Also, for the younger list members, the date of deaths for their great grandparents may be so relatively recent as to merit continued privacy. However, for those interested in demographics in general and average lifespan of ethnic groups in particular vast amounts of data as been collected over time by many agencies (try a google search or ask your local librarian) When the Social Security administration formulated their program (effective in 1936) and set the benefit age at 65 it was in the expectation that most beneficiaries would not live more than a couple of years beyond that, whereas the life expectancy of a baby girl born today exceeds 80 years. Advances in life expectancy have escalated in the most recent three decades. For folks born in 1880 Living into their late 60s would be an average or better life span. GMcC

    1. Curious about life spans of IRISH ancestors
    2. I'd like to start a thread which will answer several questions that most of us who are rather new might have. Here is the question -- "How long did your IRISH great-grandparents live to be?". Mine only lived into their late 60's, which in my opinion is way too short, and I would like to know why. How long did yours live to be, and why? What diseases/illinesses did they have? Please give full names, birth/death dates, last place lived, age at onset of disease, cause of death/age at death, and where buried. This range of questions might give clues to other newbies like me. Here's mine: JAMES JOSEPH RYAN, 6/16/1880 -- 12/11/1948, Woodhaven, Queens, NY - died of blood poisoning, & stroke at the age of 68, was age 67 when the blood poisoning struck. Buried at St. John's Cemetery in Queens, NY. 3. Someone at Calvary told me a few years ago, they were going to computerize their records. Does anyone know if they have started? No question that it would be a monumental task with more than a million people buried there but someday those ledger books are going to disintegrate especially the oldest of them. While the catholic church can be difficult to work with, especially the Arch Diocese of New York, it could be a lucrative project for them and a rewarding one for us. Elizabeth V. 3. Ouiz, Calvary is the only cemetery I know of that keeps their records by date. It is a pain. It took me 3 years to find a grave with them. My grandmothers family is named Liuni. It is usually misspelled in one form or another. I didn't have the dates of my GGP death but one day I stumbled across a death certificate for a Philomena Leone in Queens. My GGM was Filomena Liuni. By luck it happened to be her and I visited Calvary. Once there they were very helpful (I can't say they were as helpful over the phone). I asked if they could tell me who else was in the grave and the women pulled out a large ledger book from underneath the counter and looked it up there. She gave me 8 names and didn't charge me for the information. Stefanie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. Joan, Wait a week and call them again, perhaps you will get a different Clerk to help. And Perhaps, they have his name spelt differently Than what is on the death cert. Or if they are looking at computer Lists, ask them to check their old card or book system as I have Done all these things when told someone was not there and lo and Behold , they were found. I have had people not put on computer Lists, also told they were not there and then called again and They were found, etc. Diane Jacobs New York Subject: [QUEENS] Re: queens ny cemeteries This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 2. Our local FHC has had free access to all of Ancestry.com for more than two years. I am told that they pay a small monthly fee. Likely the LDS Church pays a good sum to have it available. Some FHC's charge fifty cents or a dollar an hour to use it I have heard. Different areas haw different budgets and they do the best they can with that money. Sharon I'm lucky to have it at home and can use it day or night, but if I didn't I would be at the FHC on a more regular basis.

    2. Let me add to the discussion... You are correct about Calvary Cemetery -- very difficult to get quick infomation from them. St. John's, however, recently computerized -- something they don't seem to publicize. I was there yesterday about my 3 adjoining family graves. I was greeted by a VERY nice receptionist, who pulled up my information in the computer by plot # and read to me the names of the 5 people buried there. However, she was quickly interrupted by a supervisor who then insisted I pay $60 (and wait 6 to 8 weeks) for written confirmation of the data on the graves. That's how these cemeteries make money to survive these days!

My problem is, I have the plot, row and range #'s but not the dates of death at all. In fact, I'm not even sure now WHICH side of the family is buried in Calvary! My dad's aunt always said the McKee's were buried in St. John's and the Johnstons at Calvary or vice versa. However, Grampa McKee (her dad) and his wife, Beatrice Mae (Johnston) McKee and her brother, Joseph D. Johnston are all 3 buried together at St. Johns. And the plot, row and range #'s my aunt gave me were definitely NOT for St. Johns! Makes for a sticky wicket, huh? :) ouiz

    3. Major WHOOPS! I meant to say that I was told that FHCs *were* going to have free access to the ancestry.com databases. (I'm guessing it will be something similar to the library edition of ancestry.com..) My library just started offering the library edition of ancestry.com after offering Heritage Quest for the past 2 years or so -- maybe ancestry.com is expanding their free access? I need to find a dir. listing of Queens for mid to late 1980's to confirm correct spelling of name and other things. Also I need to make a trip to the cemetery to get a grid layout of the section in question which has no headstones, sec. 14 on the service road next to the LIE .... the area is about 75x 40. I tried giving them the row, plot information etc. and they replied that they don't file it that way. They ONLY file by the date of interment...and neither they nor St. John's seem to have heard of cross filing alphabetically or by range, row and plot number! However, I did find a kind soul who went to St. John's and looked things up herself and finally found where my grands were buried. She took a photo of the grave site, but unfortunately the only name there on the stone was that of my great uncle, Joseph D. Johnston. That's when I called and the lady at the cemetery association looked up Joseph's information and found that yes, my grands were indeed buried there...and gave me the date of interment for my grandmother, which I needed desperately. ! Good luck! ouizee
