Similar story - Our family is also supposed to be Indian, also unproven. My aunt told me she had a picture of our Indian g-g-g grandfather with braids and a feather in his hair or hat, but I never saw it and she has since passed away.? I am a descendant of Samuel Head 1800-1881 of Carmel and Zephaniah Dingee?(1787-1865) and Elizabeth Ballard Dingee of Carmel.? I was told we were "Mohawk" growing up but it is more likely Mohican/Mahican - Wappinger Indians.? I have researched for 20 years and haven't been able to "prove" any further lineage or link to Native Americans. She showed me a picture of the man in a dark suit, tall hat, and braids. My sister and I were young and we can't remember his name or how we're related and have had no luck in tracing this heritage. The last two town historians also said we had Indian blood, but couldn't verify the lineage. If you look at an antique map of the Kent NY from 1868 (you can find and view this on the Internet), you will see in the upper region all of your family's homesteads.
