You may find the following information as fascinating and mind boggling as a I did. In regards to Catholics marrying prior to a revision of Canon Law in 1908, they were NOT required to be married by a priest. Thus those of us searching for marriage records prior to 1908 often find ourselves stumped. We should be looking in all traditions...for example in my own family search the nearest German church to where the couple lived happened to be a Lutheran Church. WOW....you learn something new every day. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

WOMAN IN RESERVOIR --- Body of Mrs. Meltzer Found in Reservoir in Highland Park --- SHE HAD COMMITTED SUICIDE The mystery shrouding the sudden disappearance of Mrs. Jennie Meltzer, 42, from her home at 2292 Pitkin avenue since May 7, was solved when her body was found drowned in the Ridgewood Reservoir, Highland Park, Thursday night. Her identity was positively established by her husband, Morris, who said that she had been suffering intense nervousness for several days prior to her disappearance. The police say that her mental condition led her to suicide. She is survived by her husband and five children." If an obituary had been published in this issue or in the following week, the Society would have clipped it. Extracts and/or abstracts of the May 1916 issues of the RIDGEWOOD TIMES are also on file at the historical society and there apparently was no news item, obituary or death notice published in that newspaper.

I have a 1916 death certificate for Jennie MELTZER, indicating death by drowning at Ridgewood Reservoir, Highland Park, Cypress Hills, Queens, NY. The coroner estimated date of death as May 11, 1916, but apparently the body wasn't actually recovered until May 18 or 19. I am interested in any area newspaper coverage around this time. I have been unable to find anything in the NY Times, and don't have access to any Queens newspapers. Can anyone help out? I only need obituary information. I already have census and other data on this individual and her family. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help or make suggestions for pursuing this. Mary

Hi, I have done some research into my cousins Hungarian Jewish Grandparents and found them buried in Mt. Richmond Cemetery, 420 Clarke Avenue, Staten Island, NY. I do not have the phone number, but I am sure you could find them under yellowpages.com. I also came into contact with the "Hebrew Free Burial Association", located at 224 West 35th Street, Room 300, New York, New York 10001 - The phone number is 212-239-1662. They were the actual ones who found the right cemetery for me. Good luck! Sincerely, Marge Duffy Virgulak

The information about finding births should prove very useful. Do these records go back to 1873, by any chance? We have a Francis-Frank Zillig supposed to be born in NY then, the year after his parents immigrated. We don't know if they were in the city or if they maybe went to Putman Co. before heading West. In any event, thanks to your wonderful information, I am going to try Cornell first. I have contacted them probably twice a year for several years but never had dates to give them to search for Dr. Byron. Here's hoping he kept in touch and now they can find information about him.

BYRON's office was at 345 Schermerhorn St. in Brooklyn, NY, according to the 1958 American Medical Directory, p. 973. He graduated in 1923 from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. The birthdate you have for him would be just after Queens county joined New York City, which I believe was Jan. 1, 1898. The doctor's birthdate may be printed in one of the annual birth indexes published in book form. One collection is at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue and West 42nd Street in Manhattan. Find the American History Division on the first floor. Request the birth index for New York City for five years---in case it was a delayed registration. It is cataloged as : New York (City). Health, Dept. of. Births Reported in [year], City of New York. At one time the library's class mark was 8-APRN (N.Y.C.) The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has it on microfilm and you could rent it at one of their branch libraries. The catalog entry is online at : http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=209636&disp=Births+reported+in+the+city+of+New+York++ Or you could skip the index and try to order the birth certificate directly. Does the 1958 medical directory say where in Brooklyn his office was? I am not sure if the SSDI listing in MI is the proper person, but I am very sure that Dr. Charles Stanford Byron was the son of Max Byron. Both Charles and Max registered for the WW1 draft listing the same address -1465 Dekalb Ave, Brooklyn, NY - and Charles named Max, his father, as closest relative. I have the children of Charles Byron and Lillian Schlesinger from the 1930 Census, Queens, Dist 616 858 Forest Ave. In addition, his office is listed in the 1935-1936 MEDICAL DIRECTORY OF NEW YORK QUEENS PHYSICIANS LIST BYRON, Charles S., 858 Forest av., Ridgewood The WW1 draft registration for Charles states he was born 15 Sept. 1898. The 1900 Census for Max Byron says son Charles was born June 1899. So birthday in doubt. This is why I came to the Queens list for help. The family did live in Queens. Did doctors of that time have Social Security? I thot maybe they did not and that was why I wasn't finding him on SSDI. However, Max Byron is listed on SSDI as born 3 July 1873 (WW1draft registration says born July 4), d. May 1972, last residence Flushing, Queens, NY. Seemed like I might have a chance of finding an obit, or family, for a Russian immigrant owning a painting and decorating center for many years, who lived almost to 100. How remarkable!

The last residence known to the Social Security Administration was in Richmond Hill, a section of the borough of Queens. When applying for a Social Security card, one fills out an SS-5 form listing birthplace and names of parents. After death, the SSA sells copies of the SS-5 to the public for $27.00. To apply, find Abe's entry, then click on "SS-5 Letter" on the right side. A form letter will be displayed on your screen, which you can print out and mail with the fee to the SSA. Then wait several months. Reg Niles

The New York State section of the directory shows him in Brooklyn and says he was born in 1898, which confirms the year you posted. The Social Security Death Index has an entry for a Charles BYRON, born Aug. 2, 1898, died Mar. 1970, last known residence = Saginaw, MI. If you believe this to be the person of interest, use those facts to seek his obituary, which should list living relatives. Or seek a will in a county courthouse. To confirm the decedent on the SSDI is the son of Max costs $27.00. To do so, find his entry, then click on "SS-5 Letter." To post a free annotation (such as a plea for contact with relatives), click on "Add Post-em." Biographical information on physicians is also sold by the American Medical Association. The federal census of 1930, indexed by Ancestry.com, should list the children. Reg Niles
