    1. Mount. Olivet - WADDELL
    2. Lisa J. Thompson
    3. Does anyone here ever visit Mt. Olivet cemetary? I am interested in having someone take a picture for me. There is a WADDELL memorial at grave #195 in the Hawthorn section. The names should be William and Carrie (Caroline) Waddell, but there may also be Mildred or possibly other WADDELLs. It will have lillies on it. If you can go and take a photo of the stone for me, please let me know. I am willing to pay towards gas/film/developing. Thanks Lisa * * * * Lisa Thompson Columbia, MO researching WADDELL, LEBRECHT/LEBRIGHT, DAVIS, BLAUSTEN, WOLTERS, HERSEY all in Queens around 1900 or a little later

    2. Hi Cathy, My maternal grandparents, who have the last name of MCCARTHY are buried in a plot at Linden Hill Methodist Cemetery in Ridgewood, NY, and there was always a big tall gravestone on the plot with the name SCHNEIDER on it, next to my grandparents' smaller flat stone. My mother and I always wondered who SCHNEIDER was -- then I got the map of the entire plot, and discovered through a bit more research that SCHNEIDER was the married surname of my great-grandmother's sister (who was the original plot holder, and as a widow in 1926 had either been murdered, or had committed suicide. I am in currently in the process of asking the Municipal Archives if they have any further info on her case, as I was told by another researcher that those records are located there). So the SCHNEIDER name turned out to be a relative of mine after all. So GAFFNEY could be a relative of yours in some way, maybe through marriage. Of course it's possible that the person wasn't related to your family, and there is some other explanation...I'm just informing you of my own experience. Good luck in your research, Karen RosAngel247@verizon.net > A few months ago SKS went into St. John's Cemetery in Woodhaven, Queens, NY > and took a picture for me of the headstone of my great-grandfather, JAMES > JOSEPH THOMAS RYAN, 1880 - 1947. After reviewing the information on Death Certificates I totally agree with you. The official web site states you just need to be a relative. So I'm going to give it a try. My main decision there is whether she died in Queens or Brooklyn. My Aunt and Uncle were life long residents of Brooklyn. But, my Uncle's information states in the SS death index the last know location was Lynbrook, NY. He's buried in Long Island National Cemetery. I believe at the end of their lives they may have been put into a nursing home or homes. My Uncle was buried by his sister. So I'm assuming Ethel may have died before him not only because my uncle was buried by his sister but also because Great Aunt Ethel was older than he. I've narrowed the time line of her death to 1967 to 1971. There is no family to speak to or ask questions. Most of the family is deceased. My Grandmother was Catholic (Ethel's sister). My father and his siblings were raised Catholic as was I was when I was young. But I have no proof Ethel was. Not to mention if she was buried by her sister in law I don't know if they would have worried about religion when burying her. Thank you for your time and help Yvonne

    3. The Gaffneys may have been some distant relation, in law or just friends. Can you tell who was buried first? Who bought the plot ...that might give you some clues. You may want to contact the cemetery for a list of who is interned in that grave and/or send for their death certificates....again they may answer your question or offer up clues. Elizabeth V. 2. A few months ago SKS went into St. John's Cemetery in Woodhaven, Queens, NY and took a picture for me of the headstone of my great-grandfather, JAMES JOSEPH THOMAS RYAN, 1880 - 1947. However, when I received the picture, it showed the name GAFFNEY on the headstone, with my great-grandfather's name under that, and with his parents names, PATRICK RYAN & ELLA (ELIZABETH) RYAN under his name. Here is my question -- who is GAFFNEY? There were no Gaffney's in our family. Could they have been sponsors for my great-great-grandparents, when they traveled from Ireland to USA? If you would like a copy of the photo, I will be glad to upload it to you offline. It is both Norton & and Panda scanned. I have request and receive several and just say that the person is my aunt or uncle. You should also request a genealogy copy which doesn't have the official seal on it but all the information that you need. The cost is $22 per certificate. My experience with getting information from cemeteries in New York has not been good. I too live out of state and when I call am informated that it will cost money to receive that information or they just plain will not help you. Try a site called Random Acts of Kindness and see if you can get a volunteer to help you out. This is of course is when you receive the information that you are searching. Remember too that your aunt can be buried in religious cemetery too. You have not given any vital information but if you use www.rootsweb.com and go into New York and than Queens they have a good site for information there. Hope some of this will help you out.

I wanted to know what the largest and or most popular cemeteries there are in Queens Co.? I'm thinking specifically Flushing. I've seen listings for the local cemeteries online but it's not the same. I can't actually make an assessment. I live in Wisconsin so I have no clue where to look. I'm trying to locate my Aunt's place of burial. I cannot get her death certificate as I'm not in her direct line. She had no children. Her husband died in 1972 and is buried in the national cemetery in Farmingdale but she is not! I think she died before him. Thank You for any help. Yvonne

    2. To all of you that responded to my trouble concerning my grandmother Margarete HAUSS' place of birth, and how I might get her birth record...thank you so much! I decided to go to the NYC Municipal Archives website, and have them search for her birth record through both Kings and Queens County, using the certificate number I have. I will be sure to let you all know what they find for me. Karen RosAngel247@verizon.net

They would charge you $3.25 per roll and you can have them for 43 days. If you go to www.familysearch.org and can find the nearest one to you. They are not available through interlibrary loan only through FHL. I have used them several times. Also you don't need a death certificate number if you know the date, month and year of death, just keep that in mind for the future. I that deaths are on microfilm at the New York Public Library. You can go to a website called Random Acts of Kindness and maybe someone can help you out this way. I think some of them charge and some don't. Hope this has been of some help.

New York but thus far have not been able to find her. I know for sure she was born in either 1901 or 1902 in Kings Co. Thanks anyways, your effort is greatly appreciated. Yvonne

    3. Are often difficult to obtain. Some churches consider the information confidential while others will only give a copy to a family member. Depending on the church and the year you are looking for, you may never receive an answer to a written query. There is usually a fee involved if you do not know the date...sometimes a fee is involved even when you do. And sad to say sometimes the church does not have the staff to do these lookups and even some who do, just don't want to do it. Elizabeth V.
