There would have been a large number of Catholic churches. Hi Brooke, Here's the address of what used to be the Neponsit Beach Hospital. I believe the building is still there in Neponsit, New York. Neponsit is a very small and beautiful residential section, maybe 10 or 15 blocks long, on the western end of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens County, New York. The hospital faces Rockaway Beach Bloulevard and backs up the the beach on the ocean side. I think the patients were lucky to have such a nice view and maybe even got to go onto the beach as well. I was born and brought up in Belle Harbor which is right next to Neponsit and my friends and I used to ride our bikes to Riis Park which is right next to the Neponsit Beach Hospital. I remember it well. I don't know where your Dr. Basil McLean lived but there are a few McLean families that still live in that area. Could be that they are related. Good luck with your search. It's summer vacation again, so I get to spend a few weeks back at genealogy research! Hoping to tie up some loose threads from the last time I subscribed to this list. I've been working on the line of George W KOBER and his wife Rose. Last time I found them was in the 1920 census for NYC Queens, in Woodhaven on 96th Street. Their household included Rose's mother, Anna KROUSE or KRAUSE (can't read handwriting). First, does anyone have access to the next state census (1925?) who could check that address (I think #729) and see if this family was still there? The tricky thing is that George's father lived around the block (he was also named George, but I think by then, he would have been too old to still be around), so that's something to watch for. I'd like to know if Geo and Rose are listed there in the 1925 census, or moved, or maybe died?? Second, is there any source for online index for either death certs for Queens, or index for obits published in a local Queens paper (not the NYT, I know our family wouldn't make it into the newsprint there). I am trying to locate when they died, especially Rose and Anna, as they are my blood line. The tricky thing is that family reports were that Rose was divorced, but I don't know if George was husband #1 or #2! Tricky item #2 is that Rose's brother, my grandfather, conveniently changed his name to John T. McCANN without bothering to mess with those pesky court papers, and I had been told KRAUSE was Anna's *maiden* name, so the census entries make me more puzzled. Besides, all family that knew enough of her to hand the stories down to me are all dead now, too. Oh, the secrets that we'll never know! Anyhow, if anyone could help me w that 1925 lookup, or has any thoughts on how to navigate this problem (obits? Death cert for Anna or Rose?), I'd appreciate it. Jacqi in CA

H. Walenta, pastor of St. Mark's German Evangelical Reformed Church, located at Grove St. and Onderdonk Avenue, in Ridgewood, Queens. He was pastor from May 1910 into 1957. The original pastor was Henry Frech, 1906-10. Prior to 1919 the church was the Die Deutsche Evangelische Protestantische Volkskirche; in 1919 the name of St. Mark's Ger. Evang. Reformed Church was adopted; the word "German" was dropped in 1930, and in 1962 it became known as St. Mark's United Church of Christ. The church is still active and is located at current #601 Onderdonk Ave., Ridgewood NY 11385. Pastor Walenta resided at 1739 Grove St. (between Cypress Ave. & Covert, now Seneca Ave.) into 1924 when he then moved to 1666 Grove St., between St. Nicholas Ave. & Cypress Ave. The Roman Catholic parish covering this general area is St. Brigid (org. 1882) located at St. Nicholas Ave. & Linden St., on the Brooklyn-Queens border.
