Would anyone have photos of this cemetery, the front entrance, any of the grounds? I have photos of the head stone of family, would like to see what the front looks like. Also, I have another family plot, I would like to one day have photos of the head stones. If someone has photos, perhaps you could scan them. Thanks. Judy in CA

I heard from someone tonight that MHT Cemetery had reclaimed and re used his grandfathers grave as they considered it abandoned. Has anyone every heard of this before? I seem to remember a discussion on one of the NY lists a few years ago and I thought it was said the catholic cemeteries in the NY and Brooklyn Diocese did not do this. If this is the case it concerns me and may concern you if you have family buried there many, many years ago and as in the case of Calvary have not paid the fees for perpetual care. With all the material Most Holy Trinity sent me yesterday along with the list of interments they did not include a bill ...was it paid....or do they not charge those fees? I am a bit concerned.... I think I need to write to both Calvary and Most Holy Trinity to let them know I am a descendant of the original purchasers and want to "stake my claim". At Calvary there are two family graves that have beautiful sandstone tomb stones from the 1860's. I would hate to think of them being torn down and so on. Anyone? Elizabeth V. Sorry Patty, I thought I have made it clear all along that I am looking in both Kings and Queens Counties for a marriage records for my great grandparents, Jacob Frey and Franziska Schmitt. Unfortunately, I cannot use the FHC so I have to hope the Municipal Archives finds a record or one of the churches I have written to, in Queens and in Brooklyn, comes back with a positive answer. If all my responses are negatives, I am going to hire someone to double check the records for me. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
>I do not know if they were married in Brooklyn or in Long Island City. The >groom lived in LIC but I have no idea where the bride lived. Brooklyn is a >possibility as that is where their children were born....actually in >Greenpoint. Elizabeth, There are marriage records for the City of Brooklyn beginning in 1866. I have not seen a Brooklyn certificate for the 1870s era, so I can't vouch for the contents. Manhattan certs as early as 1866 contained names of parents, but Brooklyn had different standards until 1898. (For instance, Brooklyn death certificates didn't include parental names until 1898.) Incidentally, when you ask a question like this it helps if you make it clear at the outset what county/borough you refer to. >Do you know if there is a grooms index for Brooklyn? I can't find a FHC listing for a Brooklyn groom index, but I've viewed indexes at the Municipal Archives that correspond to their Brooklyn marriage records. Patty

I have just searched the 1870 Census and believe I have him living in Brooklyn Ward 14 - Williamsburg with his wife Margaret who is 28 years old and the following children: Richard (13 years); Samuel (12 years); Kate (11 years); Joseph (7 years); and (it looks like) Walter (2 years). Jeremiaha's occupation is listed as "engineer." I'll keep checking.

It also shows that this is his 3rd marriage, Katherine's first. Katherine is only 47 years old! Posted on another list http://www.genealogical.com/onlinebook.asp?afid= The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy Arguably the best book ever written on American genealogy, it is the text of choice in colleges and universities or wherever courses in American genealogy are taught. Of the dozens of textbooks, manuals, and how-to books that have appeared over the past twenty-five years, it is the one book that is consistently praised for setting a standard of excellence.
call the cemetary and inquire if he is "residing" there. Judy in CA
Elizabeth, When you get cert from MA, I believe you will be pleased with the information provided. My ggrandparents were married in 1875, and I then received for the first time ever, discovered the name of my paternal gggrandmother. Judy in CA
Thanks Patty. What I am trying to find is the record of a marriage between Franziska Schmitt and Jacob Frey that took place between 1874 and 1877 when their first child was born. I do not know if they were married in Brooklyn or in Long Island City. The groom lived in LIC but I have no idea where the bride lived. Brooklyn is a possibility as that is where their children were born....actually in Greenpoint. I am searching for this to confirm her parents names. Franziskas death in 1890 was found on a register and no information is given on her parents. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I am beginning to receive negative responses from the Catholic Churches I wrote to but have not heard back from the Municipal Archives. Do you know if there is a grooms index for Brooklyn? Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
If you're asking about Queens County marriages, there were no marriage certificates during the 1870s. There are surviving Long Island City registers, but none for the other Queens towns until the 1880s. The information on the LIC registers varied widely from page to page. - They all include the names of bride and groom, date and name of official. - Some pages include the bride and groom's countries of birth. - Some pages include the names of the parents. There is a groom index that supposedly covers 1881-1897, but I know it also contains LIC entries for the 1870s: FHC film# 1908328 "Index to grooms (Queens) 1881-1897 (arranged by towns of Flushing, Jamaica, College Point, Whitestone, & Long Island City,)" Good luck! Does anyone know when Calvary instituted Perpetual Care? Along with the list they sent me today came a bill (reduced by them) for perpetual care of a grave last "used" in 1915 in the amount of $2,345.00 I want you all to know, I wrote a check immediately <grin> Elizabeth V.
