Several other states have done this and the index gives no more information than the SSDI already does. We've been paying 22 dollars per record for quite some time now and I think they've made enough to attempt a project like the digitization of the index. As always we can have more of an impact on our representatives with larger numbers so I would truly love it if my fellow NYS Genealogists wrote in to their representatives as well. If anyone wants to discuss it further feel free to message me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He came with wife Sarah and produced a certificate from Flushing on 18 April 1718. There may be other relatives who attended this Mtg in Flushing. Originally, the family had come from Hartshaw Mtg in England so they may have been at Flushing for only a short time. If anyone has access to the Quaker records at Flushing, any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sorry, I have not been on the internet much lately and also, I live in Florida not NY. Wish you the best. I have not been to our public library in quite a while, it's downtown and all the touristy things are on going. :) I know! Excuses, excuses! >Hi ? Have you traced back into the 17th century. I have some information but not a complete picture. I?believe the Wilkins came out of Gravesend in the 1640's, ?the Thornes from Flushing in the 1640's and the Oustermans were in Manhattan from the 1650's to about 1800. Can you add any thing more to these families. Harry Bell?? [email protected]< Hello, Harry. You have my email address slightly wrong so it did not go through to me, but I fortunately spotted you on the listserve. I am aware that there were Wilkinses in Gravesend in the 17th century and that the name was rare in the NYC area until the 19th century. However, I have been unable to connect them as yet to my Jacob Wilkins, b ca. 1735 somewhere in NY state, merchant of New York [city], d 1809. If you will go to my entries in rootsweb.com worldconnect, you can see Jacob. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=winspeare&id=I2472 Hit Register above his name, and you will see a nice little line of descent. Right now I am working on his son William Wilkins who married Ann Thorne. I have several generations down from there but have not uploaded yet this month, so only his children show. Coincidentally, I am about to go to my Family History Center this morning as four reels of Queens probate records have come in, and I hope to find out more about William's family. The source I have listed from him is a secondary one, a book published in 1931, so I am trying to identify the records used to write his entry. So far I have done no Thorne or Ousterman research. After you look at my database entries, let me know if you have anything to add or correct. Thanks, Elizabeth

In case you are not familiar with the term! During WW II the Navy assigned some men to ride civilian Cargo ships and man a 5 inch Naval Gun usually mounted on a platform at the stern of the ship. If attacked by a surfaced submarine they could defend themselves. There was usually only enough men to handle the gun, ammunition and several work shifts or Watches as a work shift was called. These men were brave as earlier in the war many, many, ships were fired on and sunk. I believe there is an Armed Guard Association, whom may have some records. Don S USN Ret.

Other than his death record the only thing on ancestry is the fact that he was in the US Navy and was coming back from Europe in 1945. He is listed as an Armed Guard.
