Huxter (Huckster): One who sells wares or provisions in the street; a peddler or hawker. (I think it is important to note that this usually referred to "street" selling as opposed to having a shop or store) Several of my Meyer1860-1880 family members were also hucksters, but the listing for one was "wood huckster" and his daughter was a "rag huckster", which upon researching, indicated that they went around and "scrounged" up discarded wood or rags and then resold them. Free enterprise or "early flea marker". Virginia
I have a relative who in the 1880 census is listed as occupation HUXTER. Can anyone verify what that is?? Is it a trader? Seller?? _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Make it easier for your friends to see what you’re up to on Facebook. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/social-network-basics.aspx?ocid=PID23461::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-xm:SI_SB_2:092009

Thank you listers for assistance in my quest for the family of John J. Colino. A lister sent me his obituary and his son has been located. Now, finally, the Autograph Book of John Colino,, dated 1934 (HS PS 132) can be given to family members. It was a 2 month research journey with many twists and turns. Deanna
I'm half German and have researched that side for many years. The spelling of the name MUNCRON didn't sound German to me. I did a search for it in the German phone directory. I got no hits. I think the R is really a K from some old hand writing records I have. If you search MUNCK* in the German dir and ancestry you get plenty of hits. However nothing beyond the stem with next letter O. At ancestry all those German born are simply MUNCK. I have seen in German marriage records -OW added to the end of the woman name I think it means maiden name. I think the last letter may be a W. This may have been a woman who was married, but wanted the recipient to recognize the name on the envelope. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on MUNCRON, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find an S MUNCRON in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with Queens can find him/her or correctly decipher the spelling of the name. I believe that Geestacht may be his/her or his/her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website. Church records will be your most likely resource. Unfortunately, the 1870 census failed to identify smaller subdivision within the rather large town of Oyster Bay, but you can find a good series of 1873 maps at this location. http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Map/Maps.Main.html Another suggestion: while Oyster Bay was part of Queens County in 1870, it's now in Nassau County.
