    1. [NYQUEENS] Queens Surrogate Court Records
    2. Am wondering how active this list is--more than message board gateways? I am looking for Administrations in the Surrogate's Office, NY, that were in something called File Box of Original Papers on Queens County (1787-1829). Are these at the Surrogate Court in Queens? In the NYC Municipal Archives? On film with LDS? I would like a copy of a letter supposedly in some estate papers from 1798. Thank you. Elizabet

I had checked the Italian Genealogy Group but hadn't found Dorothy or Matthew Cornetta. I have to be sure she is the one married to my Great Uncle. I can order the death certificate but don't want to pay $15 if not pretty sure this is correct relative. They did live in Flushing. I know they buried at Mt. St Mary because another cousin had gone by there several years ago. This cousin doesn't drive anymore and is 89 so can't go check any more. I am also trying to find out when they got married. I have checked Ancestry and can only find them listed in 1930 census. dng. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am investigating a Queens family of Wilkinses who may have been on Long Island in the 17th century but who then expanded into Manhattan by the mid-18th. Jacob Wilkins, b ca. 1735, merchant of New York, had a brass foundry and sold his merchandise in southern Manhattan. By his first wife, Hannah Betts, he had sons John, Jacob, William, and Augustus and daughters Ann(e) and Hannah. By his second wife, Ann Rapalje, he had children, Helen and States. My newest information is that his son William, b ca. 1767, married Ann(e) Thorn(e) of Flushing in 1788 and lived there until his death ca. 1798. I have information from the same book named in this thread, COLONIAL FAMILIES, which appears to be a compilation of research donated by 20th c. researchers (who perhaps subscribed to the publication of the book). The Wilkins entry lists sources for the information, but I have not been able to check them all yet. The Jacob Wilkins connection is proved by the William Wilkins Administration of Estate records, File Box of 1787-1829, Queens Co. Surrogate's Office. Any response to this is welcome. William Wilkins apparently had children named Jacob Thorn, Cornelia (m Brooks), Ann (m Ousterman), and Hannah. These can be followed through the census and other 19th records. There are very few Wilkins in New York, Kings, and Queens Cos., before 1840. Since you have since identified Lucinda Wilkins as the daughter of Thomas Wilkins of this area and Thomas as the son of a Peter Wilkins, I am hoping we may find some connection in the 17th or 18th century. 1. Re: [NYQUEENS] [NAS] Cemetery plots
    2. David Smith
    3. Hi Liz The short answer is yes. By NYS law any blood relative can claim ownership of a family plot. You need to speak to the cemetery or, I believe, the Department of Health to find out what the procedure is. Depending on how long ago the last burial was the cemetery may be less helpful though. I've been told that cemeterys are allowed to reclaim abandoned plots 100 years after the last burial. Dave Smith

    2. David Roberts
    3. Liz: I might be TOTALLY wrong, but I think the plot belongs to the heirs of the person listed in the record as the plot owner. The one your great-aunt owned should be the property of your great-aunt's direct heirs. But "possession of the cemetery deed" is also important. My great-grandmother's brother-in-law bought a plot at Genola Rural Cemetery in East Northport in 1896, when his mother-in-law, my great-great-grandmother, died. She was the first one buried in the plot. {1896}. The owner of the plot died next - around 1902 - my great-grandmother & her sister, widow of the original owner, both died in 1935 & both were buried in the plot. Eventually, the deed came to my great-aunt. Her son gave it to my mother; we used it in 1992 when my mother died. I have it here in Maryland. The originally 1896 purchaser died w/out an children. In 114 years since 1896, the deed itself served to allow numerous burials for members of our family line - my mother in 1992 being the last person buried in the plot. There is still some room in the plot, I believe. My grandfather's plot is in the L.I. National Cemetery and it was meant for two burials...my grandfather and my grandmother. They were divorced and most likely, if she is even alive (I have yet to find her), she would not be buried with him. This past summer, I went out to St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx, where one of my greatgrandmother's is buried. At the cemetery, I was told that the gravesite is three deep, but only my ggrandmother is buried there. The plot is listed as being owned by her daughter, my gr-aunt, who is also deceased. So there are two graves that belong to the family. My other ggrandparents are in East Hillside Cemetery near Glen Cove. The caretaker told me that there was one more site that belonged to the family. I don't know who in the family owns that one. My q! > uestion is, if the owner of the plot is deceased, can a family member claim the remaining gravesites? > > Again, I am just curious and wondering if anyone else has dealt with this type of situation. I am not looking to gain possession for my own burial (I don't live in NY anymore), but what if there were family members that could not afford a plot...and this space, bought by ancestors, exists. I, personally would at least like to be listed as a next of kin in case any other family members are out there looking for my family. Just wondering...any thoughts? > Liz
