    2. Marilyn & Jeff Fannon
    3. I'm hoping that someone one the list can help me. I have a number of burials that state that the individual was either buried in Middle Village or disinterred from Middle Village. I have checked both St John's and Lutheran Cemeteries to see if they are or were buried there. No luck. I do know that a Methodist on Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village at one time had a churchyard cemetery. I have contacted them both by phone and in writing asking if they have any information and have yet to receive a reply. Does anyone know if there are any records for this cemetery or do you know of other cemeteries that existed in Middle Village. The time frame is 1850-1900. Marilyn

    3. I am trying to trace what has happened to the above family who were living in 25th Street, New York City, as shown on the 1930 Census. The above named (also known as Warwick WILLIAMS) was born 10 July 1869 in Brynsadler, Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales). He was a musician, playing in Sousa's Band. His wife was Theodosia WILLIS who he married in London 1895. Their children were: Ethel May (born 1897), Charles Richard (born1898), Doris Evelyn (born 1901) and Winifred Ann (born 1903), all born in London. I found another daughter born in the USA Patricia SLIE (born 1908), living with her parents at the time of the 1930 Census. She had a son, Louis SLIE (born around 1929). Her husband must have been living away, on the day this 1930 Census was taken. I know that Doris was working as a broadcaster and I have a photograph of her at work. William and his wife I know also, had three other grandchildren - Sonny, Rose and Dorothy. Contact with the family was lost prior to WWII. William Richard WILLIAMS was my grandmother's brother. I am wondering whether the foregoing might "ring any bells" with a! nyone reading this. Any help or suggestions as to how to further my research would be most welcome. Many thanks. Dilys

    1. Hospitals in 1929
    2. On 4/8/05 (7:58:02 PM MDT), in a posting to NYC-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com, Jan Foster (jfos@fosterswebsite.com) asked, "I know this is a bit "off" for the NYC-ROOTS list but... I am researching my maternal line and know that the family lived in the Flushing, NY area in 1929-1931. The birth certificate of one relative shows the birth occurred in Feb. of 1931 at Park East Hospital on 83rd Street in Manhattan. I am trying to obtain the birth certificate of a sibling to that relative, born in Jan. 1929. We recently submitted forms and fees to NYC to obtain a copy of a birth certificate for this person but none could be found. They indicated a search was done for the years 1928, 1929, and 1930 in all five boroughs. So now my question: It seems to me there must have been hospitals in the Flushing NY area where an expectant mother could go to deliver a baby and perhaps we should be looking there. Can anyone suggest the names of hospitals in the area that might have had maternity facilities in that time period?" Since January 1, 1898, Flushing has been a neighborhood in Queens and Queens has been a borough of New York City. (Additionally, since January 1, 1899, the Borough of Queens has been coterminous with the County of Queens.) Now, for a list of possible maternity hospitals or hospitals with maternity facilities, you may want to contact the Queens Borough Public Library: Queens Borough Public Library 89-11 Merrick Boulevard New York (Jamaica P.O.), NY 11432 Tel: 718/990-0700 Fax: 718/???-???? 1. court system
    2. On 4/5/05 (11:30:38 AM MST), in a posting to NYNEWYOR-L@rootsweb.com, ????? (kellen2000@juno.com) asked, "Could someone please explain the court system to me for NY County? I believe there are five boroughs within the county, so would each one have its own local court system? Besides Brooklyn and Manhattan, what are the other boroughs? What is the correct title of the borough-level court? Then, would the Supreme Court cover the entire county? I'm particularly interested in criminal court indexes for the time period of about 1903 through 1926." Currently, in addition to civil and criminal courts that are under the jurisdiction of New York City, each of the 5 counties that are coterminous with the 5 boroughs of NYC, have a Supreme Court, the lowest level of New York State court system, as well as x ounty level Surrogate's Court, etc., etc.. (In NYS, the top court is the Court of Appeals, with the Appeals Court below that and then the county level Supreme Court.) From 1898 to 1914, there were 5 boroughs but only 4 counties as the Boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx were then jointly coterminous with New York County. In 1914, the Bronx County seceded from New York County and since that date New York City is divided into 5 boroughs (city administrative districts) and 5 vestigial counties (sub-divisions of New York State) as: ......Borough............County ......Manhattan.........New York ......Staten Island.....Richmond ......Brooklyn...........Kings ......the Bronx.........the Bronx ......Queens............Queens For complete information on the organzization of the courts, please see: http://www.courts.state.ny.us/courts/ I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
