continues, "I have never seen any reference in the early records to a creek in the Newtown area of Setauket -- Newtown Swamp, yes; Newtown Creek, no. Anyway, there could not have been one there in the 1600s. At the time creek still carried its original English meaning of a small, saltwater tidal channel, such as Newtown Creek between Kings & Queens. It would not have been used for a brook or other freshwater stream, and the Newton area in Brookhaven was inland, with no salt water channels." Ned concludes, "The Newtown area of Southampton did not receive its name until long after the 1600s; probably late 19th or early 20th century." Thanks Ned. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan
