Depending upon the year, death certificates are indexed by name, And age and so you don't have to scour death records for an entire Year. You just check the death indexes for Queens. If the death Is much earlier and there are only death registers or libers (one Line in a book), the they are listed by the first letter of the surname By year , month and date and it takes no time to look through the first Letter of the last name for a certain year. Hope this is helpful to people as finding records at the Munciipal Archives is not difficult. Even if you don't have the year you can Look through death indexes by years for each boro and go through Many years in a short period of time. If the name you are searching Is common, then you would have to read each certificate to see if you Can figure out if you have the right person. The certificates are all On microfilm and you can copy down the information or pay for a raised Seal copy which you take with you that very day. I have part of a will for my G. uncle Patrick O'Reilly stating that he was to be buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, NYC. The will was probated in 1904 so I assume he died in 1903-1904. His neice Mary Quinn made the arrangements and my grandfather Bernard Reilly was one beneficiary. Since I don't have the exact death date or burial date the cemetery can't help me. Thanks for any help.

Surnames: COLES, PEEBLES Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WUB.2ACI/1440 Message Board Post: Died at his residence in Ashland, Ky., March 8th, Capt. Samuel Coles, in the 63d year of his age. Capt. Coles, the son of Benjamin and Hannah Coles, was born in Long Island, N. J., June, 1808. He moved to Indiana in his childhood and remained there, and in the Miami Valley, until 1830. At this time, he came to Portsmouth, Ohio, where, in 1836, he was married to Miss N. E. Peebles, daughter of Robt. and Jane Peebles. He moved from Portsmouth to Hanging Rock in the Spring of 1854. Becoming identified with the company that secured the Eastern Division of the Lexington & Big Sandy R. R., that began opening the coal mines of this region, he was chosen President, and, in December of 1864, moved to Ashland, Ky., to superintend the interest of that company. Here, he entirely gave himself to the work, and faithfully performed the duties of his office, until, in the Providence of God, he was suddenly stricken down by paralysis in July, 1869. It was fondly hoped by all that he might recover, but he gradually failed, until, after much suffering and trial he found rest in Jesus. He leaves a wife and ten children and a large circle of friends to mourn their irreparable loss. It is very sad, indeed, to record the death of this beloved and faithful servant of the Lord Jesus; for, though we morn not as those without hope, - though we trust that our loss is his everlasting gain; - yet his death is felt to be a sure bereavement. During his residence at Hanging Rock, he connected himself with the Presbyterian church, and by his after life made good that profession. He said less than many do in regard to his religious experience, yet the uniform interest he manifested in religious things, and in the welfare of God's church, afforded more decided evidence of love to Christ and His cause than any mere profession could have done. His place was seldom vacant in the sanctuary on the Sabbath. He always rejoiced in the prosperity of Zion. All the efforts at moral reform received his best wishes and cordial assistance, and in him they have lost an earnest supporter. He willingly gave his hand to all that he thought was good and for God's glory. Those who were best acquainted with him, knew him to be humble and cheerful in his feelings - kind and benevolent in his disposition - warm and faithful in his friendships. In his domestic relations he was tender and affectionate. In his convictions of christian truth and duty he was firm and unwavering. Salvation by Grace was his strong tower as a christian man. These convictions were support and comfort in the prospect of death. When he saw his days were numbered he had no fear, but, with humble submission to the will of his Heavenly Gather, waited his appointed hour. His end was peace. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. C---. Ironton Journal, Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio, March 15, 1871

Of course the "365 days" information this person gave you was erroneous, but you are still unlikely to find someone who will volunteer to search 31 days of newspapers for an obituary that may or may not exist. If you know this person died in Queens, you can request a death certificate from the NYC Dept of Health. This will give you the date, residence, place of burial, etc. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vr/vr.shtml Once you know the date of death and community in which the person lived, send $8 to Queens Library for an obit search. They will know what newspaper is most likely to have an obituary for someone who lived in that community. The Queens Borough Public Library, Long Island Division 89-11 Merrick Boulevard, 2nd Floor, Jamaica, NY 11432 Good luck. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WUB.2ACI/1439 Message Board Post: I'm pleased to announce that we have added Queens 1925 to the databases at: http://www.stevemorse.org/nyc/nyc.php What that means is that it is possible to find an AD/ED for a Queens address so that you can then look it up on the 1925 NY State Census films available from the FHL and other places. This was a VERY difficult transcription project to complete. I never felt I was in a "groove", mainly because I had 4 windows open on the computer, and a drawn map on my lap...to do the transcription. To do this project, I had a 1925 map of Queens which showed mainly the old street names and on which I had drawn the 1925 Election District and Assembly District (AD/ED) boundaries. The EDs were drawn from a 1925 FHL fiche of maps that I had also scanned. I also had a 1949 map of Queens that showed some old names after the new names, and I also had our street name change tables we had previously done. When I transcribed streets from within an ED, I included all the modern street names, and as many of the older names as I could see on the FHL map, the 1925 map, or the street table. Many of the FHL old names were illegible, and I sometimes put in a possible older name into an ED that was in the "vicinity". The greatest accuracy of finding an ED would be to use the new names, but I hope enough of the old names are there to make searching on them feasible. Old names appear on the dropdown list of the utility with a ** after their names. Eventually we will give more directions on the website for searching Queens for AD/EDs. You need to know the address and the cross streets to find your AD/ED number. Since both names and numbers changed during Queens 1910s/1920s massive street change program...it's going to be a challenge, but we have tools to help you on the One Step site. In addition, I will look at an FHL fiche that shows AD/EDs for communities of Queens in 1925 and see if I can get that table online. I'm also in the process of revising the 1915 Queens database we have online and that should be changed in the next few days. Enjoy
