Hi Everyone. I was wondering if there were any free newspaper sources online with archives that I can research surnames. I already checked the Brooklyn Eagle and fultonhistory.com and I have found alot of information (especially my Dayton line). I don't have anything specific I am looking for, I just want to do a surname search to see if I find anything on my family. My families have moved quite alot between the Bronx, NYC, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties (I even found a document from Staten Island). I am looking mainly between 1860-1970s. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. His father was the Reverend Robert Nutt Gilder. Would he possibly be listed in the 1860 census for that area? ANY help is extremely(!!!) appreciated. I had tried contacting the funeral home twice, to no avail. Third time was the charm. Last month I decided to snail mail them rather than email them and even enclosed a SASE - and it worked (how does a place stay in business if it posts an email address on its website and then doesn't respond to emails? sigh). Yesterday, I got a handwritten note with the exact gravesite in Calvary. Success! I guess persistence - and the US Postal Service - is key. Had I not received that note, I would now be contacting the three cemeteries you mention. Thank you - and thanks to everyone - who offered advice. In the early 1900's, European immigrants flooded to the region. At that time the city's municipal government had not yet organized a social welfare program. Therefore, the Board of Health and Department of Hospitals could handle only a fraction of tuberculosis patents. As soon as the nuns opened St. Anthony's, the hospital was filled with 400 patients, including 50 children. The hospital's first medical director was also one of the first physicians in New York City to use better alternatives to tuberculosis. Toward the end of World War 1, United States Army facilities requested St. Anthony's hospital to accommodate them with this treatment. St. Anthony's continued to improve the care of tuberculosis patients and extended use of the facility to patients suffering from chest diseases. It was shut down over 50 years ago. Just because the death certificate states Calvary does not mean the person was buried there. I have run into this problem a few times. The way that I have located some of the people was to call other cemeteries or contact the funeral home (which you have already tried). Which funeral home was it? Have you tried St. John's cemetery in Middle Village? Call St. Michael's again and don't mention what the certificate says. I would also try All Faiths (718) 821-1750. Very little is known about them, save that they probably didn't settle in the Point. It is possible that they originally received a land grant here, which was recorded on a map or deed, but which they did not take up. In any case, for a number of years College Point was known as Tew's Neck, it's firt official name." As far as is known, there has never been confirmation of a "White Stone" in the area east of College Point called Whitestone, though from time to time I have seen newspaper references to it. Sometimes cemetery caretakers will know where someone is buried. If you have a date, they may have a handwritten record/book with the burial lot and info in it. ________________________________ From: CD Family <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, December 31, 2009 4:48:40 AM Subject: Re: [NYQUEENS] Help me find the date my grandfather died Some Cemeteries have online databases. I agree with Bob. Call the cemetery. I have had great success with many of the cemeteries. The bigger cemeteries have their information computerized and it takes them a few minutes to do a look up. The other day, I decided to find my uncle who died in 1977. I knew he lived out in Long Island...either Nassau or Suffolk County. He was not military like his father and brother, who are buried in the L.I. National Cemetery. I know that out that way Pinelawn is a huge cemetery, so I took a shot in the dark and called Pinelawn. The woman on the phone gave me the exact location of my uncle's grave, the name of the funeral home and whatever info they had. With that, I contacted the funeral home and this opened another door for me. The funeral director gave me all the info he had. BUT, not all funeral homes will do this. I've had some that welcome those of us that do genealogy and others who will not give out info unless you are a direct descendant, which in this case (grandfather), you are.
