On 5/22/05 (8:23:49 PM MDT), in a posting to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Shannon (shstover@earthlink.net) asked, "I am researching the Hindra family that settled in Little Neck. Matus Hindra arrived in the US in 1909 and on the ship manifest he stated that he would be staying with a friend, Yacob Karovick. I've had trouble finding Mr. Karovick in the 1910 and no luck finding Matus either. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone familiar with these names? Would appreciate any help offered." Little Neck is a neighborhood in the northeast part of the NYC Borough of Queens (coterminous with Queens County), adjacent to the Nassau County line, but not in Nassau County. (I'm cross-posting to the Queens County RootsWeb mailing list.) For a neighborhood map of Queens, please go to: http://www.queenslibrary.org/gallery/past_exhibits/burgh/map.htm I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan
If I may ask, what is "Genealogy-In-A-Jar"? Thanks! -------Original Message------- From: Mary Thiele Fobian Date: 05/19/05 13:52:18 To: NYQUEENS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: clues on gravesites Cathy, I was interested to see your idea. Just this past weekend I met a 4th cousin I'd never known who called me when she found a genealogy-in-a-jar I left on her g-g-grandfather's grave. She was able to fill me in on the descendants in her line, and I was able to give her ancestral information she was unaware of. And we both were invited to tour an old home where her g-g-grandparents lived in the 1870s-1880s. Good luck with your laminated cards. Understandably, some cemeteries won't allow this sort of thing, but it's worth a try. CAnne16560@aol.com wrote:I don't know if any of you have tried this before or not. Since I am soon going to visit NYC and several cemeteries of my ancestors in Queens, the Bronx, Kings, and Bergen and others, I am going to design in advance of my trip some 3X5 cards with my name (not my real name), relationship to deceased, telephone number, and an email address. I am going to write it in indelible ink, and laminate it. Then I am going to secure it somehow on, at, or very near the gravesite. I'm thinking it might be a good way of finding cousins, friends, etc. Comments welcome - anyone?? Thanks to everyone who sent me their opinion on this mystery relative. I drummed up the courage to call the Public Administrator's office and they explained pretty much what everyone had said, that she probably died alone so the ME had to get involved to make sure the death was natural. They gave me the name and number of a lawyer that was in the record so I'm going to try to contact him on Monday. I really appreciate the time and advice that everyone gave me! Thanks again! Liz
Thank you to all of you who responded with helpful hints, directions, ideas, fees, directions, etc., for my upcoming visit to NYC. I've printed everything out and put together a little booklet of instructions and ideas to help me along the way. I may have some more questions you can help me with before I leave, I will be gone approx. 15-20 days. When I get back I will post my pics to a website detailing all my adventures with my son going to the Archives, Bureaus, Ellis Island, Cemeteries, Churches, my great-grandparents house, my childhood home, etc. I still have plenty of time before I leave, so if any of you have additional thoughts, feel free to send them on. Anytime someone dies who is not under the care of an M.D. an autopsy has to be performed to determine the cause of death. I received a list of internments from a grave in Calvary Cemetery. I found a woman buried in that grave, same surname, buried in 2002 at age 92. Here's where the mystery comes in: She died on April 1st but was buried on April 13th. I called the Funeral Home that handled the funeral and they tell me that the Public Administrator's office handled the burial. That the reason for the delay was that the body was sent to the Medical Examiner's office first. Hi, I also had a rewarding experience by checking with a Jewish cemetery Office and asking if their was a next of kin listed. I was told yes But they could not give me the address. I asked them if they would Mail a letter to this person if I wrote one. They said yes and I sat Down and wrote a letter right there and in three weeks I had my reply And found my husband's first cousins in California. Diane Jacobs Somerset, NJ Cathy, Some years ago while traveling in Wales, my wife and daughter visited the cemetery in the town from which her family came. They found the family gravesite which was obviously being visited and cared for on a regular basis. My wife left a note and a very brief family tree in a basket on the gravesite. About three weeks after they arrived home, my wife received a letter from a relative who had found the note. They have been communicating ever since. Another relative, since deceased was also writing. It added a whole family to our research. Now, if only I could be so lucky! There could be lots of reasons why a person of any age would be "handled" by the Medical Examiner's office. For example, she might have been the victim of a crime, abuse, negligence. I would definitely try to get an obituary lookup from a library in the jurisdiction where she lived at time of death. elizabethharen@aol.com wrote:So...why would a 92 year old woman have to be handled by the ME's office and what am I going to find if I call the Public Administrator's Office? ========================== Mary Thiele Fobian Genealogical & Historical Research Pacific Grove, California
