    3. Hi Nancy, thank you for the reply. I am looking for James Smith... the needle in the haystack... James was born about 1760. He was a Loyalist at age 16, joining Cathcart's (New York Loyalist) Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of Cowpens in early 1781 and a prisioner until 1783. He married Catherine Southard shortly afterward in Albany ( I don't know if, at the time Albany was a city or a county) and by 1806 he was in New Berlin, Chenango County. I don't know if he had sons, but I think he had at least two daughters, Mary Jane and Hannah. Mary Jane married in 1806, in New Berlin, Jeremiah Dyer. Hannah married a few years later Frederick Vail. I know for certain that both the Vails and the Southards were in Dutchess County (Fishkill area) before Vail arrived in New Berlin. Jeremiah and Mary Jane (Smith) Dyer lived in Jefferson County, NY 1812-1814 and then in Lewiston, Niagara County, NY finally settling in Lockport, Niagara County. That's about it. Not much to go on.
